Choose the app first, then select a machine or VPS that meets its documented requirements. Follow the app’s official deployment guide, configure persistent storage and access securely, and plan for backups and updates from the start. Self-hosting gives you control over the server and its data, but you also take responsibility for keeping the service available and protected.

What self-hosting means in practice

A self-hosted app runs on hardware or a virtual server that you control rather than being operated for you as a hosted service. That may be a computer, NAS, or Raspberry Pi at home, or a rented virtual private server (VPS). Either way, you manage the app’s configuration, access, updates, and recovery.

Start by defining the job the app should do, who needs to use it, what data it will hold, and whether it must be reachable from outside your home. Those answers guide both the deployment method and the server you need.

Choose an app that fits your deployment needs

Before choosing hardware, read the app’s official deployment and operations documentation. Confirm its supported operating systems and processor architectures, dependencies, resource requirements, storage paths, authentication setup, backup and restore procedure, and upgrade instructions. Do not assume a small device can run every app.

  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Requirements can differ substantially between projects and even between configurations of one project. For example, Supabase’s full self-hosted component set lists a minimum of 4 GB RAM, 2 CPU cores, and a 40 GB SSD for development and small-to-medium production workloads. Its documentation also notes that optional services can be removed to reduce requirements. These figures apply to that documented configuration, not to self-hosted apps generally. Supabase’s self-hosting guide explains its setup.

Choose where to run it

The main choice is between using hardware at home, renting a VPS, or relying on a provider’s template or management panel. The trade-offs are operational as much as financial.

Option What you provide or manage Access and flexibility Important trade-off
Local server You supply and maintain the machine, operating system, app, storage, power, and backups. Remote access depends on your home network, router, ISP, and domain and TLS configuration. You have substantial control over the setup. Existing equipment can make this practical, but power, connectivity, and hardware failure remain your responsibility.
Rented VPS The provider supplies the virtualized host; you still manage the operating system and app, along with backups and the hosting account. Public networking depends on the provider and your configuration. Flexibility depends on the plan and access it provides. There is a recurring hosting charge, and renting a server does not remove app administration.
Provider template or visual panel Some provisioning or deployment work may be automated; check exactly what the provider operates. Setup may be quicker, but configuration options can be limited. Verify how secrets, storage, updates, backups, and recovery work. Templates can lag behind upstream releases.

Compare the app’s actual requirements with available CPU, memory, and storage, as well as your network and power situation and the amount of maintenance you want to do. A rough comparison published by TechRadar in 2026 estimated a small VPS at $5–$20 per month and one SaaS tool at $20–$60 per month. Those are article estimates, not live quotes or an independently established market average; prices change, and the comparison excludes operator time, backup storage, and local electricity. See the article’s comparison.

Pick a deployment method supported by the app

Use the project’s maintained instructions rather than assuming one installation method works for every app. Compose is a practical single-host option when the project supports it: a YAML file describes services, settings, networks, and persistent storage in a repeatable configuration.

Docker Compose

Choose Compose when the app’s official guide maintains a Compose configuration and you want to keep related services and settings together. Review its image tags, ports, environment variables, volumes, and dependencies before starting it. The Compose file is a deployment description, not proof that the setup is secure or backed up.

Single Docker container

A single container can be suitable if the app is genuinely self-contained and its documentation explains persistence and restart behavior. If it depends on a database or another service, a single container may not be sufficient.

Native binary or service manager

Installing the app directly on the host can suit an operator who prefers to manage the application as a host-level service. Follow the project’s instructions for service configuration, storage, upgrades, and startup behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kubernetes

Kubernetes is most appropriate when you already operate a cluster or have a specific reason to use one. The app still needs persistent storage, routing, and ingress, and cluster orchestration adds complexity to a simple single-host deployment.

Templates and graphical panels

A template or visual panel may reduce command-line work. Before relying on one, confirm which app version it installs, whether it exposes the settings you need, and who is responsible for updates, secrets, volumes, backups, and recovery.

Set up the server and verify the deployment

  1. Define the use case and access. Decide who will use the app, what data it stores, and whether it must be reachable beyond your local network.
  2. Check the official requirements and procedures. Confirm supported operating systems and architectures, dependencies, CPU, memory and storage needs, configuration variables, persistent-data locations, initial administrator setup, upgrade steps, and backup and restore instructions.
  3. Choose local hardware or a VPS. Match the documented needs to the resources available, and account for storage, network access, power, recurring costs, and your willingness to maintain the system.
  4. Install the supported runtime and configuration. Use the project’s current installation procedure or maintained Compose file. Before startup, check the image tags, published ports, environment variables, volumes, and dependent services. Replace example credentials and secrets; never leave sample passwords in a public deployment.
  5. Configure the app’s external address and HTTPS. If people will reach it over the Internet, set up DNS and the external URL, then configure HTTPS/TLS at the app or through a reverse proxy, as its documentation specifies. Exact ports and forwarded headers are app-specific. Supabase says its default self-hosted setup uses HTTP and recommends HTTPS via a reverse proxy such as Caddy or Nginx for production. Check the Supabase deployment guidance.
  6. Start the services and check their health. Use the project’s status and log checks. If services do not become healthy, inspect logs and follow the app’s troubleshooting instructions rather than assuming a successful launch.
  7. Test persistence and recovery. Restart the app and check that its database and uploaded files remain. Make a backup and test restoring it before relying on the deployment.
  8. Establish an update and monitoring routine. Follow the project’s release and upgrade guidance, preserve configuration and secrets, and monitor service health. For example, Supabase says its Compose snapshots are released approximately monthly and warns that mismatched individual service tags can create compatibility risks; that cadence and warning are specific to Supabase, not a general rule for other apps. Review Supabase’s current deployment notes.

Secure public access and protect your data

Internet-facing services need more than a running container. Use HTTPS, strong unique credentials, and the app’s authentication controls. Understand which ports are exposed, and avoid publishing internal database or administrative services unnecessarily. Containerization can help organize a deployment, but it is not a guarantee that one service cannot affect another or that data cannot be exposed.

Back up the information the app actually needs to recover. Depending on the application, that may include a database as well as uploaded files or separately stored objects. Keep at least one backup copy away from the machine whose failure could otherwise destroy both the live data and its backup. Choose backup frequency and retention based on how much data loss you can tolerate; there is no universal schedule that fits every app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Follow the app’s own upgrade and recovery guidance. The official Memos deployment documentation covers Docker, Compose, binary, and Kubernetes paths, and directs operators to configure an external URL and proxy. It also advises checking that the database and attachments survive a restart and provides backup and upgrade operations guidance. Read Memos’ deployment documentation.
