Choose an HDMI switch by matching its input-to-output layout to your devices, then verify that the exact model supports the resolution, refresh rate, gaming features, copy protection, and audio path you need. For a 4K/120 Hz setup, a label such as “HDMI 2.1” is not enough: check the model’s detailed specifications and make sure the source, cables, display, and any audio equipment support the same signal.

Start with the connections your setup needs

An HDMI switch lets multiple sources share a display input. A typical example is a 2-in/1-out switch: connect two sources, such as a game console and streaming device, to the switch, then connect its output to one TV or monitor input. A 4-in/1-out model serves the same purpose for more sources.

Check the port labels and signal direction before buying. A switch that selects among sources for one display is not the same as a device that sends one source to multiple displays. If you need the latter, an HDMI splitter may be the relevant product instead.

  • Two sources, one display: Consider a 2-in/1-out model. KanexPro and StarTech document switches with this layout.
  • Several sources, one display: Look for enough inputs, such as 4-in/1-out. RATOC and OREI document four-input examples; check the exact model’s signal modes and controls.

Match the video mode you actually use

Write down the resolution and refresh rate you need, then confirm that the exact switch supports that combination. For gaming at 4K/120 Hz, verify 4K/120 Hz explicitly and check for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) pass-through if your setup uses them. Check HDR support too, including any specific format or color-depth requirement that matters to you.

Do not treat a headline HDMI version number or bandwidth figure as proof that every desired feature works together. Product specifications describe particular modes and conditions; compatibility depends on the entire chain: source, switch, cables, display, and audio equipment. For example, KanexPro lists 4K/120 Hz, 8K/60 Hz, 48 Gbps, HDCP 2.3, HDR formats, VRR, and ALLM for its SW-2X18K, while StarTech’s two-port datasheet lists 4K/120 Hz, VRR, and ALLM. These are specifications for those products, not a guarantee for every connected-device combination.

Check copy protection and the audio route

Confirm that the switch’s listed HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) support works with the source and display. If audio passes through the switch to a receiver, soundbar, or other equipment, check the audio formats and routing described for the specific model. Do not assume eARC support: it is model-specific. OREI lists eARC on the BK-4929, but that feature should not be generalized to other HDMI switches.

Choose controls that fit where the switch will sit

Manual buttons, remote controls, and automatic source selection are all available, but auto-selection behavior varies. A switch placed within reach may be easy to operate with a button. If it will be behind a cabinet or near a wall-mounted display, a remote or suitable automatic mode may be more convenient. Before relying on auto selection, confirm how the exact model handles multiple active sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, StarTech documents manual and automatic selection on its two-port model; OREI describes remote, automatic, and manual selection for the BK-4929. These control options do not establish that different models behave identically.

Account for power and cables

Check whether the switch uses USB power or an included power adapter, and make sure the intended power arrangement works at its installation point. Review manufacturer cable guidance for the video mode and cable run you plan to use. A cable that works at a lower resolution or refresh rate may not be suitable for a more demanding mode.

RATOC publishes cable recommendations and compatibility information for its RS-HDSW21-8K and RS-HDSW41-8K models, including checks involving particular devices and test conditions. The company cautions that cable guidance cannot guarantee results in every environment. Treat compatibility lists as useful evidence for the combinations they cover, not universal assurances.

A practical buying checklist

  1. List the HDMI sources you want to use and the display input they must share.
  2. Choose the required number of inputs and confirm that the switch routes sources to one display.
  3. Write down the target resolution and refresh rate, then check those exact modes in the model’s detailed specifications.
  4. Verify the HDR, VRR, ALLM, HDCP, audio, and eARC features relevant to your setup.
  5. Choose button, remote, or auto-selection controls based on the installation and how you want to switch sources.
  6. Confirm the power method and cable suitability for the selected video mode and cable run.
  7. If a specific combination of devices is essential, look for compatibility information covering those devices and conditions, and check the seller’s return policy. A specification alone does not prove every combination will work.
