Choose a context window from the largest complete request you actually need to send—not from the largest number in a model’s marketing page. Count your instructions, conversation history, files, code, images or other media, the answer you need, and (for reasoning models) hidden reasoning tokens. Then leave safety headroom. A 128K window is ample for many focused tasks; 200K gives more room for long documents and repositories; a 1M-token window is justified when you routinely analyze very large codebases or document collections in one request.

What a context window is—and what it is not

A context window is the maximum number of tokens available to one model request. The total can include the tokens you send, the visible answer the model generates, and hidden reasoning tokens used by reasoning models. OpenAI defines it as the maximum tokens usable in a single request; Google describes it as the combined input and output limit.

That makes a context window a per-request working area, not permanent memory. A model does not automatically remember an entire codebase, every earlier chat, or all files in your account. The application must place the relevant material in the current request, retrieve it, summarize it, or use a supported cache. A larger window also does not guarantee that the model will find every fact or produce a better answer. Attention can be diluted across a very large prompt, while latency and cost can rise.

The three token budgets you must distinguish

  • Input tokens: your instructions, conversation history, file text, code, examples and tokenized media.
  • Visible output tokens: the answer, code or structured data you ask the model to return.
  • Reasoning tokens: internal tokens consumed by some reasoning models. They may not appear in the answer, but they still use the context budget.

A model advertised as “128K context” therefore does not necessarily accept 128,000 tokens of input plus an unlimited answer. For example, OpenAI documents gpt-4o-2024-08-06 with a 128K total context and a maximum output of 16,384 tokens. The usable input is lower whenever you need a long answer or when hidden reasoning is counted.

How much context do common workloads need?

Start with the largest request you expect to send repeatedly, not an unusual maximum assembled once. The figures below are planning ranges, not guarantees of model quality.

Workload Practical starting point Why
Short question, small excerpt or single function Below 128K Most of the window remains available for instructions and a useful answer.
Several files, a long meeting transcript or a technical report 128K Usually enough when you filter unrelated material and reserve output space.
Several large documents, a medium repository or long conversation history 200K Provides more input room before you must summarize or retrieve selectively.
Very large repository, many books or multimodal archive 1M or more Useful when sending the collection in one request is a real requirement and the model, plan and API expose that capacity.

These are capacity choices, not quality rankings. A smaller, carefully retrieved context can outperform a huge unfiltered dump because the model has fewer irrelevant passages to weigh.

Provider limits are not interchangeable

Context limits vary by model, API snapshot, consumer interface and account tier. Check the exact model documentation and metadata immediately before committing to an architecture.

Provider Documented context information Important qualification
OpenAI The total includes input, output and, where applicable, reasoning tokens. OpenAI’s example for gpt-4o-2024-08-06 is 128K total with 16,384 maximum output tokens. OpenAI directs users to the exact model documentation for current context, token and output caps. Reasoning experiments should reserve at least 25,000 tokens for reasoning and outputs.
Anthropic Most API models are documented at 200K; the Claude API can ingest 1M tokens with Sonnet 4. Other models are documented at 200K or more. Paid Claude plans document 200K, while an Enterprise option provides 500K for Claude Sonnet 4. Consumer-plan and API limits are separate.
Google Gemini Many Gemini models have context windows of 1M tokens or more. Google gives a practical scale of about 50,000 lines of code or eight average English novels in one context. Model metadata exposes separate input and output limits.

“1M” in an API does not mean every chat application, paid plan or regional endpoint exposes 1M. Likewise, a 200K consumer allowance and a 200K API limit may have different rate limits, pricing and output caps.

How to calculate the window your work needs

  1. Assemble a worst-case request. Include the largest prompt, system instructions, conversation history, files, code, examples and tool results you expect to send together. Include media that the model will tokenize, not just visible text.
  2. Count representative samples with the provider’s tools. Google exposes input_token_limit and output_token_limit in model metadata. Anthropic recommends its token-counting API. Use the tokenizer or counting endpoint for the exact model family rather than estimating from character counts.
  3. Add the answer you require. If you need a 10,000-token report, reserve that space even when the input itself fits. For reasoning models, reserve additional room because hidden thinking tokens also count. OpenAI recommends reserving at least 25,000 tokens for reasoning and outputs while experimenting with reasoning models.
  4. Apply a safety margin. Leave room for formatting instructions, a larger-than-expected answer, tool results and changes in the model snapshot. A request that fits only by a few tokens is operationally fragile.
  5. Compare the total with the exact limit. If the sum is near the model’s cap, select a larger window or reduce the payload with retrieval, filtering, summarization, rolling history or context caching.
  6. Recheck deployment conditions. Verify the model snapshot, plan, interface, geography, API tier, rate limits and output cap. A recommendation is valid only for those conditions.

A simple sizing formula

Required context = input tokens + planned visible output + reserved reasoning tokens + safety margin. Choose a model whose documented total is comfortably above that result. Do not subtract only the advertised maximum output; reasoning models may consume an additional, hidden amount.

128K, 200K and 1M: what changes in practice?

Window Best fit What it can still require
128K Focused analysis, a handful of files, normal coding sessions and most business documents. Long answers and reasoning reduce usable input. You may need to trim chat history or retrieve only relevant files.
200K Long reports, multiple books or a larger repository when keeping related material together matters. It is not automatically available in every consumer plan, and a 200K prompt can still be expensive, slow or hard to retrieve accurately.
1M+ Large-scale codebase analysis, extensive document sets and multimodal projects that genuinely benefit from one broad context. Availability is model- and interface-specific. Cost, latency, rate limits and attention quality may make staged retrieval better.

The decision is not “bigger is always better.” If your largest request is 90K input tokens and a 20K answer, a well-configured 128K model may be too tight once reasoning and margin are included; a 200K model gives operational room. If your largest request is 300K, no amount of prompt compression turns a 128K endpoint into a 300K one—you need a larger model or a multi-stage workflow.

Will a long-context model remember your whole codebase?

Only if the application sends the relevant code in the current context or retrieves it when needed. A large window allows more files to be present at once; it does not create persistent memory or guarantee that every symbol will be recalled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a large single context helps

  • Tracing an interface used across many modules.
  • Planning a cross-cutting refactor where distant files constrain one another.
  • Comparing generated code with a broad set of tests and configuration files.
  • Finding interactions that a narrowly selected search result would omit.

When repository retrieval is safer

  • The repository is larger than the model’s usable input after output and reasoning reservations.
  • Only a small portion of the code relates to each question.
  • Files change frequently and sending a full snapshot would be stale or costly.
  • You need predictable evidence and citations for each answer.

A practical architecture often combines repository search or retrieval with a moderate context window: retrieve likely files, include their dependencies and tests, ask for an answer, then retrieve more when the model identifies a missing reference. This can reduce cost and distraction while preserving access to the complete codebase.

Documents and multimodal projects need different accounting

Do not estimate a document workload from page count alone. Tables, scanned pages, code blocks, repeated headers and formatting tokenize differently. Measure representative files with the provider’s counter.

Quality, latency and cost can favor a smaller window

Retrieval accuracy

Long-context models can accept more material, but acceptance is not the same as reliable use. Important facts buried among thousands of irrelevant passages may receive less attention. Filter duplicate content, keep related evidence together and tell the model what each file contains.

Latency and rate limits

More input generally means more work to process. Large requests can take longer and consume more of an account’s rate allowance. Check the provider’s current throughput and rate-limit documentation for your model and tier instead of assuming that a 1M endpoint behaves like a short-prompt endpoint.

Cost and caching

Pricing depends on the provider, model, input and output tokens, and any caching mechanism. If the same long instructions or reference files recur, context caching may reduce repeated processing where supported. Compare the cost of one enormous request with several smaller retrieval steps, including the output and token-counting overhead.

Why a long prompt gets truncated or returns an incomplete answer

  • The total exceeded the cap: input plus output and reasoning tokens crossed the model’s limit.
  • The output reservation was too large: the application requested a maximum answer that left insufficient room for the input.
  • Conversation history accumulated: older turns consumed space even though the latest question was short.
  • The interface has a smaller limit: a consumer chat product may expose less than the API model.
  • A different snapshot was selected: model aliases and deployments can change their limits.
  • Media was underestimated: images, audio or video added tokens that were not counted in a text-only estimate.

Recovery steps

  1. Log the exact model name or snapshot and the measured input-token count.
  2. Reduce the requested maximum output to the length the task actually needs.
  3. Remove duplicate instructions, stale turns and unrelated files.
  4. Summarize older conversation turns while retaining decisions, constraints and unresolved questions.
  5. Retrieve only the files or passages relevant to the current step.
  6. For reasoning models, restore a larger reasoning and output reserve rather than filling the window to its absolute limit.
  7. If the complete request is still too large, move to a model with a larger documented window or split the work into linked stages.

A decision framework for selecting a model

  1. Define the largest normal request. Record tokens for input, expected answer, reasoning reserve and margin.
  2. Set a minimum usable capacity. Choose the smallest model whose total limit clears that number comfortably.
  3. Check task quality. Compare how candidate models perform on your actual documents or code, not just their context headline.
  4. Check tokenization. Confirm limits for your data types, especially images, audio, video, tables and source code.
  5. Check access. Confirm that the required context is available in your API tier or chat plan, in your region and through the interface you will use.
  6. Check operations. Compare output caps, latency, rate limits, pricing and caching support.
  7. Choose a fallback. Define how your application will summarize, retrieve or split work when a request exceeds the limit.

When is a 1M-token model worth it?

It is worth paying for or engineering around a 1M-token model when your normal task genuinely needs hundreds of thousands of tokens together—for example, analyzing about 50,000 lines of code or roughly eight average English novels, the scale Google uses to illustrate 1M-plus windows. It is not worth choosing solely because the number is larger. If retrieval can provide the relevant 20,000 tokens with better focus, lower latency and lower cost, the smaller context is the more useful design.

For most teams, measure real requests first. Upgrade from 128K to 200K when output and reasoning reservations make 128K unreliable. Move to 1M when repeated, well-defined workloads exceed 200K and splitting them would lose relationships that matter to the answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final checklist

  • Have you counted input, output and hidden reasoning tokens?
  • Did you measure representative files with the provider’s tokenizer or counting endpoint?
  • Did you include images, audio or video in the estimate?
  • Is there room for a safety margin, tool results and a longer answer?
  • Does the exact model, snapshot, plan and interface expose the stated limit?
  • Have you tested retrieval quality, latency, cost and rate limits on your workload?
  • Is there a fallback for truncation, summarization or staged retrieval?
