How to Choose an AI Music Generator starts with one question: what do you need to make? A complete song with vocals and lyrics, an instrumental bed or sound effect, and a voice-led production workflow are different jobs. Then check whether you can download the result, what the plan allows, and what rights apply to that specific track. No single service is the right choice for every project.

Start with the deliverable you need

Choose a service built for the output, rather than assuming every “AI music generator” makes the same kind of music.

  • Vocal song with lyrics: Look for a tool that generates full songs and supports the kind of lyric and vocal workflow you want. Suno is one option to evaluate; its features vary by plan.
  • Instrumental cue or sound effect: Stable Audio 3.0 is positioned by Stability AI for instrumental beds and sound effects. Stability AI says it does not generate vocals or lyrics, so it is not a substitute for a vocal-song generator. See Stability AI’s Stable Audio comparison.
  • Voice-led production: If music is one component of a project built around voice, investigate tools and workflows specifically suited to voice-led production. ElevenLabs’ site describes an audio platform and music-related tools, but its affiliate materials do not establish that a separate ElevenLabs Music product category is eligible; confirm the product and its capabilities before choosing it.
  • Background music for media: Mubert Render and its API are presented for generated background music in videos, podcasts, ads, apps, and games. This is a use-case alternative, not necessarily a like-for-like full vocal-song generator. See Mubert’s information on its platform.

Compare creative control, cost, and downloads

Once the output fits, compare the actual workflow and the files you can take away. Check whether the plan includes editing, stems, uploads or reference audio if you need them, and whether the download allowance suits the project. A generous credit balance is not useful if you cannot export enough finished tracks.

Suno plans

Suno’s live pricing page, retrieved October 4, 2026, lists these prices and allowances. They are vendor terms, can change, and should be rechecked before subscribing.

Plan Price and credits Song downloads Commercial-use rights and notable features
Free $0 per month; 50 credits per day No monthly song downloads No commercial rights; shared queue
Pro $8 per month; 2,500 credits per month 20 per month Commercial-use rights; stems and priority queue, among other features
Premier $24 per month; 10,000 credits per month 60 per month Commercial-use rights; Suno Studio, MIDI, effects, automation, and additional editing tools

These are the allowances Suno lists on its pricing page, not independent performance measures. Match the download cap and editing tools to the number of deliverables you expect to export.

Stable Audio and local use

Stability AI’s comparison, updated September 9, 2026 and labeled last updated August 2026, says three of Stable Audio’s four models are open weights that can be run on local hardware. It describes commercialization under the Stability AI Community License, with organizations above $1 million in annual revenue needing an Enterprise license. These are Stability AI’s descriptions; review the actual license for your organization and deployment before relying on them. The comparison does not establish a comparable subscription price or download cap, so check current product terms for those details.

Check export access before committing

Download rules can change along with a service’s business model. The Associated Press reported on October 30, 2025 that Udio stopped downloads as it moved toward a licensed creation and streaming platform; the report quoted CEO Andrew Sanchez saying downloads from the platform would be unavailable. An AP report in February 2026 described Udio as still adapting its business model. If your project requires files you can store, edit, or distribute outside a platform, verify current export access and terms before paying or publishing. Do not assume a planned service feature is already available.

Understand rights at the track level

“Commercial use,” “ownership,” and “copyright protection” are not interchangeable. A service may permit monetization or distribution under its terms without guaranteeing that a generated work qualifies for copyright protection in your jurisdiction.

What Suno says about paid tracks

Suno says songs downloaded while a user is subscribed to a paid plan receive commercial-use rights, including monetization and distribution, and that it does not claim a stake in earnings. Its help page ties the grant to songs downloaded during the paid subscription; check the terms for the particular song rather than assuming a later subscription changes the status of earlier work. See Suno’s paid-subscription rights explanation.

Suno separately says it owns songs made on the Basic plan, which are limited to non-commercial use, while subscribers own songs made during Pro or Premier subscriptions. Suno cautions that ownership language does not guarantee copyright protection. It says music created entirely by AI may not qualify for US copyright protection because a human did not write the lyrics or music; it notes that human-written lyrics may be registrable separately and that other regions may treat the issue differently. This is Suno’s guidance, not universal legal advice. Its help page puts the jurisdictional point this way: “Copyright qualification and protection is determined by your region/country’s copyright office, not by Suno.” See Suno’s explanation of paid-plan rights and its ownership and copyright guidance.

  • 12 moods from happy and romantic to epic and mysterious

What to verify for any service

  • Whether commercial permission applies to the specific track, and whether it depends on the plan active when the track was generated or downloaded.
  • Whether the license permits your intended use, such as monetized video, advertising, an app, a game, or distribution through a music service.
  • Whether the terms address attribution, modification, redistribution, and continuing use after a subscription ends.
  • Whether your organization needs a different license based on its size or revenue.

For consequential commercial releases, read the current service terms and seek legal advice for your jurisdiction rather than treating a plan label as a copyright ruling.

Consider provenance and input restrictions

Rights also depend on what you supply and how the tool handles generated material. Suno’s Safety Center, updated October 1, 2026, says it attaches C2PA Content Credentials to generated songs to help downstream services and listeners identify Suno-generated tracks. Suno says it prohibits recreating existing songs, uploading material users do not have rights to use, and using another person’s voice or likeness. It also says it uses checks intended to block outputs similar to existing recordings and lyrics. These are Suno’s policies and described safeguards, not a guarantee that a track is legally clear or that a credential resolves a copyright question. See Suno’s Safety Center.

Before generating, use only lyrics, recordings, samples, and voice inputs you have the right to use. Avoid prompts or uploads intended to reproduce a particular existing song or imitate a person without authorization. Check the provider’s current rules and provenance information, especially if you plan to distribute the result.

Use this decision process before you subscribe

  1. Write down the deliverable. Specify vocal song, instrumental cue, sound effect, or voice-led production, plus where it will be used.
  2. Confirm the workflow. Verify that the plan offers the editing, stems, input options, and production controls you actually need.
  3. Calculate export needs. Compare expected finished tracks with the plan’s download cap, and confirm that downloaded files can be used in your intended workflow.
  4. Read the track-specific rights. Check the terms for when rights attach, whether commercial use is allowed, and what happens when the subscription ends.
  5. Check business and jurisdiction conditions. Confirm whether your organization needs an enterprise license and whether copyright eligibility depends on human contribution or local law.
  6. Recheck immediately before paying or publishing. Prices, allowances, rights, litigation, and export access can change; use the provider’s current terms, not an old comparison.

There is no independent comparative study established here that ranks these services’ sound quality or usability, so a universal “best” would overstate what is known. Choose by deliverable, portability, plan economics, and the rights you need for the finished track.
