There is no universally best version of a game. Start with the hardware you already own and how you want to play, then check the exact game’s edition, PC requirements, multiplayer compatibility, save and account rules, and local price. Features differ by title—even between games from the same publisher—so verify the game’s current support page before buying.
Start with your hardware and how you want to play
For most buyers, the simplest starting point is the PC or console they already have. A different version is worth considering when it solves a specific need, such as playing with friends on another platform, carrying progress between devices, or playing in portable mode on a Switch.
- Already own a suitable device: Check that version first; buying new hardware for one game adds a cost beyond the game itself.
- Portability matters: Consider whether playing away from a TV or desk is important enough to outweigh any other differences between versions.
- Playing with friends matters: Confirm cross-play support and matchmaking rules before choosing a platform.
- Moving between devices matters: Check save transfer, progression, account content, and purchase entitlements separately.
Compare the same edition and purchase format
Compare like with like: Standard Edition against Standard Edition, or Deluxe against Deluxe, in the same region and purchase format. A higher-priced edition may include extra content, while an upgrade or a second copy may be needed to access another platform or generation. Check the platform store listing and the publisher’s game-specific details for what is included.

Cross-generation entitlement means one purchase includes versions for more than one generation within a platform family. It is not the same as cross-buy between PlayStation and Xbox, or between a console and PC. For example, 2K says the digital Standard Edition of NBA 2K26 includes PS4 and PS5 versions, or Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S versions. It does not offer that entitlement for Switch or PC. For a physical Standard Edition, 2K says the package includes a redemption code for the accompanying digital copy. These are rules for that game and edition, not a general promise about other releases. 2K’s NBA 2K26 cross-play and cross-generation FAQ has the details.

If you are choosing PC, check the exact game’s requirements
“PC” does not describe one fixed level of performance. Results depend on the computer’s hardware, the game version, and its graphics settings. Compare the game’s official minimum and recommended requirements with your PC’s components before purchasing; if you are considering new hardware, check requirements for the specific game first.
If performance is decisive, look for credible tests of the same game version across the platforms you are considering. A useful comparison should identify resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, and performance stability. Without comparable testing, do not assume PC will look or run better simply because it is PC. EA’s Apex Legends FAQ, for instance, directs players to separate PC system requirements.

Verify that you can play with your friends
Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together, but it is game-specific. Check the game’s current support information for the platforms and generations that can connect, how matchmaking groups players, and whether party composition changes the matchmaking pool.

Check saves, progression, purchases, and accounts separately
Cross-play only answers whether players can play together. It does not establish that a save, character, progress, add-on, or virtual-currency balance transfers to another platform. Look up each feature you care about, including whether transfer works in every game mode or only some modes.
For example, EA says FC progression carries between generations within the same platform family, not from PlayStation to Xbox; PlayStation cross-progression is limited to Ultimate Team. 2K says NBA 2K26 supports cross-platform multiplayer but not cross-platform progression. In Apex Legends, EA says Apex Coins acquired on Switch stay on Switch, while balances acquired on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox are shared across those platforms. These examples demonstrate why a game’s own rules matter; they do not describe every game.

Compare the final local price
Once you have identified versions that meet your needs, compare the same edition, region, and format at the time you plan to buy. Include any upgrade, add-on, or subscription cost that affects how you intend to play. Prices and regional listings vary, and without a specific game and market there is no meaningful platform-wide price comparison.
