There is no single best AI model for all mathematics. Choose according to the job: numerical work requires dependable calculation and independent recomputation; symbolic work requires exact transformations and preserved conditions; informal proofs require step-by-step scrutiny; and proof obligations that must be correct require a proof assistant such as Lean to accept a machine-checkable artifact.

Benchmark scores can help you form a shortlist, but they are not universal rankings or guarantees for an individual problem. Compare models on the task, test set, tool access, sampling method, grader, uncertainty, and your ability to verify the result.

Start with the assurance level you need

Before comparing model names, decide what “good” means for your work. A student exploring an approach can tolerate a different failure rate from an engineer publishing a numerical result or a mathematician submitting a formal proof.

Use case What the model should do What you must verify
Numerical problem solving Set up the method, calculate consistently, expose assumptions, and use code or another computation tool when available. Recompute independently, check units, inspect intermediate values, and test sensitivity to assumptions.
Symbolic algebra or calculus Apply exact transformations while preserving domains, signs, notation, and side conditions. Substitute the result back, test boundary and exceptional cases, and use a computer algebra system when the expression matters.
Informal proof exploration Suggest lemmas, organize cases, and explain a plausible chain of implications. Check every inference, hidden assumption, quantifier, and edge case. Fluency is not proof validation.
Formal proof obligation Generate tactics or proof terms compatible with the chosen assistant and its libraries. Run the artifact through the proof assistant. Acceptance by the checker is the assurance event.

A model can be useful in more than one row, but the verification standard does not automatically transfer. A high contest score does not establish that a model can produce an accepted Lean proof, and a correct numeric answer does not establish that its explanation is logically sound.

How to choose for numerical problems

Prioritize calculation controls over eloquence

For arithmetic, statistics, physics, finance, or engineering, compare a model’s ability to keep multi-step calculations consistent and to use an executable calculator, notebook, or code interpreter. Ask it to state units, significant assumptions, and intermediate values. If the interface cannot execute code, treat every nontrivial arithmetic result as a proposal to check rather than a computed fact.

Google Research’s Minerva report documented both calculation mistakes and reasoning errors. It also notes that a model may reach a correct final answer through faulty reasoning that is not automatically detected. That is why a second computation is part of the workflow, not an optional confidence boost.

A verification workflow that scales

  1. Specify the inputs. Give units, precision, rounding rules, domain restrictions, and whether an answer should be exact or approximate.
  2. Request a structured setup. Have the model define variables and write the governing equation before substituting numbers.
  3. Execute independently. Recalculate with a trusted calculator, spreadsheet, script, or domain tool. Use a different implementation when the result is consequential.
  4. Compare intermediate values. A matching final number can hide a compensating error; compare dimensions, signs, exponents, and each major intermediate result.
  5. Probe edge cases. Try zero, negative, limiting, maximum, minimum, and ill-conditioned inputs where they make sense.
  6. Record provenance. Keep the model version, prompt, tool state, input data, and verification output so another person can reproduce the result.

When tool access changes the choice

A model that can execute code may be preferable for large tables, iterative methods, numerical integration, or error propagation, but execution does not make the generated method correct. Inspect the code, dependencies, precision, random seeds, and convergence criteria. If no tool is available, use the model for setup and explanation, then run the actual computation elsewhere.

How to choose for symbolic mathematics

Check exactness and conditions

Symbolic tasks include factoring, integration, differentiation, simplification, equation solving, and transformations of matrices or tensors. The failure mode is often not an obvious arithmetic slip; it is an omitted domain condition. Ask the model to state restrictions such as denominators being nonzero, logarithm arguments being positive, square-root branches, differentiability assumptions, or invertibility requirements.

Google describes Minerva as performing numerical calculations and symbolic manipulation without external tools, while cautioning that its natural-language approach has no explicit underlying mathematical structure and cannot automatically verify answers. Use such output as a candidate derivation.

Tests for a symbolic result

  • Substitute the proposed expression into the original equation or identity.
  • Differentiate an antiderivative and simplify the difference from the integrand.
  • Evaluate both sides at several legal numerical points, including points near boundaries.
  • Check excluded values and branch choices separately; numerical agreement on ordinary points can miss a domain error.
  • Use a computer algebra system for canonical simplification, factoring, or exact substitution when the expression is long.

For transformations that are only conditionally valid, require the model to label each equivalence as an implication, equivalence under assumptions, or heuristic simplification. This makes it easier to distinguish a reversible step from one that loses solutions.

How to choose for informal proofs

Use models as proof partners, not authorities

Reasoning models can propose an induction, identify an invariant, suggest a contradiction, or find a useful lemma. Ask for a short proof with numbered claims and the justification for each implication. Then inspect the argument yourself. Contest-benchmark performance measures performance on a defined set; it does not certify a new theorem or detect every hidden gap.

OpenAI’s process-supervision research reported better results from assessing intermediate steps than from judging only final outcomes in its MATH experiments. The work also says that generalization beyond those mathematics settings is unknown. Step-level scoring is therefore evidence about an evaluation method, not a guarantee that a visible chain of reasoning is valid.

A manual proof audit

  1. Restate the claim. Identify all quantifiers and whether the statement is universal, existential, or conditional.
  2. List definitions. Replace informal words such as “obvious,” “generic,” or “clearly” with the precise definition being used.
  3. Check dependencies. Confirm that every theorem invoked applies to the stated objects and hypotheses.
  4. Test the case split. Look for missing zero, boundary, degenerate, or equality cases.
  5. Inspect direction. Ensure an implication was not silently treated as an equivalence.
  6. Try to falsify. Search for a small counterexample or ask a second model to attack the argument rather than endorse it.

A model’s answer can be useful even when it fails: the incorrect step may reveal the lemma you need to prove or the case your draft overlooked. Preserve that exploratory role separate from the final mathematical claim.

How to choose for formal proofs

Understand the assurance difference

A natural-language proof is persuasive text. A formal proof is an artifact accepted by a proof assistant after its kernel checks every inference against the statement and imported libraries. For a requirement such as “the theorem must be correct,” the latter is the relevant standard.

OpenAI’s formal-mathematics work describes models generating tactic calls and mathematical terms while a formal system verifies whether the statement is proved. The same report cautions that challenging olympiad problems were closed only occasionally, not consistently. A model can therefore be a productive tactic-search assistant without being a dependable autonomous prover.

Evaluate the complete formal workflow

  • Library compatibility: verify that the model knows the syntax, namespaces, definitions, and theorem names for your assistant and version.
  • Statement fidelity: check that the formal theorem expresses the intended informal claim, including all hypotheses.
  • Compilation: run the exact file with pinned dependencies. A pasted tactic that is not compiled is only a suggestion.
  • Maintainability: prefer short, readable proofs over brittle searches when the artifact will be maintained.
  • Failure recovery: reduce the goal, isolate the failing tactic, and ask for a smaller lemma instead of repeatedly requesting a complete proof.

For high-assurance work, keep the accepted proof artifact, assistant version, library commit, and build command. The model’s explanation can accompany the artifact, but it is not a substitute for the checker.

What benchmark scores actually tell you

Scores are meaningful only with their owner, date, model/version, settings, tools, sample count, test set, and grading method. Results from separate suites are not interchangeable and should not be averaged into a universal leaderboard.

Reported result What it measures How to interpret it
Gemini 3.1 Deep Think: 81.5% on the International Math Olympiad 2025 evaluation (Google DeepMind, 2026) A publisher-reported contest evaluation; the table is headed “Gemini 3.1 Deep Think Feb 2026.” The same table lists GPT-5.2 Thinking (xhigh) at 71.4% and Gemini 3 Pro Preview Thinking (High) at 14.3%. Treat the figures as results under that methodology, not an independently reproduced head-to-head test.
GPT-5: 91.8% ± 1.5 on SMT 2025; 91.9% ± 2.0 on OTIS-AIME 2025; 85.9% ± 3.5 on PUMaC 2024 (NIST CAISI, 2025) Three mathematics task sets containing 58, 30, and 55 problems, respectively. Percentages are tasks solved with standard errors. CAISI describes using o4-mini to judge equivalence of submitted mathematical expressions to ground-truth answers. The report also includes Anthropic Opus 4, OpenAI gpt-oss, DeepSeek V3.1, DeepSeek R1-0528, and DeepSeek R1; their scores should be read from the same table and conditions.
Minerva 540B: 50.3% on MATH, 75% on MMLU-STEM, 30.8% on OCWCourses, and 78.5% on GSM8k (Google Research, 2022) Historical research benchmarks for a large language model. These are not current product recommendations. The report’s error analysis found calculation and reasoning errors and says the natural-language approach cannot automatically verify its answers.
GPT-4: 39%; GPT-5.2: 92% on GPQA (OpenAI, 2025) Expert science questions rather than a math-specific evaluation. Use it only as background on science-question performance, not as a direct score for symbolic mathematics or proof generation.

Read uncertainty and grading details

A score without an uncertainty estimate can exaggerate small differences. CAISI reports standard errors and task counts; a few percentage points may not establish a meaningful advantage when the test is small. Also inspect whether answers were graded exactly, by symbolic equivalence, by a model judge, or by a human rubric. A grader that accepts equivalent mathematical expressions is different from one that evaluates proof validity or explanatory quality.

Watch for selection and contamination effects

Check whether test questions may have appeared in training data, whether tools or multiple samples were allowed, and whether the publisher selected tasks against its own models. OpenAI notes that some FrontierScience tasks were selected against its internal models, which may bias comparisons against those models relative to others. Its report also discusses model-based grading and rubric limitations. These qualifications belong alongside the score, not in a footnote detached from it.

A practical model-selection procedure

  1. Define the deliverable. Choose among a number, symbolic expression, informal argument, or accepted formal artifact.
  2. Set the verification bar. Decide whether independent recomputation, substitution tests, peer review, or proof-assistant acceptance is mandatory.
  3. Create a representative test set. Use problems from your actual domain, including routine, difficult, and adversarial cases. Keep a private holdout set for final comparison.
  4. Normalize conditions. Record model version, reasoning mode, temperature or sampling settings when exposed, context length, tool access, and number of attempts.
  5. Score more than final answers. Track exact correctness, valid assumptions, intermediate consistency, time, tool failures, and the amount of human repair required.
  6. Estimate reliability. Repeat tasks or use a larger sample where possible; report uncertainty rather than ranking models by one impressive example.
  7. Choose the cheapest workflow that meets the bar. A smaller model with deterministic computation may beat a stronger conversational model for routine arithmetic, while formal proof search may justify a slower reasoning model.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“The highest benchmark score is best for me”

Different suites test different abilities, and scores from the IMO evaluation, CAISI task sets, MATH, GPQA, or proof-assistant experiments cannot be directly combined. Match the evaluation to your workload and rerun a local test set.

“The answer is right, so the proof is right”

Minerva’s analysis explicitly describes correct final answers supported by faulty reasoning. Verify the derivation or formal artifact separately from the endpoint.

“A detailed explanation must be trustworthy”

Length and confidence do not establish validity. Require numbered claims, explicit assumptions, and checks that can fail visibly.

“A formal-looking response is a formal proof”

Only the proof assistant’s accepted artifact provides that assurance. Copying syntax that has not compiled is not verification.

“Tool use removes the need for review”

Code can faithfully execute a mistaken formula, wrong unit conversion, or unstable algorithm. Review both the method and the execution.

Access, cost, and operational constraints

The published evidence does not establish current regional pricing, usage caps, or access tiers for the models mentioned. Treat subscription and availability decisions as a separate, current check. For organizational use, also evaluate data-retention controls, exportability, rate limits, audit logs, and whether tool execution is permitted in your environment.

Keep a fallback path: an independent calculator or script for numerical work, a computer algebra system for symbolic checks, and a proof assistant for formal obligations. This reduces dependence on a model’s availability and makes failures recoverable.

A compact decision guide

If your priority is… Choose a workflow with… Reject an output when…
Fast numerical setup A reasoning model plus executable computation and a second calculation. Units, assumptions, or intermediate values are missing or inconsistent.
Exact symbolic transformation A model that preserves notation and conditions, followed by substitution and boundary tests. It cancels terms without stating nonzero conditions or changes branches silently.
Exploring a proof idea A model that offers lemmas and case structures, with a human proof audit. A step relies on “obvious” claims, an unproved equivalence, or an incomplete case split.
Certified correctness A proof assistant and a model used for tactic or lemma search. The proposed proof has not been compiled and accepted by the checker.

The best choice is therefore a verified workflow, not a model name. Use benchmark evidence to narrow candidates, test them on representative problems, and let the required assurance level determine where human review, computation, or formal checking enters.
