First check whether your exact Samsung Galaxy model and regional variant have a microSD slot, then confirm that model’s maximum supported capacity. If it supports a card, choose a microSDXC card within that limit for larger libraries or high-resolution video; choose its capacity and speed for how you will use it. A card adds file storage, not internal phone memory.
Check that your exact Samsung phone has a microSD slot
Samsung warns, “Not all Samsung devices support MicroSD cards.” Galaxy branding or a series name is not enough to establish compatibility: some phones have no card slot at all. Look up the exact model number in Samsung’s support or specification material and check the device’s tray or user guide.
Also verify the regional variant. Samsung’s Canada compatibility table applies to phones officially sold in Canada and cautions that models sold elsewhere may differ. Samsung UK likewise says that maximum capacity differs between devices and models. Use those lists as regional references, not universal charts: Samsung Canada’s model-specific capacity list and Samsung UK’s SD-card guidance.

Confirm the phone’s maximum supported capacity
After confirming there is a slot, find the maximum card capacity Samsung lists for your exact model. Do not assume a limit from another Galaxy model—even one in the same family—will apply. Samsung Canada’s list, updated October 15, 2025, includes examples from older models capped at 256 GB to listed models supporting up to 1 TB; those figures are specific to that regional list.

Samsung’s US support guidance describes microSD cards as up to 2 GB, microSDHC as up to 32 GB, and microSDXC as over 32 GB through 2 TB. These are card-format capacity ranges, not a promise that every Galaxy phone accepts a card at the top of a range. For example, Samsung’s US support page for the Galaxy A26 5G says that model supports microSD cards up to 2 TB. Check your own model’s limit before buying.
Choose card type, capacity, and speed for your use
For high-resolution video or a large media library
When your phone supports it, microSDXC is the broad-capacity option for large libraries and high-resolution video. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video because of its larger capacity and high-speed read/write capability. Stay within the phone’s documented capacity limit, and consider how much space your photos and videos actually need rather than buying the largest card automatically.

For photos and basic file storage
For less demanding still photography or storing files, Samsung says a regular microSD or microSDHC card can suffice. Select a capacity that fits your library and remains within the phone’s limit. Samsung identifies speed as a difference among cards, but its guidance does not establish a universal speed rating for every recording mode or model; check the phone’s specifications and the card requirements for the recording you plan to do.

Format the card using a compatible file system
Samsung’s US guidance lists FAT32 and exFAT as compatible and prefers exFAT. FAT32 is available only for cards under 32 GB and does not support individual files larger than 4 GB. Samsung’s guidance says NTFS and APFS are incompatible. Formatting erases the card, so back up anything on it first.
- Back up files already stored on the card.
- Insert the card according to your exact phone model’s instructions.
- Open Settings > Battery and device care > Storage, then locate the SD card and choose Format. Menu labels and paths can vary with model and software; consult the phone’s guide if they differ.
- Confirm only after checking that you have copied any files you want to keep.
Understand what a card can and cannot add
A microSD card expands file storage for items such as photos, music, and other data. Samsung says Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, so the card does not become internal phone memory. Do not count on it to make every app movable or to increase internal storage available to apps.

Remove or troubleshoot a card safely
Before removing the card
Unmount the card before taking it out, as Samsung instructs. The tray and ejector procedure varies by model, so follow the guide for your exact phone rather than forcing the tray.

If the phone does not recognize the card
A card may not appear because it is incompatible with the phone, incorrectly formatted, damaged, or not seated properly. Check model compatibility and reseat it using the model’s instructions. If you consider formatting it, first back up data where possible: formatting erases the card.
