Choose an SSD by checking your computer’s compatibility first, then matching capacity, performance, endurance, and warranty to the way you use it. NVMe is the faster-performance option when your system supports it; SATA remains suitable for systems that require SATA. An M.2 drive is not automatically NVMe: M.2 describes a form factor, not the drive’s protocol.
1. Check what your computer supports
Before comparing drives, confirm the interface or protocol, physical size, and any slot or bay requirements in the manual or manufacturer documentation for your exact computer. A drive that cannot connect to the system is not an upgrade, regardless of its advertised speed.
There are two common physical formats to check: a 2.5-inch drive, which fits a compatible drive bay, and an M.2 card, which fits a compatible M.2 slot. M.2 alone does not tell you whether the drive uses SATA or PCIe/NVMe. Solidigm’s technical guide describes M.2 drives that use either connection type, and SATA-IO likewise notes that M.2 can support different connections. Check the computer’s documentation for the supported protocol and M.2 drive length, as well as any system-specific requirements. SATA-IO’s M.2 overview explains the form factor’s connection options.
2. Choose NVMe or SATA
NVMe is a protocol commonly used over PCIe in consumer SSDs. It is designed for high-speed data transfer with parallel, low-latency data paths. SATA is a different interface and protocol. SATA-IO lists its current transfer rate as 6 Gb/s and says it has no plans to extend the bandwidth beyond that rate. SATA-IO’s FAQ provides the organization’s information about SATA.

| Option | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| NVMe over PCIe | Your computer supports NVMe and you want the performance potential of a PCIe SSD. | Confirm NVMe support, supported PCIe connection and M.2 length (if applicable) in the computer’s documentation. |
| SATA SSD | Your computer requires SATA, or you are replacing a SATA drive in a compatible system. | Confirm whether your system takes a 2.5-inch SATA drive or a SATA M.2 drive; these are different physical formats. |
NVMe is the sensible performance choice when a system supports it, but it does not guarantee that every task will feel faster. The host system and application workload affect what you experience. If the computer supports only SATA, a compatible SATA SSD is the appropriate replacement.
3. Select capacity for your files and expected growth
Estimate how much space your current operating system, applications, games, projects, and other files use, then allow for expected growth. Your budget and whether you regularly rely on external or cloud storage also matter. The figures below are examples from Solidigm’s 2022 storage guide, not universal minimums:
Rank #2
- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
| Workload example | Solidigm’s capacity guidance |
|---|---|
| Small business | 256 GB or more; 512 GB is suggested to leave room for growth. |
| Content creation | 1 TB or more; 2 TB is presented as a possible choice for projects and backup images. |
| Gaming | 1 TB or more as a starting point for an operating system and a range of games. |
| Student | 256 GB or more for smaller-file needs; 1 TB or more may suit science or engineering work involving larger files. |
These are manufacturer examples, not a guarantee that a particular capacity will suit every person in that category. A large game library or video project collection can require more space; a smaller collection or regular use of other storage can require less. Compare capacities only after you have established which drive formats your computer accepts.

SSD specifications commonly distinguish sequential and random read/write performance. Sequential figures describe access to or transfer of larger files, so they can be relevant to large-file work. Random figures describe activity involving smaller files in scattered locations. Many published specifications come from synthetic workloads and may not reflect everyday use. Solidigm’s technical guide to SSDs explains these performance measures and their limits.

- SPEED UP PROJECTS. Launch creator applications fast with uncompromising PCIe 4.0 read speeds up to 7,100MB/s,[2] (1TB and 2TB[1] models) and write speeds up to 6,700MB/s[2] (1TB[1]-4TB[1] models).
- CREATE AND STORE MORE. Make more room for your 4K videos and high-resolution images with capacities from 500GB[1] up to 4TB[1] on M.2 2280 built with our trusted 8th generation SANDISK BiCS QLC 3D CBA NAND.
- IT GOES WHERE YOU GO. With an all-new power efficient design, your drive delivers high performance with low power, giving you more time to be productive while on the go.
- UNCOMPROMISED RELIABILITY. With up to 1,200 TBW[3] (4TB[1] model) endurance rating, your drive is designed for creators.
- KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]
When comparing two candidate drives, look for independent tests that resemble your workload rather than choosing solely by the biggest advertised number. A peak throughput figure may not translate into a noticeable improvement if the computer or application cannot use it.
5. Understand TBW and the warranty
TBW means terabytes written. It is a rating for how much data is specified to be written over an SSD’s rated life; it is not a countdown to immediate failure. Compare the rating with the warranty terms and your expected write workload, especially if you regularly record or edit large video projects or perform other write-heavy work.

Solidigm’s technical guide gives product-specific examples: its 1 TB 670p is rated at 370 TBW, which the guide describes as equivalent to writing well over 200 GB daily for five years; its 2 TB 670p is rated at 740 TBW and has a five-year limited warranty. These figures describe those products in that guide, not a general endurance target or a current recommendation. Solidigm also says typical consumer applications do not reach SSD endurance thresholds, so for ordinary browsing, school, office work, and gaming, compatibility, capacity, price, and warranty may matter more than maximizing TBW.

Crucial describes its warranty as three or five years, or until the maximum TBW is written, whichever comes first. 6. Compare your final candidates
Once compatibility is confirmed, compare actual drives on the factors that affect your use. If a value is not established for a particular drive, consult its datasheet or warranty rather than inferring it from another model.
- Compatibility: supported interface and protocol, physical length or 2.5-inch bay, and any computer-specific requirements.
- Capacity: current data plus reasonable room for growth.
- Workload performance: sequential figures for large files and random figures for mixed small-file work; prioritize relevant independent testing.
- Endurance and warranty: TBW and the precise warranty period and conditions for the model and region.
- Total cost: the price for capacity and performance your system can actually use.
There is no single SSD choice that suits every computer and workload. The right candidate is one that fits the system, provides enough space, and offers performance and warranty terms appropriate to how you use it.
