Choose an electric guitar by comparing the full cost of getting started, the sounds and controls you want, how the instrument feels in your hands, and the condition of the specific guitar. No pickup layout or body style is mandatory for a genre. If possible, try a few instruments before buying; specifications help narrow the choice but cannot tell you which neck, weight, or shape will feel right to you.

Set a budget for the complete setup

Decide how much you can spend on everything you need to play, not only the guitar. An electric guitar needs amplification to be heard as intended, so include a practice amp and instrument cable if you do not already own them. Fender’s beginner guide recommends accounting for those basics and notes that a bundle can help fit them into a set budget.

Before comparing bundles, make an inventory of what you already have. Then check what each package actually contains: a bundle is useful only if its included items fill a gap without making you pay for duplicates. Model availability and prices change, so compare current listings rather than relying on old price examples.

Choose pickups and controls for the sounds you want

Pickups capture string vibration and send the signal to the amplifier. Their type and position, along with the pickup selector, shape the range of sounds available. Yamaha’s electric-guitar guide explains how selecting individual pickups or combinations changes the resulting sound. Treat those options as a way to find sounds you like, not as rules about which guitar belongs to a particular genre.

  • The Squier Debut Series Strat features three single-coil pickups with 5-way switching that offers a wide range of classic Strat tones

Also consider how much switching you want to manage. Fender’s beginner guitar guide contrasts a Telecaster-style two-pickup, three-way arrangement with a Strat-style three-pickup, five-way layout. More positions offer additional combinations to explore; a simpler layout can make choosing a sound more straightforward.

Pickup configurations can also mix types. For example, an HSS layout puts a humbucker at the bridge with two single-coil pickups. Fender describes this as an option for higher-output rock and high-gain sounds. It is one possible setup, not a requirement for playing those styles; your amp, effects, technique, and preferences matter too.

Try the neck, scale, and overall fit

Comfort is personal. Compare the guitar’s weight and body shape, neck profile and width, fret access, and how it sits on a strap. Play a few common chord shapes, move up the fretboard, and try bending a string. Notice whether your fretting hand can move comfortably and whether the instrument feels manageable while standing as well as sitting.

Scale length—the vibrating length of a string from nut to bridge—can change how the strings feel under your fingers. Yamaha describes longer scales as tighter-feeling and shorter scales as lower-tension, which can make bending feel easier. Its guide gives examples of 25.5-inch scales on Fender and Yamaha Pacifica guitars, 24.75-inch scales on Gibson and Yamaha Revstar guitars, and 25-inch scales on many PRS models. These are examples, not universal specifications for every instrument from those makers. Use scale length as a comparison point, then try the guitar; a shorter scale is not automatically best for smaller hands.

Compare body construction with your playing context

Electric guitars commonly use solidbody, semi-hollowbody, or hollowbody construction. Sweetwater’s buying guide describes solidbodies as stable, versatile instruments that resist feedback at higher volumes. Semi-hollow and hollowbody guitars are also valid choices, depending on the feel and sound you prefer and where you play.

Consider how loud you expect to play and how the guitar feels against your body. Feedback may matter more in a loud setting, while weight and balance can matter whenever you wear the guitar for a long practice or performance. Body construction alone does not determine the sound: pickups, amplification, effects, and playing technique also contribute.

Inspect the individual guitar before you buy

Whether the guitar is new or used, check that it works and feels comfortable rather than assuming its model name guarantees a good experience. Fender’s setup support guide covers neck relief, string height, pickup height, electronics, and unwanted rattles or buzzing. Use this practical checklist while trying an instrument:

  • Tune the guitar, then play open strings and fretted notes in several areas of the neck.
  • Switch through the pickup positions and test the controls. Listen for dropouts, crackling, or settings that do not seem to work.
  • Notice whether the strings feel comfortable to fret and bend, and whether the neck feels manageable for your hand.
  • Listen for persistent buzzing or rattles. A setup adjustment may resolve some issues, but do not assume every noise is harmless.
  • If buying used, check tuning stability during your playing test and look over the instrument for visible damage or loose parts.

String height and neck relief are setup matters, and appropriate measurements differ by model. If a guitar feels wrong or makes persistent noise, ask the seller or a qualified technician to check it against the instrument’s specifications. An inexperienced buyer should not casually adjust the truss rod to try to solve a problem.
