To choose an eco-friendly island destination without greenwashing, check exactly what a sustainability claim covers, who independently assessed it, what evidence was reviewed, and when the credential expires. An island-wide destination assessment is not the same as certification for a hotel or tour operator—and a pledge, award, self-assessment, and certification are not interchangeable.
Start by checking what the credential covers
Look for the entity named in the claim: the whole destination, a hotel, a tour operator, an attraction, or another business. The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) maintains separate standards for destinations, hotels, tour operators, meetings and events, and attractions. A certified hotel does not establish that the island around it is sustainable, and a destination credential does not automatically verify the practices of every business on the island. GSTC’s standards and terminology explain these distinctions.
For an island-wide claim, check whether the defined destination boundary actually covers the island and its tourism system. Ask whether the assessment considers local infrastructure, resource use, environmental management, and residents’ well-being, or whether it concerns only a limited area or a single organization.

GSTC describes certification as a voluntary third-party assessment conducted through an audit. GSTC accredits certification bodies; it does not directly certify tourism products or services. A credible claim should identify the certifier or auditor and provide a way to verify the credential.

- Carry Loop & Wide Mouth Design: The built-in carry loop makes it easy to grab and go, while the wide mouth opening allows simple filling, adding ice cubes, and cleaning. A practical reusable water bottle for gym, hiking, camping, school, office, travel, and outdoor use.
- Certification: A specified entity has been assessed against a standard through a certification process. Confirm the scope, certifier, award date, and validity.
- Standard recognition: GSTC recognition indicates that a standard has been checked for alignment. It does not by itself establish that the certification process is reliable or that a destination is currently certified. GSTC cautions: “GSTC recognition does not ensure the certification process is reliable, only that the set of standards used to certify includes the minimum elements to ensure sustainability.” See GSTC’s terminology.
- Award or recognition: These may signal achievement under a program, but are not automatically equivalent to certification. Check the scheme’s own definitions and current status.
- Self-assessment or pledge: These can indicate a commitment or help an organization identify improvements. Completing GSTC’s destination self-assessment tool is guidance for improvement, not certification or official approval; see the GSTC Self-Assessment Tool explainer.
Ask who checked the claim, and when
Before relying on a label, find the standard or criteria, its version, the assessor or certification body, the assessment date, the certificate’s validity period, and any renewal or progress-reporting requirements. Check whether the assessment involved independent verification or relied mainly on the destination’s own statements. If the claim links to a scheme directory, confirm that the particular destination—not merely the scheme or standard—is listed in the relevant category and that its status is current.
Credential dates matter because programs differ. Green Destinations’ 2023.2 program document describes reporting against 75 mandatory criteria followed by technical checking and independent assessment. That document says its Award is valid for two years and its Certification for three years; those periods apply to that program document, not to other schemes. See the Green Destinations 2023.2 program document and confirm current program and destination status before relying on them.

Check whether the assessment covers more than nature
Tourism sustainability is broader than beaches, wildlife, or carbon claims. GSTC’s destination standard is organized around four areas, adapted to local context:
- Sustainable management: How the destination plans, governs, monitors, and improves tourism.
- Socioeconomic impacts: How tourism affects local livelihoods, employment, and residents.
- Cultural impacts: Whether cultural heritage and local traditions are respected and managed responsibly.
- Environmental impacts: How the destination addresses natural resources, ecosystems, and environmental pressures.
Look for public findings or outcome data across these dimensions, plus improvement actions—not only broad claims such as “green,” “clean,” or “low impact.” A useful assessment can identify shortcomings alongside progress.

Use Phuket as an example of why nuance matters
GSTC’s Phuket assessment ran from October 2024 to September 2025. It combined desktop analysis with a five-day onsite visit that included interviews with authorities and stakeholders. GSTC reported relatively strong performance in sustainable management, socioeconomic sustainability, and cultural sustainability, alongside significant environmental sustainability challenges. This is a destination assessment and diagnostic, not proof that Phuket is certified. Details are in the GSTC Phuket assessment summary.
The example also shows why a single badge or headline can conceal trade-offs. The same summary describes Phuket as having had over 10 million international visitors in peak years before the pandemic; that is a historical peak-years figure, not a current annual visitor count. When evaluating any island, ask whether its assessment acknowledges pressures created by tourism and what is being done about them.

Compare destinations on the same evidence
Do not treat different labels or standards as directly comparable without checking their scope, criteria, version, and assessment method. Use the same questions for each destination:
- Scope and standard: What entity and geographic area are covered, and which criteria or standard version was used?
- Verification: Who assessed it, and was the process independently audited?
- Currency: When was the award or assessment issued, and when does it expire or require renewal?
- Evidence: Are findings available across management, socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental impacts?
- Island pressures: Does the evidence address resource use, infrastructure, environmental management, and resident well-being?
- Individual businesses: Are hotels and operators separately verified, rather than assumed sustainable because the destination has a credential?
For example, Sentosa Development Corporation says Sentosa received a GSTC-D certificate in 2022 and describes a whole-of-island approach. That page does not establish current certificate validity, so check a current certification register before describing Sentosa as currently certified: Sentosa Development Corporation’s sustainability page.

Green Destinations’ collection distinguishes GSTC-certified destinations, awarded destinations, and white-label destinations; do not collapse those categories into “certified.” Its destination collection and the 2023.2 program document can help explain the categories and process, but verify current program details and each destination’s status.
GSTC’s inventory of recognized standards, dated 31 December 2024, illustrates variation in standard owner, scope, geography, version, and recognition date. It is not a live certification registry, and a standard’s recognition does not demonstrate a destination’s current performance. See the GSTC recognized-standards inventory.
Quick Recap
Greenwashing warning signs
- The claim uses “sustainable” or “eco-friendly” without naming the entity or area covered.
- A badge appears without the scheme, criteria, assessor, award date, or expiry information.
- A destination cites a recognized standard as if that alone proves its own current certification or results.
- Marketing language substitutes for public evidence, outcome data, or documented improvement actions.
- Environmental claims are prominent, but resident well-being, cultural impacts, and socioeconomic effects are absent.
- The claim presents only strengths and avoids known weaknesses or tourism-related trade-offs.
- A hotel or tour operator is described as sustainable solely because the island has a destination-level credential.
