The right AI agent runtime security platform is the one that demonstrably reduces risk in your own agent workflows—not the one with the longest feature list. Start by inventorying every framework, tool and MCP server, identity, credential, memory source and consequential action. Convert that threat model into testable controls, use the vendor-neutral OWASP Artificial Intelligence Security Verification Standard (AISVS) 1.0 as a versioned baseline, and make shortlisted platforms prove enforcement and auditability in a buyer-run proof of concept (POC).

This method matters because agent risk extends far beyond prompt filtering. An agent can misuse a tool, inherit excessive privileges, leak data, accept poisoned memory, trigger an irreversible transaction or propagate an attack through other agents. Platform selection should therefore be an evidence exercise: define the risks, demand observable controls, test failure behavior and record residual risk before signing a contract.

What an AI agent runtime security platform must protect

An agent runtime is the execution layer that interprets a model’s reasoning, retrieves context, calls tools, reads and writes memory, and takes actions on behalf of a user or service. A security platform sits in or around that execution path to establish identity, enforce policy, observe behavior and stop or escalate unsafe operations while the agent is running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prompt filtering is only one control. The OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet identifies risks that include direct and indirect prompt injection, tool abuse, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, excessive autonomy, high-impact actions, cascading failures and supply-chain weaknesses. A platform that blocks suspicious text but cannot constrain a payment API or isolate poisoned memory leaves the most consequential paths exposed.

Use the following outcome as your definition of success: for every deployed agent, your team can identify who or what it is, see what it can access, trace what it did and why, and intervene at runtime. The OWASP GenAI Security Project’s Agent Control Standard states: “Agents must be inspectable, traceable and instrumentable—providing visibility into what they are, what they can access, what they did and why, and the ability to control their behavior at runtime.” (OWASP, September 1, 2026; Agent Control Standard.)

Start with an inventory of your agent system

Do not begin with a vendor feature matrix. Build a system map for each representative workflow, including components that a security product may not directly instrument. The inventory becomes the boundary for your threat model and POC.

Inventory area What to document Why it changes platform requirements
Frameworks and models Agent orchestration framework, model providers, model versions, prompts, planners, routers and multi-agent handoffs Determines available hooks, tracing methods, upgrade cadence and whether policy follows an agent across frameworks
Tools and MCP servers Every function, API, plugin, browser, database and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server; inputs, outputs and side effects Security must distinguish read from write operations, validate parameters and cover tool calls that bypass a central gateway
Identities and credentials Human initiator, service account, agent identity, delegated sub-agents, tokens, secrets, workload identity and credential rotation Shows whether least privilege can be enforced per actor, operation, resource and trust level
Memory and data sources Conversation memory, vector stores, files, retrieval indexes, data classifications, tenant boundaries and retention Reveals poisoning, cross-tenant access, sensitive-data movement and deletion requirements
Consequential actions Payments, production changes, messages, account changes, code deployment, regulated decisions and other irreversible or high-impact actions These paths usually require step-up authorization, human approval, transaction limits and stronger evidence
Runtime topology Cloud, data center, endpoint, SaaS, private network, gateways, sidecars, SDKs, queues and failover paths Defines where enforcement and telemetry can run and what happens when a control is unavailable

Record data flows and trust boundaries, not just component names. Note where untrusted content enters, where the agent can cross tenants, which tools can write state, and whether a sub-agent receives the parent’s credentials. Capture normal and emergency operating modes, because a platform that is secure in a synchronous request may fail open in a queue, retry worker or outage path.

Turn the threat model into testable requirements

Translate each material threat into an expected policy decision and observable evidence. “Uses least privilege” is not a requirement until you specify which identity may call which operation on which resource and what should happen when the request is outside that scope.

Threat or failure mode Requirement to test Evidence to demand
Direct or indirect prompt injection Separate instructions from retrieved or user-supplied content; prevent untrusted text from changing authorization Blocked, quarantined or escalated decision tied to the source, agent, session and policy version
Tool misuse and privilege escalation Allow only approved operations with parameter, resource and identity constraints Runtime deny and escalation tests using buyer-defined tools and identities, including attempts to alter parameters
Data exfiltration Classify sensitive data and restrict destinations, egress tools and cross-tenant movement Trace showing data policy evaluation, destination, redaction or block, and an incident-ready audit record
Memory poisoning Authenticate writers, validate provenance, scope memory by tenant and purpose, and support quarantine or rollback Attempted poisoned write, later retrieval and cleanup; evidence that untrusted memory cannot authorize an action
Excessive autonomy Limit action count, spend, duration, recursion and delegation; require approval for defined thresholds Budget exhaustion, timeout and approval scenarios with predictable stop behavior
High-impact action Require explicit authorization or human approval for irreversible operations Allow, deny and escalation paths, including replay protection and duplicate-request handling
Cascading or multi-agent failure Propagate identity and policy across handoffs; isolate agents and cap fan-out Trace linking parent and child agents and a test showing containment when one agent is compromised
Supply-chain compromise Verify framework, model, tool and MCP-server provenance; control versions and permissions Inventory, signature or approval evidence, change alerts and a regression result after component replacement

Least-privilege access and explicit authorization for sensitive operations should be acceptance tests, not statements in a proposal. Ask the platform to enforce your policies against your tools, identities and data classifications. Test both an obviously forbidden request and a near-boundary request that differs by one resource, field or operation.

Use OWASP AISVS 1.0 as the versioned baseline

OWASP AISVS 1.0 was released in June 2026 as vendor-neutral, testable guidance for AI-system security across the lifecycle. It contains 191 requirements in 12 chapters and three appendices. The verification levels contain 51 Level 1 requirements, 95 Level 2 requirements and 45 Level 3 requirements.

OWASP describes the levels as risk-based rather than as product tiers. Most production systems should aim for at least Level 2; a high-impact workflow may justify Level 3 controls. Select the level per system and document why a lower level is acceptable for a low-risk experiment. Requirement identifiers can change between versions, so record “AISVS 1.0” and the exact identifier in your test plan and contract exhibits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AISVS is intentionally narrow. It assumes that general application, infrastructure and supply-chain security are covered in parallel. A runtime platform therefore complements identity governance, secret management, network controls, secure software delivery, data-loss prevention, incident response and business continuity; it does not replace them.

Map each AISVS requirement that applies to your architecture to one of three states: enforced by the platform, enforced elsewhere with an integration, or residual risk accepted by the owner. Require a reproducible test and an evidence location for every “enforced” claim. This prevents a dashboard or a directory listing from being mistaken for independent assurance.

Compare platforms on evidence, not feature counts

The following axes cover the decisions that affect security and operating cost. Published material does not establish comparable per-vendor deployment coverage, latency, efficacy or pricing; verify those points against current documentation and your proposed architecture.

Coverage and deployment model

List every place the agent runs: development, batch workers, APIs, chat interfaces, browser sessions, endpoints, cloud services and on-premises networks. Ask which components require an SDK, middleware, gateway, sidecar, proxy or host agent, and whether the control still applies to asynchronous jobs and direct tool-to-tool calls. Confirm support for your orchestration frameworks, model providers, MCP implementation and private connectivity. A product that protects one gateway but misses a background worker creates an unmonitored bypass.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identity and authorization

Require distinct, cryptographically reliable identities for the human, session, agent, delegated agent and tool. Permissions should be scoped by operation, resource, tenant and trust level, with short-lived credentials and explicit delegation. Ask how policies handle impersonation, retries, parallel tool calls and a child agent that requests broader access than its parent. Sensitive operations should support approval, dual control or a transaction-specific token rather than a permanent exception.

Runtime enforcement

Demonstrate allow, deny and escalation decisions for tool calls, sensitive-data movement and high-impact actions. Test malformed inputs, alternate encodings, replayed requests, policy-server timeouts and attempts to call a tool through an uninstrumented path. Establish whether the architecture fails closed, fails open or queues work when the security service is unavailable; then decide whether that behavior is acceptable for each workflow.

Attack coverage

Build scenarios from your inventory: malicious retrieved documents, poisoned memory, tool parameter tampering, exfiltration to an approved-looking destination, excessive loops, unauthorized delegation and multi-agent propagation. Include benign requests that resemble attacks to measure false positives. A useful platform should expose the policy decision and the input features that led to it without leaking more sensitive data into its own telemetry.

Observability and evidence

Every trace should connect agent identity, user or workload, request and session, model or policy version, tool, parameters or classification, decision and outcome. Check whether records are immutable or tamper-evident, exportable to your security operations tooling, searchable during an incident and retained for the periods your regulators and contracts require. Ask what data the provider stores, where it is processed, who can access it and how deletion, tenant isolation and encryption work.

Testing and change control

Look for repeatable adversarial tests and regression suites that run when prompts, models, tools, MCP servers or policies change. The platform should support versioning, approvals, rollback and a comparison of expected versus actual decisions. Require a way to map each acceptance check to an AISVS 1.0 requirement and preserve the configuration, test data and result so a later auditor can reproduce it.

Operational fit

Measure added latency, throughput impact, availability dependencies and the effect of a blocked call on the user workflow. Evaluate policy administration, exception expiry, alert quality, on-call ownership, integration with your existing security information and event management and case-management systems, and the staff time needed to maintain rules. These operating costs often determine whether controls remain enabled after deployment.

Run a buyer-controlled proof of concept

A POC should answer whether the proposed architecture reduces your defined risks. It is not a scripted product tour and should not rely on vendor-supplied success cases alone.

  1. Choose a representative low-risk agent. Select a workflow with real tools and data shapes but reversible consequences. Include the framework, model, memory and deployment pattern planned for production.
  2. Document identity and allowed actions. Write the agent’s allowed operations, resources, data classes, spend or rate limits, delegation rules and approval thresholds. Establish expected decisions before testing.
  3. Create benign and adversarial scenarios. Cover normal requests, direct and indirect injection, malicious retrieval, memory contamination, parameter tampering, exfiltration, excessive autonomy, unauthorized delegation and a security-service outage.
  4. Instrument the complete path. Confirm that traces include the initiating identity, parent and child agents, tool, policy version, decision, outcome and relevant data classification. Test asynchronous queues and retries as well as the front door.
  5. Verify enforcement. Record allow, deny and escalation behavior, including near-boundary cases. Attempt bypasses through alternate tools, direct API calls, encoded inputs and unapproved credentials. Test whether controls fail open or closed under timeout and partial outage.
  6. Change a policy and repeat. Demonstrate review, approval, deployment, rollback and regression results. Change a prompt, model, tool or MCP server and confirm that the required tests run again.
  7. Repeat for the highest-impact workflow. Do not generalize from a chatbot to an agent that changes production or moves regulated data. Run the same evidence process against the workflow with the greatest business consequence.

Use a scorecard with an explicit pass condition for each requirement:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Record Example entry
Requirement and risk owner AISVS 1.0 identifier; engineering, security or compliance owner
Configuration and versions Platform release, policy revision, model, framework, tool and MCP-server versions
Scenario and expected result “Agent may read invoice record but may not change payment destination; approval required”
Observed result and evidence Decision, trace ID, exported audit record, alert and user-visible behavior
Failure behavior Result during timeout, malformed input, retry, queue replay and telemetry loss
Residual risk and disposition Uncovered path, compensating control, owner, deadline or documented acceptance

Have your own engineers operate the POC and retain the artifacts. A vendor directory is useful for discovery, but presence in the OWASP GenAI Security Solutions Directory is not certification, an independent benchmark or proof that a product meets your requirements.

Design defense in depth around the platform

Runtime policy is one layer in a larger control system. AWS guidance recommends combining established distributed-systems security with AI-specific mitigations across perception, reasoning and action, and selecting controls according to workload risk. Its explicit rule is: “For any threat identified, you should implement multiple controls across more than one security control type.” (James Schafer and Melanie Li, Amazon Web Services, Security for agentic AI on AWS.)

In practice, pair runtime controls with network segmentation, workload identity, secret isolation, API authorization, input and output validation, data classification, rate and spend limits, secure tool development, dependency provenance, backup and recovery, human approval and incident-response playbooks. Ensure that a compromised model cannot disable the monitor, mint a broader credential or erase its own evidence. Use independent controls at the tool and data layers so a missed runtime signal does not become an unrestricted action.

Budget and operating requirements

No broadly applicable independent pricing dataset or cross-vendor efficacy benchmark establishes a reliable “best value” choice. Request a complete cost model for your measured volumes rather than comparing license labels. Include events or traces retained, protected agents and tools, policy evaluations, data egress, private deployment, support, test environments and professional services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Estimate internal effort for policy authoring, framework upgrades, tool onboarding, alert triage, exception review, evidence retention and adversarial regression testing. Ask for capacity limits and the cost of burst traffic, because an agent may generate many tool calls per user request. Define service-level targets for decision latency and availability, and price the compensating controls required if the platform cannot meet them.

Common selection mistakes and how to correct them

  • Choosing a prompt firewall as the whole strategy. Add tool authorization, data-flow controls, memory provenance, action approval and supply-chain checks.
  • Trusting a product catalog or logo wall. Treat directories and vendor descriptions as discovery only; require buyer-run tests and exported evidence.
  • Testing only the happy path. Include bypass attempts, retries, malformed inputs, outages, asynchronous workers and multi-agent delegation.
  • Ignoring identity propagation. Verify that the same least-privilege policy follows a request from user to parent agent, child agent, tool and data store.
  • Accepting “fail open” without a decision. Classify workflows by consequence and explicitly approve outage behavior for each one.
  • Failing to version controls. Pin AISVS version and requirement IDs, platform and policy versions, and rerun tests after every material change.
  • Collecting unusable telemetry. Check trace completeness, retention, export, privacy, tamper resistance and incident-response search before deployment.
  • Extrapolating from a low-risk pilot. Repeat validation against the highest-impact workflow before procurement and record residual risk rather than assuming coverage.

Make the procurement decision

Advance a platform only when it passes non-negotiable gates: it covers every production execution path or has a documented compensating control; maps identities and permissions to your model; enforces least privilege and approval at the tool boundary; produces complete, exportable evidence; supports repeatable regression tests; and has acceptable outage, latency, privacy and operating characteristics.

Among platforms that pass those gates, select the one that leaves the smallest, best-understood residual risk for your highest-impact workflows at an operating effort your team can sustain. Keep the POC scorecard, architecture, policy versions and exceptions with the procurement record. Revalidate after model, framework, tool, MCP-server, identity or policy changes—not only at renewal.
