For wildfire smoke, choose a mechanical air purifier sized by its tobacco-smoke Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR), not just its advertised room size. EPA’s rule of thumb is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. Separately, look for a California Air Resources Board (CARB)-certified model to screen for low or no ozone emissions: a particle filter and its CADR do not prove that a purifier removes ozone gas.

Start by separating smoke particles from ozone gas

Wildfire smoke and ozone require different questions when choosing a cleaner. Smoke includes particles that a mechanical HEPA or other high-efficiency pleated filter can capture. EPA says these mechanical filters do not produce ozone. Tobacco-smoke CADR measures particle-cleaning performance; it is not a rating of ozone or other gas removal.

Ozone is a lung irritant. EPA says inhaling it can damage lungs and cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and throat irritation, and may worsen chronic respiratory disease. Do not assume a product removes ozone just because it says “air purifier,” includes a HEPA filter, or has a high smoke CADR.

Size a portable purifier by smoke CADR

  1. Measure the room. Multiply its length by its width to get floor area in square feet.
  2. Calculate a minimum smoke CADR. EPA recommends at least two-thirds of that floor area. For example, a 10-by-12-foot room is 120 square feet, so EPA’s example calls for a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least 80.
  3. Allow for the actual space. EPA’s room-sizing guidance assumes an eight-foot ceiling; for a higher ceiling, choose a unit rated for a larger room. A larger-capacity unit may also be appropriate for an open layout or frequent heavy smoke.
  4. Check the model’s stated smoke CADR. Compare that figure with your calculation rather than relying on a marketing room-size label alone.

EPA’s indoor air filtration guidance covers portable cleaners and CADR. Its wildfire smoke guidance provides the sizing rule and room-use advice.

When sleep mode is activated, the noise level can drop as low as 15dB, operating nearly silently. It effectively cleans the air without disrupting your work, study, or sleep.

Screen for ozone emissions—and treat gas removal as a separate claim

EPA advises: “Use only California Air Resources Board (CARB)–certified air cleaners because they produce little or no ozone, a harmful air pollutant.” CARB certification is an emissions screen, not proof that a purifier removes ozone already in the room. Check a model’s current certification rather than relying on a general product description.

Avoid ozone generators for occupied homes. EPA says ozone at concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards has little potential to remove indoor contaminants, while ozone can harm health. Some electronic air-cleaning technologies, including ionizers, can also produce ozone, so check the device’s emissions and certification.

Removing gases is a different task from capturing particles. EPA says gas-targeted filtration requires activated carbon or another gas-targeted filter, and effectiveness depends on using a substantial amount of sorbent. It also notes that there is no widely used performance rating system for these consumer gas filters. A thin carbon layer is therefore a feature to investigate, not evidence of a quantified ozone-removal rate. EPA does not certify or recommend particular air-cleaner brands or models.

Compare the practical options

Option Best fit Check before using or buying Main limitation
Portable mechanical HEPA or pleated-filter cleaner Room-level cleaning, including homes without forced-air HVAC or as a supplement Smoke CADR against room area; CARB status; noise; replacement-filter availability and cost Particle CADR does not establish ozone-gas removal.
Central forced-air HVAC filter Homes with a compatible furnace or air conditioner MERV 13 or higher if the equipment can accommodate it; snug fit; fan runtime Filters only while the system runs. Check equipment documentation or ask an HVAC technician about compatibility.
DIY box-fan filter A lower-cost alternative when a commercial portable cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable MERV 13 filter; seal and airflow direction; a newer UL- or ETL-marked box fan Performance and noise vary; commercial cleaners more often have a known CADR.

EPA’s general guidance recommends MERV 13 or higher for compatible forced-air systems. Do not install a filter your system cannot handle; consult its documentation or an HVAC technician if you are unsure.

What DIY test results do—and do not—tell you

In a controlled chamber using simulated smoke made from smoldering pine needles, EPA measured these CADR results in November 2022:

Tested configuration Simulated-smoke CADR
Box fan with one 1-inch MERV 13 filter 111 ± 1
Box fan with one 1-inch MERV 13 filter and a cardboard shroud 156 ± 4
One 4-inch MERV 13 filter with a shroud 248 ± 15
Two 1-inch MERV 13 filters with a shroud 263 ± 22
Four-filter Corsi-Rosenthal box 401 ± 31

These are laboratory measurements, not guaranteed in-home outcomes. EPA reported that a cardboard shroud raised CADR by 40% for the tested design; that result should not be generalized to every fan-and-filter setup. Filter loading and poor sealing can reduce practical performance.

Check noise, upkeep and room fit before choosing

A purifier that is too noisy to run at a useful setting may be less practical during a smoke event. Before selecting a model, check its operating noise, whether replacement filters are available, their cost, and how often the manufacturer expects them to be changed. Filter needs can increase during smoky conditions, so inspect filters frequently and replace them when dirty.

  • Reduce indoor particle sources such as candles, smoking, aerosols and high-heat cooking.

EPA’s advice on room setup and operation is available in its cleaner-air room guidance and wildfires and indoor air quality FAQ. Filtration is one part of reducing exposure, not a guarantee that a home is safe; follow local public-health advice and use ventilation when outdoor air quality improves.
