Choose an electric weed eater—also called a string trimmer or line trimmer—by matching its power source, cutting capacity and handling to your yard. A corded model suits work within reach of an outdoor outlet; a battery-powered model offers more freedom but requires planning for runtime, charging and battery cost. Compare the exact model’s approved line, head, weight and kit contents before buying.
Start with the power source: corded or battery-powered
The first question is where you need to trim and whether an outlet can reach those areas. A corded trimmer runs on mains power, so there is no battery charge to manage, but the extension cord limits movement and needs attention as you work. Consumer Reports describes corded models as suitable for a small yard and trimming within roughly 100 feet of an outlet; that is a general guide, not a guarantee about every yard or cord setup. Consumer.org.nz likewise notes that mains-electric models may suit tidying patches in smaller yards. Consumer Reports’ yard guide and Consumer.org.nz’s line-trimmer guide discuss these trade-offs.
Choose corded if outlet reach fits the job
A corded model can make sense for a compact, accessible area where you can route an outdoor-rated extension cord without repeatedly crossing the cutting path. It avoids battery runtime and recharge considerations. The cord is also its main constraint: it can snag on obstacles, restrict access to distant edges and require you to keep track of its position while trimming.
Choose battery-powered if access and movement matter more
A cordless trimmer is easier to take around obstacles and to areas an extension cord cannot conveniently reach. In return, usable work time depends on the tool, battery, vegetation and how you use it. You may need to pause to recharge or use a second compatible battery. Check whether the listing is a complete kit with battery and charger or a bare tool, and whether you already own batteries from that exact compatible platform. A shared platform can reduce the cost of adding tools, but it also ties future purchases to compatible products.

Do not choose on voltage alone. Voltage indicates battery power; amp-hours (Ah) indicate capacity. Consumer.org.nz’s December 2025 guide reports that its tested sample of more than 20 models from 14 brands ranged from 18–60V, 2.0–5.2Ah and 12–40+ minutes of runtime. Those are ranges across that sample, not predictions for an individual trimmer or yard. Consumer Reports gives about 30 minutes per charge as a broad expectation, not a model-specific promise. Compare the maker’s runtime information for the exact tool and battery, and consider the work you expect to do.
Match cutting capacity to the vegetation and layout
Cutting capacity is not one number. Swath, approved line diameter and head design influence how quickly a tool clears an area and how manageable it feels around plants, borders and obstacles.

Cutting swath: coverage versus precision
The cutting swath is the width cleared in one pass. A wider swath can cover open ground more quickly, but may be harder to control in tight beds or near delicate plants. Consumer Reports uses around 15 inches or more as an example of a wider swath; treat it as a comparison point, not a minimum you need. For narrow edges and crowded planting, maneuverability may matter more than maximum width.

Check the owner’s manual or manufacturer’s specification for the approved line diameter and type. Thicker line can be more durable and useful for tougher growth, but line that is too thick for a trimmer can bog down its motor. Line that is too thin may reduce cutting power. Sizes are not automatically interchangeable between models. Pro Tool Reviews’ battery-powered trimmer guide also discusses matching line to the tool.

- 6200 RPM: The POWERDRIVE Transmission delivers more power from the motor to the cutting string so you can get the job done faster
- The Automatic Feed Spool - AFS automatically feeds trimmer line when needed with no bumping required
- 2-in-1 Trim or Edge - easily converts from trimmer to edger in seconds
- It is quiet and easy to start, delivering great cutting results without the mess and hassles of gas powered trimmers

Feed system and head: consider reload effort
- Bump-feed: releases more line when you tap the head on the ground, as directed by the manual.
- Auto-feed: dispenses line as needed, reducing the need to bump the head.
- Fixed-line: takes short pieces of line that can be simpler to load, though they may need replacing more often.
Compare how line is loaded and how replacement heads or spools fit. If you dislike winding a spool, a fixed-line head may be worth considering, provided its cutting capacity suits the work. Use only the line, head or spool specified as compatible with the exact model. Lowe’s string-trimmer use guide advises matching replacement spools to the trimmer brand and model.
Edging and attachments: verify the system
Some trimmer heads swivel to support edging. Multi-attachment systems can let one powerhead handle other jobs, but connections and battery platforms are system-specific. Confirm that an attachment is designed for the exact powerhead and follow its instructions; a similar-looking connector is not proof of compatibility.

Check weight, balance and reach before committing
Compare the working weight with the battery installed, not just the bare-tool figure. Balance, shaft reach and handle adjustment affect control and fatigue, and a tool can feel tiring even when its listed weight appears manageable. If possible, hold it in a normal cutting position before buying. Consumer Reports engineer David Trezza, identified in its current buying guide as the engineer in charge of string-trimmer testing, puts the practical point plainly: “You’re going to carry this string trimmer, so you definitely want to consider weight and how easy it is to handle.” Consumer Reports’ guide also discusses trimmer handling.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Shaft shape: Curved shafts are generally shorter and can help with maneuvering around obstacles. Straight shafts usually offer more reach, including under shrubs.
- Adjustability: Check whether the handle can be positioned comfortably for your height and working posture.
- Support: A shoulder strap or harness may help with heavier models, if the maker provides or approves one.
Look at the guard and the space around the cutting head, too. Guards deflect some debris; a large gap between the head and shaft can collect tall grass. Keep the guard fitted rather than removing it to improve visibility. CHOICE’s line-trimmer guide covers features and handling considerations.

Compare the full ownership cost, not just the tool price
Battery models may be sold with different kit contents, and a low listing price may be for a bare tool. Before comparing prices, check what is included and what you would need to buy separately.
- Confirm whether the listing includes the battery and charger or is tool-only.
- If you own a battery already, verify compatibility with the exact trimmer model and charger.
- Check the manufacturer’s runtime information for the included battery and decide whether the expected work requires a spare.
- Look up the price and availability of a compatible replacement battery.
- Use the manual to identify compatible line, head and replacement spool.
- Check current warranty terms for the tool and battery separately; do not assume they have identical coverage.
- Count attachments as a benefit only if they are useful for your work and confirmed compatible.
Battery capacity, kit contents, replacement costs and warranty terms vary by model and can change. Verify the current listing and manufacturer information rather than relying on a platform-wide assumption. Consumer Reports specifically advises checking battery warranty coverage.
Use the trimmer with its guard and protective equipment
String trimmer line can propel debris. Keep the guard fitted, wear eye protection, gloves, long pants and closed-toe footwear, and keep children, pets and other bystanders away from the work area. Read the exact owner’s manual before setup and follow it for operation, line replacement and maintenance. The CHOICE guide and Lowe’s use guide provide general safety guidance; the manual for your model governs its specific instructions.
Use this checklist to compare two trimmers
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Power source | Outlet and cord reach versus cordless access | Determines where you can work and, for battery models, whether charging interrupts the job. |
| Cutting capacity | Swath, approved line diameter and stated power information | Balances coverage and suitability for the growth against control in tight spaces. |
| Runtime and ownership | Battery Ah, kit contents, charging needs, platform and replacement battery | Shows how much usable work time and additional expense to plan for. |
| Handling | Working weight with battery, balance, shaft length, handle and support | Affects comfort, reach and control. |
| Usability | Feed system, loading effort, edging and attachments | Influences routine convenience; verify compatibility before buying. |
| Safety and upkeep | Guard, manual, compatible line or spool and current warranty terms | Helps you use the tool safely and avoid incompatible consumables. |
There is no single specification that makes a trimmer right for every homeowner. Give the most weight to the constraint that affects your work: outlet reach, battery runtime, access to tight edges, cutting capacity or comfortable handling. Then compare exact-model kit contents and compatible consumables before deciding.
