Choose a console by starting with the games you want, then weigh where you will play, what your friends use, and the full cost of owning it. Nintendo Switch 2 stands apart for handheld, tabletop, and TV play; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are home-console families with different models and configurations. There is no universally best choice—the best fit is the one that supports your games and setup without stretching your budget.

Start with the games you actually want to play

Write down the specific games or series you expect to play, rather than choosing a brand first. Check each title’s current availability on the console you are considering. If you already own a library, check which of those games carry over: Nintendo says Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal and some titles may not work or may not be fully compatible. Use Nintendo’s compatibility information to check individual games.

Your friends’ platform can also matter if you expect to play together. Confirm that the exact game supports the online play you want across the platforms involved; do not assume every game offers the same multiplayer options.

Decide whether portable play is important

Nintendo Switch 2: handheld, tabletop, or TV

Switch 2 can be used in handheld, tabletop, and TV modes. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD, 256 GB of internal storage, Wi-Fi 6, and HDR10 support. In TV mode, output can reach 3840×2160 at 60 fps when the game and display support it. Nintendo’s estimated battery life is approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the game. These are Nintendo’s specifications, accessed October 7, 2026; actual features and battery life depend on use and supported content. See the Switch 2 technical specifications.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Choose this form factor if you want to continue playing away from a TV or share a screen in tabletop mode. If you are buying it mainly for a particular game, verify that game is available for Switch 2 and, if relevant, that your existing Switch copy is compatible.

PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S: compare home setups

For PlayStation, compare the standard PS5 with PS5 Pro rather than treating them as interchangeable. Sony positions PS5 Pro for improved visuals in supported games, so its benefits depend on the titles you play and whether your display can show the difference. Check the current regional listing and the configuration you intend to buy, including whether it has a disc drive. Sony’s US site listed PS5 Pro starting at $899 when accessed October 7, 2026; that is a volatile US starting-price listing, not a universal price. Sony announced recommended price changes effective April 2, 2026, so older launch prices may no longer apply. See the PlayStation US site and its March 27, 2026 price-change announcement.

Xbox Series X|S also includes distinct console options. Compare the exact model’s storage and whether its configuration meets your disc-media needs; do not assume every Series X|S option has identical specifications. Xbox says compatible storage expansion cards connect through a dedicated port and replicate the console’s custom SSD experience. Check the precise model and current expansion-card listings before budgeting. See Xbox’s Series X|S console options and the Xbox Series X product page.

Budget for the whole setup

A console’s purchase price is only one part of its cost. Add the games you plan to buy, any membership needed for the online features you use, storage expansion if the built-in capacity will not be enough, and accessories required for your setup. Nintendo notes that a Nintendo Switch Online membership is sold separately for applicable online features. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass are also ongoing-cost categories to check, but plan prices and included benefits can vary by region and change over time.

Prices are regional and can change. Compare current listings in your country for the exact model and configuration; do not rely on a price from another region or an older launch price. The Nintendo family page lists US suggested prices for Switch-family systems, which are not guaranteed retailer prices. Check Nintendo’s current family page alongside the live PlayStation and Xbox listings before deciding.

Use this decision path

  1. List your must-play games. Verify each game’s availability on the exact model under consideration.
  2. Check your existing library. Confirm compatibility for games you already own; Nintendo Switch-to-Switch 2 compatibility has exceptions.
  3. Choose your play setting. If handheld and tabletop use are essential, investigate Switch 2. Otherwise, compare the home-console models that fit your games and setup.
  4. Check social and media needs. Find out which platform your friends use and whether you need a disc drive for your intended use.
  5. Price the complete setup. Include console, games, online membership, storage, and necessary accessories using current local prices.
  6. Only then compare higher-tier options. For PS5 Pro, weigh supported-game benefits and your display against its current price; for Xbox, compare the exact Series X|S model and storage plan.
