Choose 128 GB if your actual local-AI workload fits with room for macOS, the runtime, and other apps. Choose a 192 GB target only when a specific model, context length, concurrent workload, or set of open applications exceeds what you can comfortably run in 128 GB—and first confirm that the system you plan to buy actually offers 192 GB. More capacity can let more fit in memory; it does not, by itself, make inference faster.

What determines whether 128 GB is enough?

Start with the memory footprint of the workload you intend to run, not a model’s parameter count. The relevant combination is the model and its quantization, inference runtime, context length, number of simultaneous requests or models, and other applications that must stay open. The model’s active weights are only part of the total: context-related cache, runtime allocations, and the operating system also use memory.

Apple explains that traditional dense and sparsely activated language models require their weights to reside in active DRAM. That makes model weights an important capacity constraint, but it does not provide a universal conversion from parameter count to required memory. Look for a published memory estimate for your specific model and setup, or measure peak use on comparable hardware. Apple’s explanation of model memory and its AFM 3 Core Advanced architecture describes the distinction.

Do not plan to fill every advertised gigabyte with model data. Leave practical headroom for the system and the rest of the workload; how much you need depends on what else the machine is doing.

When to choose each capacity

Choose 128 GB when… Target 192 GB when…
Your documented or measured peak workload—including context and runtime—fits with room to spare. A specific intended workload exceeds the memory budget available to it on a 128 GB system.
You generally run one model at a time and do not need unusually long context or heavy parallel work. You need to fit a particular larger model, longer context, parallel inference, or multiple memory-heavy applications at once.
The 128 GB system’s chip, memory bandwidth, and software support suit your workload. You have verified a system that actually offers 192 GB and its chip, bandwidth, and software support also suit your workload.

Moving from 128 GB to 192 GB adds 64 GB, or 50% more nominal capacity. That is a capacity comparison, not a prediction of tokens per second, model quality, or any other performance improvement.

How to make the decision before buying

  1. Specify the workload. Record the exact model and quantization, runtime, target context length, expected simultaneous requests or models, and the applications you need to keep open.
  2. Estimate or measure peak memory. Use a published estimate for that combination or test it on comparable hardware. Include the runtime and context rather than counting only model weights.
  3. Keep headroom. Account for the operating system and other active applications instead of treating all nominal memory as available to the model.
  4. Compare the whole system. Check the chip, memory bandwidth, accelerator support, and runtime compatibility as well as capacity. If the workload fits comfortably in 128 GB, a larger memory number alone is not a reason to target 192 GB.
  5. Verify the exact configuration. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications for the system and chip you intend to buy; do not assume that a desired capacity is offered just because it appears in a comparison.

Capacity is not the same as speed

Memory capacity answers whether the active workload can fit. Inference speed depends on other factors, including the chip architecture, memory bandwidth, runtime, quantization, context, and concurrency. A 192 GB machine is not automatically faster than a 128 GB machine, particularly if their chips or memory bandwidth differ.

For scale, Apple’s August 25, 2026 Mac Studio announcement lists M5 Ultra configurations with up to 512 GB of unified memory and 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth. Those are Apple specification claims for that system, not a 192 GB configuration or an independent performance test. Apple’s MacBook Pro specifications list an M5 Max configuration with up to 128 GB unified memory; bandwidth is listed up to 614 GB/s depending on GPU configuration. These examples illustrate why a capacity figure should be considered alongside the particular system’s other specifications. Apple’s Mac Studio announcement and MacBook Pro technical specifications provide the configuration details.

What the 192 GB and runtime examples do—and do not—show

A 2025 comparative study tested an M2 Ultra Mac Studio with 192 GB unified memory. In its reported settings, MLX had the highest sustained generation throughput; MLC-LLM had lower time to first token for moderate prompts and stronger out-of-box inference features; llama.cpp was efficient for lightweight single-stream use; Ollama emphasized ergonomics but lagged on throughput and time to first token; and PyTorch MPS had limitations with large models and long contexts. These results describe the study’s hardware and test settings. They are not a universal runtime ranking and do not compare the same workload on 128 GB and 192 GB systems. Read the study abstract.

Ollama’s preview post describes an Apple Silicon implementation using MLX and unified memory. It reports a benchmark conducted March 29, 2026, with Qwen3.5-35B-A3B in specified quantizations, and recommends more than 32 GB unified memory for users of that preview workflow. That recommendation applies to the described setup; it is not a general minimum for local AI or a 128 GB-versus-192 GB comparison. Ollama’s preview and benchmark details explain its scope.

Check whether 192 GB is available on the system you want

Memory options depend on the exact product and configuration. In the Apple specifications cited here, MacBook Pro with M5 Max is listed at up to 128 GB, while Apple’s M5 Ultra Mac Studio announcement lists up to 512 GB. Neither source establishes a current 192 GB configuration for those systems. These are examples, not a claim about every manufacturer or product: verify the exact SKU and current regional availability before making a purchase decision.

One architectural exception to the usual memory rule

Apple describes its AFM 3 Core Advanced architecture as storing the full model in flash and selectively loading experts into DRAM. Apple contrasts this with traditional dense and sparsely activated models, whose weights must reside in active memory. This is a vendor-described architecture for Apple’s model; it should not be treated as a general capability of arbitrary local models or runtimes. Apple’s technical explanation provides the relevant context.
