Choose based on your roster’s Z Abilities and the current mode—not on color or the Tag label alone. A Tag Character can switch between its linked fighters in battle, but it remains one unit for effects that count party members. A single-color party may work well when its characters’ abilities support one another, but shared color by itself does not prove stronger synergy.
Start with Z Abilities, then check Tags and Episodes
Bandai Namco’s party-formation FAQ recommends building around Z Abilities. These abilities target particular Tags or Episodes, so the useful question is whether the characters you plan to use match the abilities supporting them. A lineup’s color is not a substitute for checking those conditions.
- In Party Formation, inspect the Z Abilities available from the characters in your roster.
- Long-press a character portrait and choose “Show Details” to inspect its Tags and Episodes.
- Use the Party Formation filter to find characters that match the Tags or Episodes your abilities target.
- Check the actual lineup and any ability conditions before committing to a team structure.
What a Tag Character changes—and what it does not
A Tag Character combines two linked characters into one battle unit. According to the Dragon Ball Legends help reference, the pair can switch through a Switch Gauge when it is full and the unit can act. Some Tags and battle attributes are shared, while effects tied to the character currently active apply only to that active character.
That switch mechanic offers in-battle flexibility, but it does not make the pair two separate party members. Effects that count party members with a particular character or Tag count a Tag Character as one character. If an ability depends on how many qualifying members are in the party, evaluate the unit using that counting rule.

Compare the two approaches against your roster

Check the mode before settling on a lineup
Team-building constraints can vary by mode and event. An official Tournament of Power announcement described six-character parties and boosts that varied by season; an official Tri-arena announcement described event-specific composition conditions and combat rules. Those announcements establish that rules can differ, not what is currently available or required. Check the live in-game mode details before applying either approach.

The official party-building guidance and Tag Character mechanics explain how to evaluate a lineup, but they do not provide current win rates or a direct comparison of Tag-focused and single-color teams. They do not establish that either structure is always stronger. Choose the characters whose abilities fit your roster and the current mode, then account for Tag Character unit-counting rules where relevant.
