Choose among Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Makita by comparing the exact tools you need, the battery platform those models use, and the full cost of building that platform—not by brand reputation or voltage labels alone. Start with your likely tool list, then check model-level performance, fit, kit contents, compatibility, warranty, and local availability.
Start with the tools you expect to use
A cordless drill kit is often the first purchase in a battery ecosystem. The decision can affect later purchases because future tools may share its batteries and charger—but only when they use the same platform. List the tools you expect to need in the near term, including any specialty trade or outdoor tools that are genuinely relevant. Then check whether each candidate platform offers the specific models that suit those jobs.
Do not assume every tool from one brand uses the same battery family. Milwaukee lists M12, M18, and MX FUEL systems and says batteries are compatible within their respective systems. Makita says batteries work within their respective platform; its corporate report depicts CXT, LXT, and XGT families. DEWALT identifies a 20V MAX cordless system. Confirm the exact tool, battery, and charger documentation before treating them as compatible. See Milwaukee’s battery compatibility information, Makita’s U.S. warranty and product information, Makita Report 2025, and DEWALT’s 20V MAX system page.

Milwaukee’s M12, M18, and MX FUEL labels identify distinct battery families. Makita’s CXT, LXT, and XGT are also separate families; the company’s 2025 report depicts CXT 10.8V, LXT 18V, and XGT 40Vmax lines. DEWALT’s page describes its 20V MAX system. These labels help identify a platform, but they do not establish how well a particular tool will perform on your task.
#1 Best Overall
- Drill/Driver features a 3/8" chuck, 0-650 rpm ideal for consumer DIY projects, 11 position clutch to prevent stripping of screws and damaging work material and an LED work light for increased visibility in tight or dark spaces
- The circular saw's compact design makes it easy to use and reduces fatigue. The 5.5" blade is capable of cutting 2x lumber, and its high torque motor makes it ideal for consumer DIY projects. Adjustments are quick and easy with the tool-free depth of cut and bevel settings for angled cutting.
- Work light features up to 11 hours of runtime
- 2 batteries double the runtime for less down time on larger projects
- Part of the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Lithium Ion Battery System
A secondary comparison published by Pro Tools Guide on August 18, 2026, describes DEWALT’s 20V MAX label as peak voltage and compares it with Milwaukee M18 and Makita LXT. That is not a controlled comparison of usable power. Compare specifications and, where available, independent tests for the exact models instead of inferring performance from the number printed in a platform name. The comparison is at Pro Tools Guide.
Do not treat a cross-brand adapter as manufacturer-approved compatibility. Follow the tool maker’s compatibility instructions rather than relying on an adapter to bridge battery systems.
Compare equivalent tools for the job
Once you know which platforms have the tools you need, compare models within the same category and for the same task. A compact driver intended for overhead work and a high-output saw intended for repeated framing cuts are not meaningful stand-ins for one another. Compare:

- CMCD700: powerful motor: provides 280 uwo of power and 2 speed gearbox ranging from 0-350 RPM and 0-1,500 RPM for demanding tasks
- CMCF800: maximum torque: provides 1,460 in-lbs. Of torque 2,800 RPM and 3,100 bpm for heavy duty fastening
- CMCS300: speed: 1-in stroke length running at 3,000 SPM for speed of completing applications.
- CMCL020B: improved visibility: 140 lumens for improved visibility
- Task performance: Use specifications or independent testing relevant to the work, such as the material, workload, and duty cycle.
- Size and handling: Check weight, length, grip, and access to tight spaces; a smaller or lighter tool may matter more than headline output for overhead or confined work.
- Battery and charging: Compare battery capacity, charger speed, and whether the kit includes the batteries and charger you need.
- Accessories and kit contents: Confirm exactly which batteries, case, bits, blades, or other accessories are included.
- Availability: Check that the specific models and required specialty tools are sold where you live.
Pro Tools Guide characterizes DEWALT as broad-retail and value-oriented, Milwaukee as strong in trade-specific tools and performance, and Makita as focused on controlled power and lightweight tools. These are that publication’s editorial profiles, not universal findings or controlled test results. Use them only as prompts to investigate the models that fit your work.
Calculate the cost of entering and extending a platform
Compare the starter kit price with the bare-tool price and account for batteries and a charger if they are not included. Then consider the likely cost of the next few tools on your list. A low entry price may not represent the best overall fit if the platform lacks a needed specialty tool or requires a second battery family for it.
Some brands offer tools across multiple battery platforms. If a desired tool is available only in a different family from the one you are considering, decide deliberately whether that second platform—and its batteries and charger—is worthwhile. Do not assume a future tool will use the battery you already own just because it carries the same brand.

Prices, stock, and kit contents change. A DEWALT DCK240C2 drill and impact driver combo kit is one example to investigate if you choose the DEWALT 20V MAX platform; verify its current listing, contents, price, and seller before buying. It is an example, not evidence that DEWALT is a better choice than Milwaukee or Makita.

Check warranty and service for the exact product
Warranty coverage depends on the product, country, and terms. Makita U.S.A. states a three-year limited warranty from original purchase for covered Lithium-Ion tools, batteries, and chargers, subject to terms and exclusions. That statement applies to the U.S. coverage described on Makita’s warranty page, not automatically to every Makita product or region.
DEWALT provides product-specific warranty information and exclusions on its warranty page. Milwaukee directs customers to the relevant manual or warranty information for battery terms; start with its battery page and check the documents for the exact product. Before purchase, confirm the coverage and service route in your country, keep proof of purchase, and check whether the seller’s authorization status is clear.
Use a practical shortlist before buying
- Write down your likely tools. Include the jobs and specialty equipment you actually expect to use, not every tool a brand sells.
- Identify each model’s battery family. Verify tool, battery, and charger compatibility in the manufacturer’s documentation, including any equipment you already own.
- Compare comparable models. For each job, compare performance, dimensions, weight, battery capacity, charger, and included accessories.
- Work out the total cost. Include the starter kit, bare tools you may add, and any extra batteries or charger required. Check live prices and local stock.
- Verify warranty and service. Read the terms for the specific model and country, and make sure you understand how service is handled.
- Decide whether a second platform is acceptable. If a planned tool requires another battery family, weigh the tool’s value against the added batteries and charger.
The best fit is the platform whose specific tools match your work and whose battery family makes sense for the purchases you are likely to make. Brand profiles can help start a shortlist; model-level comparisons should decide it.
