There is no single best treatment for every metal. Choose only after identifying the metal and its relevant dissolved form, measuring the source water, and defining the treated-water target. Adsorption, ion exchange, and reverse osmosis or nanofiltration can each be suitable in specific conditions; their performance, residuals, operating needs, and costs depend on the water and the system design.

The strongest comparative evidence discussed here is specific to arsenic, not metals as a group. Use it as an example of how to screen treatment options—not as proof that a process will remove a different metal from your water.

How the three treatment methods work

The methods differ in what they capture or separate, so the name of the metal alone is not enough to select one. Its dissolved form, the water’s chemistry, and the finished-water requirement all matter.

Adsorption: attach the target to a selected media

Water passes through a bed of media, and target constituents attach to available sites on its surface. Media based on aluminum, iron, titanium, or zirconium are among those used for inorganic contaminants such as arsenic, beryllium, fluoride, selenium, thallium, and uranium. A suitable medium must be selected for the specific contaminant; ordinary granular activated carbon should not be assumed to remove metals.

Media capacity depends on the medium, pH, contaminant valence, and other water conditions. When the media is spent, it must be replaced or regenerated. Spent media or concentrated regenerant then needs an appropriate disposal or discharge route.

Ion exchange: swap target ions for other ions

Water flows through a synthetic resin that exchanges ions. Anion-exchange resin is used for negatively charged ions, often exchanging them for chloride. Cation-exchange resin handles positively charged ions, often exchanging them for sodium. Resin choice and influent water quality affect capacity, and other ions in the water can compete for exchange sites.

EPA identifies anion exchange as an option for arsenic, chromium-6, cyanide, nitrate, perchlorate, PFAS, sulfate, and uranium; cation exchange is used for hardness and can remove barium, radium, and strontium. These are examples of applications, not a guarantee for every water profile or contaminant form. Resin eventually exhausts and may need regeneration or replacement. Regeneration can create brine or another residual stream whose handling and discharge or disposal must be planned.

Membrane filtration: separate a permeate from a concentrate

Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) use pressure to move water through a semipermeable membrane. Some constituents pass into the product water, also called permeate, while others are retained in a concentrate stream. RO is applied to a broad range of inorganics, dissolved solids, radionuclides, and synthetic organic chemicals. NF has different selectivity and is used for concerns including hardness and selected organic, color, and odor compounds. Rejection depends on the contaminant and the particular membrane; a general removal percentage is not meaningful without system-specific evidence.

Membrane designs need to account for feed-water conditioning, pressure and energy needs, cleaning and replacement, scaling or fouling risks, the share of feed recovered as permeate, and concentrate management. EPA includes membrane filtration among the established aboveground options evaluated for arsenic, but that does not establish its performance for every metal or source water.

Compare options against the same water and operating conditions

First screen for technical fit, then compare the viable designs on a like-for-like basis. A proposal that does not identify the target contaminant form, influent conditions, finished-water target, and residual plan is not enough to establish which option is preferable.

What must fit A target-specific medium must have suitable capacity in the actual water; pH and contaminant valence can affect performance. The contaminant must be in an ionic form suited to the resin; competing ions and resin design affect capacity. The membrane must provide the required rejection for the target under the actual feed conditions.
Water conditioning and controls Check pH and relevant constituents; define how media capacity and breakthrough will be monitored. Check competing ions and resin exhaustion; define regeneration or replacement and operating controls. Assess feed conditioning, pressure and energy, scaling and fouling, cleaning, replacement, and permeate recovery.
Residual stream Spent media or regenerant needs a suitable disposal or discharge pathway. Regeneration can produce brine or other residuals; handling and discharge or disposal conditions matter. Retained constituents form a concentrate stream that needs a management plan.

A practical sequence for choosing a treatment

  1. Identify and measure the target. Obtain a water analysis that names the metal, its relevant dissolved or speciated form where needed, and its influent concentration. Define the finished-water endpoint you must meet.
  2. Characterize the source water. Record pH and relevant competing ions and co-contaminants. If arsenic is the target, include iron in the evaluation because it can influence arsenic removal.
  3. Set the system constraints. Establish flow, seasonal variation, whether treatment is point-of-use, point-of-entry, or centralized, available space, operator capacity, and applicable permitting or compliance requirements.
  4. Screen for process compatibility. Consider adsorption when a target-specific medium fits the water; ion exchange when the contaminant’s ionic form and resin selectivity fit; and RO or NF when the required membrane separation and broader treatment needs justify pressure-driven operation and concentrate management.
  5. Compare the proposed designs. Request target-specific performance evidence under representative influent conditions, along with pretreatment, monitoring or operating controls, residuals handling, reliability and redundancy, maintenance, lifecycle cost, and expansion assumptions.
  6. Use a qualified site-specific design and verify results. Select sampling appropriate to the treatment system and confirm finished-water performance after installation and during operation.

What arsenic evidence can—and cannot—tell you

EPA’s historical full-scale arsenic demonstration program describes 50 systems across 26 states. The program reports that the systems affected more than 60,000 consumers and that each installed system operated under normal conditions for at least one year for performance and cost evaluation. These figures describe a historical program, not the number of systems currently operating or a prediction of performance for a different metal or water supply.

The same EPA page describes a 10 µg/L arsenic maximum contaminant level adopted in 2001. That is historical regulatory context; check the current applicable rules and jurisdiction when setting a project’s endpoint.

EPA’s November 2004 arsenic technology-selection and system-design report describes an iron-to-arsenic ratio of 20:1 or greater as a potential screening condition for iron-removal approaches under suitable operating conditions. The report treats this as a rule of thumb, not a universal threshold. It applies to the arsenic discussion and must not be carried over to other metals.

When the right choice is still unknown

If the metal, its form, the source-water profile, or the required endpoint is unknown, there is not enough information to choose among these processes responsibly. Start with a laboratory water analysis and have a qualified treatment professional evaluate the results and system constraints. This guide is a screening framework, not a substitute for testing or engineered design.
