Choose an underwater ROV by defining the job and operating conditions first, then matching the vehicle, tether, sensors, and control requirements to them. Start with the required depth and route; specify what you need to see or measure; then check endurance, payload, maneuverability, launch logistics, and operator capability. Verify the rating of the complete configured system—not just the vehicle enclosure—before deployment.

How to choose an underwater ROV for inspection, survey, or search operations

Write down what the ROV must accomplish and where it must operate before comparing models. “Inspect a structure” is not yet a complete requirement: the camera must resolve the feature of interest under the expected visibility and lighting, and the vehicle must reach it with enough tether and battery reserve. A survey needs specified measurements and compatible sensors. Search in turbid water or confined spaces may call for imaging sonar rather than a camera alone.

Use the same requirements for every candidate. Compare rated depth, tether reach and handling, camera and lighting, sonar or survey payload compatibility, payload and manipulator capacity, loaded runtime, thrust and control, environmental limits, launch and recovery needs, and support or spares. The available specifications here document one configurable example, Blue Robotics’ BlueROV2; they do not establish an independent cross-vendor ranking.

Define the mission and operating envelope

Inspection

For visual inspection, identify the smallest feature that must be recognized, the working distance, expected water clarity, and whether the vehicle must hold position near a structure. Match camera view and lighting to those conditions. A low-light camera does not remove the need to account for suspended particles, backscatter, glare, or shadows; plan a practical camera-to-target distance and lighting arrangement.

Survey

Specify the measurements and deliverables before choosing sensors: for example, whether the task needs seafloor altitude, imaging, or another survey measurement. Confirm that the sensor can collect the required data and that the vehicle configuration can carry and operate it. Do not treat a camera-equipped inspection vehicle as a survey system without checking navigation, sensor compatibility, and the data the job requires.

Search and recovery

Decide whether the target is likely to be visible to a camera, and whether the search area is open or confined. Imaging sonar can help locate targets in poor visibility; it is a different tool from a single-beam echosounder or altimeter. Also account for how the operator will search systematically and keep the tether clear of obstacles.

Record the operating envelope

Before requesting quotes or comparing configurations, write down the maximum working depth, horizontal distance from launch point, current and temperature conditions, visibility, time on task, deployment location, and recovery plan. Include any structures, entanglement hazards, or access limits. These details determine whether nominal specifications translate into a workable operation.

How deep does my ROV need to go?

Set the depth requirement from the deepest planned operating point, then check the rating of the complete configured system. Enclosure material, penetrators, tether, connectors, sensors, lights, and other accessories may not share the same rating. Use the lowest applicable limit and retain an appropriate safety margin; a component rating is not proof that every assembled configuration can be operated to that depth.

Blue Robotics’ BlueROV2 product page, accessed in 2026, lists the acrylic enclosure configuration at 100 m and the aluminum configuration at 300 m. Those are BlueROV2 configuration-specific vendor ratings, not general ratings for ROVs or independent test results. Confirm the exact build and ratings of all components before deployment.

How much tether do I need?

Do not choose tether length by matching it only to target depth. The tether also has to cover horizontal travel from the launch point, route changes, drift, and maneuvering slack. Estimate the actual route, including turns and obstacles, and avoid planning to use the entire tether length as usable working reach.

Longer runs also require a handling plan. The Blue Robotics buyer’s guide recommends its spool for longer BlueROV2 tether configurations. Match any spool to the tether’s type and length, and plan how an operator will pay out and recover the line without snagging it or letting it interfere with the vehicle. The operating guide describes tether management as an active task, not something the ROV handles automatically.

Do I need imaging sonar or an echosounder?

Choose the sonar by the question you need it to answer. Blue Robotics describes Ping as a single-beam echosounder/altimeter: it measures distance in a beam and can be used as an ROV altimeter for height above the seafloor. The Ping installation guide lists a 100 m sonar range and a 300 m depth rating. These are separate specifications: sonar range is not the same as the instrument’s depth rating.

Blue Robotics lists Ping360 as a scanning imaging sonar. That is the relevant distinction when the task requires imaging targets in poor visibility or a confined environment; a single-beam range measurement does not substitute for imaging sonar. Confirm that the selected sonar, mounting arrangement, software, and vehicle configuration support the intended operation.

Match payload, runtime, and control to the task

Camera, lights, and manipulators

A camera and lighting support visual work, while a manipulator such as a gripper is needed when the job includes handling or recovery. Check payload capacity and accessory compatibility in the exact build, including the effect of added equipment on balance and maneuverability. Blue Robotics describes BlueROV2 as customizable for inspection, research, and exploration, with a low-light HD camera, selectable lights, and accessory camera and sonar options. These are configuration choices; do not assume every item is included in a base package.

Endurance under expected load

Plan for the full mission: transit, inspection or search passes, repositioning, and return or recovery. Reserve time for delays and avoid basing the plan on the headline maximum speed or lightest configuration. Blue Robotics lists about two hours of normal use for a stated BlueROV2 battery configuration and notes longer runtime with light use. This is a vendor figure tied to its stated configuration, not an independently measured runtime for every payload or operating condition.

Thrust and operator workload

BlueROV2 is listed in six-thruster standard and eight-thruster heavy configurations. Compare the thrust arrangement and control behavior with the work: positioning near a structure, operating in current, or managing a tool may demand more control than simply traveling between points. Payload, current, and vehicle configuration affect what is practical, so seek model- and build-specific limits rather than assuming a thruster count alone settles the question.

The Blue Robotics operating guide describes the vehicle operation covered there as lacking feedback stabilization, heading holding, and depth holding. That makes active piloting and operator skill relevant to task planning. Confirm control features for the exact model and revision you are considering; do not assume the guide’s behavior applies unchanged to every configuration or later revision.

Use a consistent comparison checklist

Put every candidate against the same mission requirements, and ask the supplier to identify the exact configuration behind each specification.

  • Depth: rated limit for the assembled system and each relevant component.
  • Reach: tether length, tether type and strength, route allowance, and handling or spool plan.
  • Visibility and sensing: camera, lighting, sonar type, survey sensors, and compatibility with required data outputs.
  • Payload and task tools: payload capacity, manipulator options, and the effect of accessories on configuration.
  • Endurance: expected runtime under the planned load and operating conditions, with time reserved for recovery.
  • Control and environment: thrust and control capabilities, operator workload, and limits for current and temperature.
  • Deployment: portability, launch and recovery method, access to the site, and tether hazards.
  • Operations: training, technical support, spare parts, and total operating cost for the chosen configuration.

Ask for written confirmation where a specification is configuration-dependent or not stated. Do not treat a product-page maximum as a mission guarantee, and do not compare one supplier’s best-case figure with another’s differently configured system.
