Choose an OLED laptop by its exact screen configuration—not the OLED label alone. Compare typical SDR brightness with typical SDR, HDR peak with HDR peak, check whether the panel is glossy or low-reflection, and look into panel-care features and local warranty terms. Battery life depends on the whole laptop and how you use it, so a display specification by itself cannot predict runtime.
How to compare OLED laptop brightness
Check whether a brightness figure describes typical SDR use or peak HDR output. Those numbers refer to different conditions, so a peak HDR figure should not be treated as the screen’s everyday brightness. If a listing gives only a peak number, look for the manufacturer’s detailed specification for the exact model and configuration.
Manufacturer examples show why the categories matter. ASUS lists up to 600 nits for a 1920 × 1200 OLED configuration of its Zenbook 14 OLED UM3406; configuration and regional availability may vary. Lenovo specifies 500 nits typical SDR and 1100 nits HDR peak for the Legion Pro 7 16IAX10H. HP lists 500 nits SDR and 1100 nits HDR for the OmniBook X Flip 16 16-cc0000 series. These are ratings for different products, not results from a controlled comparison. See the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED UM3406 specifications, Lenovo Legion Pro 7 PSREF, and HP OmniBook X Flip specifications.
- Compare typical SDR ratings to other typical SDR ratings.
- Compare HDR peak ratings to other HDR peak ratings, and check whether the figure is peak-only or sustained.
- Confirm that any HDR certification or display feature applies to the precise SKU you are buying.
Can an OLED laptop get burn-in from everyday work?
Burn-in is a risk associated with prolonged display of static, high-contrast content, particularly at high brightness; it is not inevitable. ASUS describes continuously displaying the same static, high-contrast image for a prolonged period as an extreme-use scenario. Its support guidance says, “Avoid displaying the same image at maximum brightness for a long time.” This is manufacturer care guidance, not an independent estimate of how often laptop panels develop burn-in. Read ASUS’s OLED burn-in guidance.

If your work keeps fixed interface elements on screen—such as a persistent tool panel—use a sensible brightness for the room, set a shorter idle time before the screen turns off, and enable the panel-care functions available on your model. ASUS recommends OLED Care where supported and warns against manually disabling its functions when applicable warranty terms depend on them. Its screen saver and maintenance settings guidance also discusses brightness and maintenance settings. Follow the instructions for your specific laptop rather than assuming every OLED model uses the same safeguards.
Check burn-in warranty terms for your country
Warranty coverage for image retention or burn-in can depend on the product, country, and conditions. ASUS product guidance describes a free exchange service for some burn-in issues during the warranty period, subject to country variation and OLED Care functions not being manually disabled. That is not a universal promise for every ASUS laptop or every region. Check the local warranty terms for the exact model and seller before buying; a brand-wide feature name does not establish that a particular claim will be covered. See the UM3406 product information for its model-specific details.

Does an OLED screen reduce battery life?
There is no universal runtime penalty that applies to every OLED laptop. Battery life is a whole-system result affected by the display as well as the laptop’s configuration, software, wireless use, brightness, power settings, workload, and operating conditions. Lenovo notes that actual battery life varies with configuration, software, wireless functionality, power-management settings, and screen brightness. HP also identifies usage, environment, temperature, system configuration, and power settings as variables in battery runtime. Those caveats are important when interpreting manufacturer claims, which may reflect a particular test setup rather than your own use.
For a useful comparison, rely on independent reviews only when their workload, screen brightness, refresh rate, and power mode are disclosed and sufficiently similar. ASUS recommends adjusting brightness to ambient lighting and describes automatic brightness on the cited Zenbook as a comfort and battery feature. No runtime figure alone can tell you what to expect under a different workload.

Are OLED laptop screens glossy or matte?
OLED does not dictate the screen finish. The Lenovo Legion Pro 7 16IAX10H specification describes a glossy OLED panel, while LG describes its 14Z90RS-K.APW6U1 gram Style OLED as anti-glare, low-reflection. These are model-specific examples, not a rule about all OLED laptops. Check the exact configuration’s finish wording and, where possible, view the screen under lighting similar to your usual workspace. A high HDR peak rating does not remove reflections from a glossy surface.
Look for wording such as glossy, anti-glare, anti-reflection, or low-reflection. Also check whether the configuration includes a touch layer or glass surface, since those details can affect the screen you actually receive. Compare the Lenovo Legion Pro 7 panel specification with LG’s 14-inch gram Style specification.

What to verify on the exact SKU before buying
- Panel resolution, refresh rate, color gamut, and whether the screen is touch-enabled.
- Typical SDR and HDR peak brightness, keeping the rating categories separate.
- Surface finish and any touch or glass-layer details.
- Which OLED-care features are available and enabled, plus the manufacturer’s recommended settings.
- Warranty terms for image retention or burn-in in your country.
- For battery comparisons, the test workload, brightness, refresh rate, and power mode behind each runtime claim.
Manufacturer specification pages can describe several configurations or vary by region, so match the listing, warranty, and review evidence to the SKU you intend to purchase.
