An e-book is a digital book you read on a screen; an audiobook is a recording of spoken-word content you listen to. They may cover the same title, but they use different playback formats, can have different editions, and do not offer the same accessibility features. Choose by how you want to access the book, then check the edition and device compatibility.

What is the difference between an e-book and an audiobook?

The main difference is how you access the book: an e-book presents digital text or book content for reading, while an audiobook delivers spoken-word content for listening. The Publishing Accessibility Action Group describes audiobooks as recordings read aloud and performed by one or more voice actors; they may be abridged or unabridged, and may include descriptions of non-text content. The IEC’s definition likewise focuses on audio files containing primarily spoken-word content, played in a linear or specified order.

Neither format is defined by one particular device. An e-book can be read on a dedicated e-reader, a phone or tablet app, or computer software. An audiobook needs an audio-capable device or listening app. Which formats and features work depends on the file, publisher or intermediary, and playback system.

How do the formats compare?

What to compare E-book Audiobook
Main experience Read digital text or book content on a screen Listen to recorded spoken-word content
Typical playback E-reader, phone or tablet app, or computer reading software Audio-capable device or listening app
Edition details to check File format, DRM restrictions, and supported features Whether it is abridged and whether non-text content is described
Possible accessibility features Depending on the publication and reading system: reflowable text, text resizing, navigation, and screen-reader support Recorded narration provides audio access; it is not the same as navigable text or screen-reader access

What should you check before choosing?

Check compatibility

Before getting an e-book, check that your reading app or device supports its file format and any features you need. The Publications Office of the European Union notes that EPUB can be used with dedicated e-readers, mobile apps, and computer software, but not every e-reader supports EPUB. Publishers or intermediaries may also set format and digital rights management (DRM) restrictions, so a file’s compatibility can depend on more than its extension.

For an audiobook, confirm that your device or app can play the supplied audio and that the edition is available through your intended playback system.

Check which edition you are getting

An audiobook may be abridged, so check the edition details if you want the complete text. An e-book and an audiobook of the same title are also separate products, and they may differ in content or included features. The International ISBN Agency explains that an enhanced e-book with added audio or video is a different product from a version without those additions.

How do accessibility and reading needs affect the choice?

Accessible EPUB can support structured navigation, reflowable text, and adjustments such as changing text size, depending on both the publication and the reading software. These features may suit readers who need adjustable on-screen text or screen-reader access, but an EPUB file is not automatically accessible in every reading system.

Audiobook narration can be a useful preferred mode of access, but listening to a recording is not equivalent to using a screen reader to navigate digital text. WIPO’s Accessible Publishing Best Practice Guidelines for Publishers explains that “The experience of reading with a screen reader is nothing like having a publication read to you, or listening to a recording, and is much closer to reading by sight.” The right choice depends on the reader’s needs and on how the specific edition is produced.

Can you listen to an e-book?

Sometimes. An enhanced e-book may include audio, and EPUB can support synchronized text and narration when the publisher has implemented that feature. The W3C Publishing Community Group describes synchronized full-text playback as a common EPUB media-overlay use; full audio playback can also let a reader listen to an entire publication. These are features of particular editions, not something to assume about every e-book. Ordinary e-book text and a separately produced audiobook remain distinct formats.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose an e-book if you want to read on a screen and value features such as adjustable text or text navigation, provided the edition and reading system support them.
  • Choose an audiobook if you want recorded narration and have a compatible way to listen. Check whether it is abridged if completeness matters.
  • Look for a combined edition if you want text and narration together; verify that the specific e-book includes audio or synchronized playback.

There is no basis for treating one format as universally faster, cheaper, or better for retention. The practical choice is the edition that fits your preferred access method, accessibility needs, and available device.
