Choose by comparing the estimated annual cost against your home’s actual electricity use—not by picking the lowest advertised unit rate. Add the daily standing charge, apply each rate to the kWh used in its time band, and account for the meter, payment method, region and contract terms. A time-of-use tariff is worth considering when you can reliably shift enough consumption into its cheaper periods.

Start with your home’s actual electricity use

Collect 12 months of electricity bills or account data and note your annual kWh. If your supplier makes half-hourly data available, download it too: it can show whether demand clusters in expensive periods or whether substantial use could move to cheaper times. This matters especially for homes with EV charging, storage heating, electric hot-water heating or a home battery.

Also record your region, payment method, meter type and any existing day/night meter registers. Ofgem’s published prices vary by region and payment type, and meter arrangements can affect which rates apply. The Ofgem price-cap figures discussed below cover England, Scotland and Wales, not Northern Ireland.

Calculate the annual cost, not just the unit rate

For each tariff, estimate a full year of charges using your own consumption:

  • Single-rate tariff: annual kWh × unit rate, plus daily standing charge × 365.
  • Multi-rate tariff: kWh in each time band × that band’s unit rate, added together, plus daily standing charge × 365.

Include any relevant fees, and check when the contract ends and whether rates can change. Ofgem explains that the standing charge is payable every day, even when no electricity is used; it covers costs including maintaining the supply network, meter readings and government social and environmental schemes. Its price cap limits rates for covered default tariffs, not the total bill: “The more energy you use, the higher your bill will be.” Read Ofgem’s explanation of the energy price cap and standing charges.

As a dated reference point, Ofgem’s published average for Direct Debit electricity on a standard variable tariff in England, Scotland and Wales for 1 October–31 December 2026 is 26.32p per kWh and a 54.83p daily standing charge. These are national averages, not a quote for your home; regional rates and payment method affect the applicable prices. Ofgem also says electricity has no VAT from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, so it warns that costs cannot be directly compared with previous periods because of this tax-treatment change. Check the current Ofgem price-cap information for the relevant period rather than treating these figures as permanent. The cap does not limit the total bill, and it does not protect agreed fixed tariffs.

Compare the tariff types that fit your home

Tariff type How charges work How to compare it Main high-use risk
Single-rate standard variable or fixed One unit rate at all times, plus a daily standing charge. Multiply annual kWh by the unit rate, then add 365 days of standing charges and any relevant fees. A small unit-rate difference has a larger effect as annual use rises. A fixed tariff also has different price-change exposure from a standard variable tariff; agreed fixed tariffs are outside the price cap.
Economy 7 or another static multi-rate tariff Different rates apply in defined peak and off-peak periods. Economy 7 commonly offers seven cheaper overnight hours. Apply your actual day and night kWh separately to the corresponding rates, then add the standing charge. A higher daytime rate can outweigh overnight savings if relatively little use falls in the cheaper window.
Smart static time-of-use Regular time blocks have set rates, potentially with seasonal variation. Compare half-hourly usage with the published time bands and model only the loads you can realistically shift. Expensive peak periods can erase savings when routines leave much of your use in those periods. A smart meter is required.
Dynamic time-of-use Rates, and often time periods, change frequently in response to near-real-time wholesale prices. Use interval consumption and available rate history as an indicator, while allowing for future prices to differ. Prices vary more, and the tariff may reward active flexibility. Historical comparisons do not guarantee future costs.

Ofgem describes single-rate tariffs as charging one price throughout the day and multi-rate tariffs as charging different peak and off-peak rates. For an overview of cap rates and tariff structures, see Ofgem’s tariff and standing-charge guidance.

Decide whether a time-of-use tariff suits your routines

A low overnight rate is useful only if enough of your consumption can actually use it. Identify flexible loads—such as charging an EV, heating water or charging a home battery—and check whether your equipment and household schedule let you run them during the offered cheap periods. Then calculate the cost of everything that must stay in peak periods as well.

With no subscriptions or hidden fees, you get deep historical insights to help you identify every energy-saving opportunity and save 10–20% on monthly bills.
  • SMART ALERTS & CIRCUIT-LEVEL CONTROL: Set usage targets for each individual circuit and receive instant alerts when appliances exceed normal consumption. Refoss app supports automation and peak management to optimize schedules, reduce peaks, and improve efficiency. Real-time electricity usage monitor for circuit-level insights.

Energy Saving Trust says a smart meter is needed to sign up for a smart time-of-use tariff, and that if you cannot move energy use outside peak times, such a tariff is unlikely to work for you. Its guidance also distinguishes static tariffs, which use regular time blocks, from dynamic tariffs, whose rates and periods may change frequently. See Energy Saving Trust’s guide to smart time-of-use tariffs and its smart meter guidance.

Ofgem’s summary of two standing-charge rebate trials involving British Gas and ScottishPower reports more than 43,000 participants; the reviewed page does not state the figure’s year. One trial saw modest reductions in 4–7 p.m. use, while doubling the maximum rebate made only a small additional difference. Participants also described feeling more in control, but commitments and forgetting peak periods constrained shifting. Those findings concern the tested rebate design; they do not establish that a particular time-of-use tariff will save your household money. Read Ofgem’s summary of the standing-charge rebate trials.

Check the terms before switching

Compare the whole offer, not just its headline cheap period. Verify the specific hours and seasons for each rate, whether prices are static or dynamic, meter and other eligibility requirements, contract duration, rate-change terms and exit fees. Supplier availability and tariff conditions vary, so confirm them directly before deciding. Energy Saving Trust’s time-of-use tariff guidance explains why the pattern of your use and the tariff’s terms both matter.

Standing-charge reform is also debated. Ofgem has consulted on moving some costs into unit rates and expanding customer choice, while noting that some bills could rise and recording concerns about vulnerable customers with inflexible high energy needs. That context may matter to how charges are structured, but for your choice the useful comparison remains the estimated all-in annual cost for your actual usage. Details are in Ofgem’s standing-charges consultation.

A practical shortlist method

  1. Gather the inputs: Get 12 months of bills or account data, annual kWh and, if available, half-hourly usage. Note your region, payment method, meter and current tariff.
  2. Collect comparable offers: Record each offer’s standing charge, unit rate or rates, time bands, eligibility, contract duration, rate-change terms and exit fees.
  3. Run the annual calculation: Use the single-rate formula or apply your recorded consumption separately to each multi-rate band. Add the standing charge for 365 days and relevant fees.
  4. Model only realistic shifts: For time-of-use offers, move only loads you can schedule into the cheap period; leave peak-period use in the calculation. For dynamic tariffs, treat historical rates as an indication, not a promise.
  5. Choose on the total and the fit: Compare annual estimates alongside price stability, meter eligibility and your ability to follow the schedule. Do not assume an advertised overnight price or a typical household estimate will match your home.
