A sale price is worthwhile only if the component solves a real problem, works in your exact system, and offers better value than suitable alternatives at the price you will actually pay. Check need first, compatibility second, and price last; a large discount cannot rescue a part that is unsuitable or unusable.
Start with the upgrade you actually need
Write down what you want to improve before comparing products. For a gaming GPU, identify the games and target display resolution or visual quality. For storage, estimate how much space you need and what drive interface your system supports. For RAM, consider the applications you use and the memory capacity your system can accept.
That workload-first approach is consistent with Microsoft’s Windows gaming guide, which frames hardware choice around games, display, and budget, and notes that a GPU affects visual quality and frame rate. The best fit is not necessarily the highest tier or the component with the biggest markdown.

Check compatibility before comparing sale prices
Use the specifications for the exact computer, motherboard, case, and power supply involved. A component that cannot be installed or run as intended has no practical value at any discount. PCWorld’s PC upgrade guidance also emphasizes checking system compatibility; confirm details with your device or component maker.
#1 Best Overall

- IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption
SSD: match the slot, form factor, and interface
- Check whether the system supports the drive’s physical format, such as M.2, and its storage interface.
- Confirm the motherboard or device supports the specific type of M.2 drive you plan to buy; an M.2 slot does not by itself establish NVMe support.
- Do not pay extra for interface speed your system cannot use. A drive’s faster interface cannot reach its full potential when the host is limited to a slower one.
GeekChamp’s upgrade-planning guidance notes that M.2 NVMe upgrades depend on motherboard support and that a faster generation in a slower system cannot attain the faster interface’s performance. Treat that as a compatibility prompt, then check your exact system documentation.
RAM: verify the system’s memory specifications
- Confirm the supported memory generation or type and the module form factor.
- Check the system’s maximum supported capacity and how many slots are available or already occupied.
- Choose a capacity that suits your workload, rather than assuming one kit works across all PCs.
Manufacturer upgrade guidance recommends checking technical specifications before buying. See PCWorld’s upgrade guide, then use the exact computer or motherboard specifications to confirm supported memory. This guidance does not establish one universally best RAM kit or capacity.

- SAMSUNG MAGICIAN SOFTWARE: Get the most out of your SSD with Samsung Magician's advanced yet intuitive optimization tools; Monitor drive health, protect valuable data, and receive important updates for your 990 PRO
GPU: check the target display, physical fit, and power
- Select a performance tier for your workload and target resolution, rather than choosing by discount alone.
- Check the card’s length and slot clearance against the case and other installed components.
- Verify that the power supply has suitable capacity and the required power connectors for the specific card.
NZXT’s graphics-card upgrade guidance recommends matching the GPU tier to the target resolution and checking case clearance, PSU wattage, and connectors. MSI’s prebuilt-PC upgrade guide likewise points to system specifications, including PSU and chassis constraints.

Once you have a shortlist of parts that meet your need and fit your system, compare them on the factors that matter to your use. There is no single validated score that fairly compares SSDs, RAM, and GPUs across categories, so do not collapse different kinds of performance into one deal rating.

| What to compare | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Workload fit | Does the part address the task or performance goal you identified? |
| Compatibility | Does it meet the exact system’s interface, form factor, capacity, clearance, and power requirements? |
| Relevant performance | Compare performance for your intended use and, for graphics, your target display—not a headline specification in isolation. |
| Capacity | Compare SSD storage or RAM capacity against your workload. GPU memory needs depend on the use case; no universal threshold is established here. |
| Total price | Use the current price for the exact model and configuration, plus any supporting parts you need. No live prices were verified for this guide. |
| Support and terms | Check the specific product’s warranty and return terms at the time of purchase; terms for named products are not established here. |
Calculate the cost of making the upgrade work
The advertised price may not be the whole cost. Include any necessary supporting hardware in the comparison—for example, a power supply only if the selected GPU requires more capacity or different connectors. MSI’s power-supply guidance directs buyers to the GPU maker’s requirements and a PSU calculator for sizing. Use the requirements for the specific card and system rather than treating a generic wattage figure as universal.
Then compare the total for each suitable configuration. A cheaper component that forces a costly supporting upgrade may not be the less expensive option overall. Conversely, do not add a part you do not need just because it is often bundled into upgrade advice.

Judge the sale by the actual alternatives, not the percentage off
There is no universal discount threshold or price floor that makes an SSD, RAM kit, or GPU a good deal. The percentage-off label does not show whether the component fits your workload, how it compares with alternatives, or whether the reference price is useful to your decision.

- Need: State the task, capacity, or display target the upgrade should serve.
- Compatibility: Confirm the exact system supports the part and can install and power it.
- Value: Compare relevant performance, capacity, total cost, and purchase terms across suitable options.
If a part fails either of the first two checks, stop there: its sale price does not make it a suitable purchase.
