Choose by the kind of world and decision-making you want: historical grand-strategy games begin with real periods, places, and societies but let events diverge, while fantasy strategy builds invented peoples, magic, and realms into the core experience. Then decide whether you want to guide a dynasty, manage a nation, or expand an empire and fight tactical battles. Crusader Kings III, Europa Universalis V, and Age of Wonders 4 suit different preferences; they are not interchangeable versions of one formula.

Start with the kind of world you want to inhabit

A historical setting offers familiar geography, societies, and starting conditions. That familiarity gives players a way to interpret events, but it does not lock a campaign to the real outcome: Paradox describes Europa Universalis V as a deeply researched historical world in which players guide societies along chosen paths.

Fantasy starts from an invented world instead. Its peoples, magic, and political landscape are part of the game’s design rather than references to a real historical era. In Age of Wonders 4, for example, players can shape a faction by combining physical forms, social traits, and arcane powers, then explore varied or custom realms.

  • Choose historical if you enjoy recognizing places and societies and testing alternate outcomes.
  • Choose fantasy if you would rather discover a fictional world or create the people and powers within it.

Decide what you want to manage

“Historical” and “fantasy” describe a setting, not a single style of play. Some games make rulers and relationships central; others put more emphasis on nations, economies, or empire-building.

Which historical grand-strategy game fits you?

Choose Crusader Kings III for character-led play

Crusader Kings III asks you to lead a house and build a dynasty that continues through playable heirs. Its official description highlights starts in 867 and 1066, along with character traits, relationships, court intrigue, faith, governance, and armies. Choose it if the people within a realm interest you as much as the realm itself: marriages, rivalries, succession, and a ruler’s decisions are central to its appeal.

Choose Europa Universalis V for nation-led play

Europa Universalis V focuses on societies across almost five hundred years of history. Paradox describes hundreds of nations and societies, with diplomacy, a sophisticated economy, revised military systems, logistics, resources, climate zones, and shifting strategic conditions. Its publisher calls it complex, but the available descriptions do not establish a comparable numerical difficulty rating against the other games here.

Its add-on FAQ distinguishes major system expansions, regional immersion packs, and cosmetic content packs. That FAQ may not reflect every current edition or bundle, so check the live store listing before making a price or downloadable-content decision.

Which fantasy or fictional-world strategy game fits you?

Choose Age of Wonders 4 for faction creation and tactical battles

Age of Wonders 4 combines 4X strategy with turn-based tactical combat, according to its publisher. You shape followers using physical forms, societal traits, and arcane powers, develop an empire through magical tomes, and explore varied or custom realms. It fits players who want fantasy worldbuilding alongside empire-level expansion and battles they direct on a tactical map. Its tactical layer makes it a different kind of comparison from the historical examples above, not a mechanically identical alternative.

Consider Stellaris if you want science fiction rather than fantasy

A fictional setting does not have to be fantasy. Stellaris is a space-based strategy game whose publisher highlights procedural exploration, survey ships, customizable species and ideologies, diplomacy, and configurable fleets. It is worth considering if the appeal is creating or exploring an invented setting, but you specifically want science fiction.

A 2016 Game Developer postmortem offers launch-era context for the design challenge: historical countries arrive with familiar associations, while a procedural galaxy must build a sense of investment in other ways. Treat that as commentary on the team’s design experience at launch, not as a current feature guide or a universal rule about strategy games. Paradox’s support feature list, updated September 16, 2026, includes release-era language; the current game page is the better reference for present-day game details.

Use genre labels as a starting point, not a verdict

“Grand strategy” and “4X” can overlap, and neither label alone tells you exactly what you will do during a campaign. Age of Wonders 4 is explicitly presented as a blend of 4X strategy and turn-based tactical combat. Compare the activities and decisions the publisher describes, rather than assuming that games sharing a broad strategy label have the same structure.

  • If you want an invented setting in space, look at Stellaris.

Make the final choice around your preferred campaign

Ask yourself three questions before choosing: Do you want a real historical frame or an invented world? Would you rather manage a dynasty, a society, or a player-created faction? Should battles be part of a dedicated turn-based tactical layer, or is your interest more in the broader political and economic simulation? Your answers point to a better fit than a generic ranking: the official descriptions establish distinct emphases, not a measured head-to-head winner or a reliable comparative complexity score.
