If you want to “freely explore” and find “tons to do,” first decide whether that means building, challenging combat, story and side missions, creative puzzles, or managing survival risks. Then check how much guidance, difficulty, and resource pressure you want—and make sure the edition runs on your platform.
Start with the loop you want to play
“Open world” describes freedom to move through a world; it does not tell you whether a game is relaxing, story-led, combat-heavy, creative, or focused on survival. A useful first question is: what would you be happy doing for most of a session, even when you are not advancing the main quest?
- Build and invent: Create structures, experiment, and set your own goals.
- Explore and master combat: Find routes and equipment, then take on demanding fights.
- Follow a story: Spend time with characters, missions, and a detailed setting.
- Solve environmental problems: Explore by experimenting with puzzles and construction.
- Manage risk: Gather resources and decide when a dangerous trip is worth taking.
One player’s request for a world that feels “comfy, green, beautiful” is a useful illustration of how personal the desired feeling can be, not evidence of a general audience preference (Reddit discussion, May 9, 2025).
Use this checklist to narrow your choices
- Pick the main activity. Decide whether you want to build, fight, follow a story, solve puzzles, or manage a community and its supplies.
- Set your combat limit. Consider how much timing and precision you enjoy, and how you feel about failing against powerful enemies.
- Choose how much direction you want. Do you prefer a clear authored story and missions, or a game that leaves goals largely to you?
- Decide on survival pressure. Hunger, health, supplies, and risky expeditions can make exploration feel more consequential—or more demanding.
- Check platform and edition compatibility. Confirm the exact version available for your device, market, and preferred way to play.
Compare the play styles
| Game | Main activity loop | How much it directs you | Combat intensity and failure | Survival or resource pressure | Story versus self-directed goals | Platform and edition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | Build and invent, or explore, gather, craft, and survive. | Low: the official guide says there is no set goal. | Survival includes combat with monsters; Creative is the lower-pressure building option. | Creative offers unlimited resources; Survival includes resource gathering, hunger, and health management. | Strongly self-directed; players choose what to make or pursue. | Official guide lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One and Series consoles, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and selected mobile and other devices. Check availability in your market and edition compatibility. (Minecraft guide) |
| Elden Ring | Explore, develop a character, and take on combat challenges. | Offers route and build choices, with exploration and different approaches available. | High: the publisher describes timing- and evasion-focused combat and difficult boss encounters. Some dangerous enemies can be avoided or postponed; spirits or other players can help. | Survival between checkpoints is part of the challenge. | Freedom to explore and shape a build; the official material does not specify a comparable story-emphasis rating. | The official page links PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam and identifies a physical edition. Confirm current supported platforms and edition details before buying. (Bandai Namco official page) |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Story-led Western play with side stories and simulation elements. | Not stated in the cited comparison as a comparable direction level. | Not stated in the cited comparison as a comparable combat-difficulty or failure-penalty rating. | Simulation needs are part of the experience, according to GameSpot’s editorial characterization. | Story and side stories are emphasized in GameSpot’s editorial characterization. | Not stated in the cited comparison. Check the current store listing for the platform and edition you intend to buy. |
| The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Explore, solve puzzles, and create solutions with construction tools. | Exploration-led, according to GameSpot’s editorial characterization. | Not stated in the cited comparison as a comparable combat-difficulty or failure-penalty rating. | Not stated in the cited comparison as a comparable survival-pressure rating. | Exploration and creative problem-solving are emphasized; a comparable story emphasis is not stated. | Not stated in the cited comparison. Check the current store listing for platform and edition details. |
| State of Decay 2 | Recruit survivors, build a community, and choose when to risk a resource run. | Choices about risk and resource trips shape play, according to GameSpot’s editorial characterization. | Risk is central to the described loop; a comparable combat-difficulty rating is not stated. | High emphasis on survival and resource management. | Community management and player decisions are emphasized; a comparable authored-story rating is not stated. | Not stated in the cited comparison. Check the current store listing for platform and edition details. |
The descriptions of Red Dead Redemption 2, Tears of the Kingdom, and State of Decay 2 are GameSpot’s editorial characterizations, not official specifications (GameSpot’s open-world games comparison). “Not stated” means the cited comparison does not establish that value; it is not a claim that the game lacks the feature.

Match the examples to your preferences
Choose Minecraft if you want to set your own goals
Minecraft is the clearest fit if the appeal is deciding what to make or explore rather than following a fixed objective. Its official guide says, “Minecraft has no set goal and can be played however you’d like!” Creative mode provides unlimited resources and flight for building; Survival adds exploration, gathering, crafting, combat, hunger, and health management (official Minecraft guide).
The choice between those modes matters: “Minecraft” does not automatically mean a low-pressure experience. If you want construction without the same resource and survival demands, Creative is the more direct fit; if you want gathering and danger to be part of the loop, consider Survival.
Rank #2
Choose Elden Ring if exploration should lead to demanding fights
Elden Ring gives players choices in weapons, magic, skills, routes, stealth, and allies. Bandai Namco summarizes that flexibility this way: “There is no one path through ELDEN RING. No one character build, either.” That freedom does not make combat easy: the publisher describes an emphasis on timing and evasion, survival between checkpoints, and difficult bosses. Players can sometimes leave stronger enemies for later, look for useful items, summon spirits, or cooperate with other players (Bandai Namco’s official game page).
Choose a story, creative exploration, or resource-risk loop
If a detailed world matters most because you want to inhabit a story, GameSpot characterizes Red Dead Redemption 2 as a story-rich Western simulation with side stories and simulation needs. If you would rather explore by solving problems and building things, its description of Tears of the Kingdom emphasizes puzzles and creative construction through Ultrahand. For a loop centered on making hard calls about supplies, GameSpot describes State of Decay 2 as a survival game about recruiting survivors, building a community, and choosing when to risk a resource run (GameSpot’s comparison).

Verify the platform and edition before purchase
Platform compatibility is part of the choice, not a detail to assume from a game’s name. Store listings and supported editions can differ by region and change over time, so check the listing for your device before buying.
