Choose a flip phone if you value a compact phone and want a convenient way to frame self-portraits with its rear cameras. Choose a book-style foldable if you want a larger screen for composing or reviewing pictures, or if the specific model offers lenses such as a telephoto camera that you need. Neither shape guarantees better photos: compare the exact cameras and workflows, not just megapixel counts.
How the two designs change the photography experience
Flip phones: compact when closed
A flip phone folds shut into a compact clamshell. That can be handy if you want a smaller device to carry, and some models let you use the cover screen to frame a selfie with the rear cameras. Whether that preview and its controls work in the way you want depends on the model and camera mode. Samsung explains the format distinction in its flip-versus-fold buying guide.
Book-style foldables: a larger screen when open
A book-style foldable opens to a larger inner display, which can give you more room to compose, inspect, or show an image. It is not automatically a better camera viewfinder, however: live preview features and supported camera modes vary. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold camera guidance describes camera modes for Fold devices, including dual recording.
Check the actual camera system, not the phone’s shape
Camera hardware varies across models, including within the flip and book-style categories. For example, Samsung’s cited Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra specifications list a 200 MP wide camera, 50 MP ultra-wide, and 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. Samsung’s buying guide lists a 50 MP main and 12 MP ultra-wide configuration for a Galaxy Z Flip model. These are specifications for named products, not results from a controlled photo comparison.

Before choosing, compare the exact models for the features that match your photography:
- Main camera: Look for autofocus and stabilization details, especially if you often shoot moving subjects or in dim light.
- Ultra-wide camera: Useful for fitting groups, interiors, or broad scenes into the frame.
- Telephoto camera: Check whether one is included and its optical zoom range if you photograph distant subjects or want tighter portrait framing. Optical zoom is more informative than a digital zoom claim alone.
- Cover-screen camera workflow: Confirm that the rear-camera preview, framing, and shutter controls are available on the exact device.
- Folded-position controls: Check which camera controls remain accessible when the phone is folded or partly open.
Megapixel totals describe sensor resolution; they do not by themselves establish which phone takes better pictures. Lens coverage, stabilization, autofocus, software, and real-world results all matter.

Can you use a foldable’s rear cameras for selfies?
Some foldables support rear-camera selfies by showing a preview on the cover display. Google documents this workflow for Pixel Fold devices, including use of the cover display and instant review in its Pixel Fold camera help. A Tom’s Guide review of the Motorola Razr Fold also describes using its cover screen with the rear cameras for selfies and vlogging; that is a reviewer observation about that model, not a guarantee about every book-style foldable.
Do not assume every model exposes the same camera app, modes, preview, or shutter controls on its outer screen. If rear-camera selfies are important, confirm the workflow for the phone you plan to buy.

Choose the format that fits your camera habits
- Choose a flip phone if a compact closed phone and convenient rear-camera self-portraits are your priorities.
- Choose a book-style foldable if the larger unfolded display would help you compose, inspect, or share images, and the specific model has the lenses you need.
- If you shoot distant subjects, compare optical telephoto range rather than relying on digital zoom claims or megapixel totals.
- If selfies matter most, verify the cover-screen framing and shutter workflow on the exact model.
- If photo quality is the deciding factor, look for controlled comparisons of the same phones and scenes in daylight, low light, portraits, and zoom. The specifications and device-specific examples described above do not establish a universal winner.
