Choose a home EV charger by matching its charging speed to your daily driving and parking time, confirming it works with your car, and checking that your home can safely supply it. Level 1 may be enough for modest driving and long overnight stays; Level 2 charges faster but can require a new circuit or electrical upgrades. Have a qualified electrician assess the installation before you buy Level 2 equipment.
Do you need Level 1 or Level 2 charging?
Start with how many miles you typically drive between home charging sessions and how many hours the car is parked there. ENERGY STAR’s U.S. consumer guidance gives broad estimates of 2–5 miles of driving range per hour for Level 1 and 10–20 miles per hour for Level 2. Actual range added varies with the vehicle, battery state, conditions, and equipment. Some Level 2 chargers on 50-amp wiring may charge faster. See ENERGY STAR’s EV charger buying guidance.
- Level 1: Uses a standard 120-volt outlet. It is the simpler, slower option and can meet daily needs for some drivers, including some plug-in hybrid owners. Some vehicles include a Level 1 cordset. The U.S. Department of Energy says overnight Level 1 charging can suit many owners when a suitable dedicated branch circuit is available. See DOE’s home charging guidance.
- Level 2: Uses 240 volts and is useful when you need to replace more range overnight, have a large battery, drive longer distances, or have a shorter or less predictable home parking window. It is faster, but the home may need electrical work.
You do not automatically need the fastest charger available. A slower charger that replenishes your usual driving during the time the car is parked may be the better fit.

Will the charger work with your car?
Check the exact vehicle’s model year, charging inlet, and owner’s manual before choosing a charger. EPA says almost all vehicles use the J1772 connector for Level 1 and Level 2 charging; its guide also notes that some newer vehicles began using the J3400/NACS connector starting with model year 2025. Adoption varies by make and model, so verify whether the car accepts the charger’s connector directly or requires an appropriate adapter. See the EPA’s vehicle charging connector guide.

Can your home’s electrical system support it?
Ask a qualified electrician to assess the electrical panel, perform a load calculation, and determine the circuit and installation requirements before buying a Level 2 unit. A home’s nominal service rating alone does not show how much spare capacity is available. The assessment should account for other electrical loads, the wiring route, charger output, and applicable permit and inspection requirements. DOE’s home charging guidance and charging infrastructure code guidance provide additional context.
EPA’s consumer guide says the circuit breaker should be rated for at least 125% of the charger’s rating. For example, a 40-amp Level 2 charger requires a dedicated 50-amp circuit under that guidance. The electrician and the equipment installation instructions must determine what is suitable for your home and local code. See EPA guidance on installing a home charger.
Plug-in or hardwired?
A 240-volt NEMA 14-50 receptacle is one common option for plug-in equipment; ENERGY STAR notes that plug-in chargers can be easier to move or replace. EPA says chargers rated at 48 amps or higher are usually required to be hardwired, and that hardwiring can offer better safety. These are not do-it-yourself installation directions: the charger’s rating and manual, circuit design, and local code determine the acceptable setup. Have the electrician recommend the installation type.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Where will the charger go?
Choose a position near the car’s regular parking spot, with enough cable to reach the inlet comfortably without stretching across a walkway or creating a trip hazard. For an outdoor location, select equipment rated for outdoor use; DOE explicitly advises that outdoor installations require outdoor-rated equipment. Check the product’s weather rating and cable length, and plan a safe cable route.
If you park on the street, ask your city whether curbside charging programs are available and check local rules before routing a cable across a public path. Renters and people in apartments or condominiums should coordinate with the landlord or property manager and check building and local requirements before buying equipment.
Which features and certifications matter?
Prioritize a compatible connector, sufficient cable reach, appropriate outdoor rating, output suited to the electrician-approved circuit, and recognized safety certification. ENERGY STAR says its certified chargers are tested for safety by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. Its published comparison also says certified chargers use 40% less standby energy than non-certified products, chargers spend about 85% of their time in standby, and Level 2 charging averages 10% greater efficiency than Level 1. These are ENERGY STAR comparison claims, not a prediction of an individual household’s bill. See ENERGY STAR’s charger guidance.

EPA’s current U.S. consumer guide estimates $400–$1,000 for Level 2 equipment and $300–$2,000 for installation. These are planning ranges, not a quote. Installation can cost more when the charger needs higher amperage, is far from the electrical panel, is difficult to site, or requires electrical upgrades. Ask for a written estimate after an electrician has assessed the home, and compare the total installed cost—including any panel, wiring, permit, and inspection work—not just the charger price. See EPA’s home charging cost guidance.

Are rebates or federal tax credits available?
State and utility incentives may be available, but they depend on location and current program rules. Check your utility and state program directly for rebates, managed charging offers, and applicable electricity rates. DOE maintains information on electricity-related incentives.
The IRS states that eligible residential charging property under Section 30C had to be placed in service before July 1, 2026. That federal placed-in-service deadline has passed. For the period when eligible, the individual credit was 30% of cost, up to $1,000 per charging port, subject to conditions including principal-residence use and location in an eligible census tract. Do not assume a purchase now qualifies; consult the IRS credit rules or a tax professional for a specific tax situation.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before you buy
- Estimate your usual daily driving and the hours the vehicle is parked at home; decide whether Level 1 can replace that energy or Level 2 is needed.
- Confirm the car’s connector and charging guidance for its exact model year, including any adapter requirement.
- Have a qualified electrician check panel capacity, circuit sizing, installation location, and permit or inspection needs.
- Choose plug-in or hardwired equipment with the electrician, based on the specific charger and local requirements.
- Measure the cable route and confirm outdoor rating if the charger will be exposed to weather.
- Compare safety certification, useful features, and the written total installed price.
- Check current local utility or state programs rather than relying on an old incentive listing.
