The right warehouse AGV is the one that fits the material movement, routes, people, fleet controls, and recovery process—not simply the vehicle with the highest advertised speed or the most flexible navigation. Compare the complete operating system: load interface, guidance and localization, safety functions, fleet management, charging, and the conditions in which it must work.
Start with the material movement, not the vehicle label
Define what must move, from where to where, and how the load is presented at each transfer point. A pallet moved between two fixed stations creates different demands from a load lifted into a rack, a train of carts towed along a route, or an unusual item that needs a custom carrier. Dematic’s application overview describes point-to-point transport, counterbalance pallet handling, reach vehicles for elevated storage and retrieval, very-narrow-aisle vehicles, and custom vehicles for unusual or oversized loads; these are useful examples, not a complete market taxonomy.
Before comparing quotations, document payload and load center, pallet or container dimensions, pickup and drop-off geometry, required lift height, towing needs, travel path, aisle width, and acceptable handoff tolerance. Also identify what happens if a load is skewed or a vehicle cannot align with its transfer point. Replacing a manual forklift task may require changes to load presentation, floor conditions, racks, crossings, or operating procedures.

| Movement requirement | Vehicle form to investigate | Questions for the design review |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated movement between fixed pickup and drop-off points | Point-to-point transport vehicle | How accurately must it dock, and how are blocked transfer points handled? |
| Pallet handling at floor level | Counterbalance pallet-handling vehicle | What are the rated load and load center, and does the pallet presentation match the vehicle? |
| Storage or retrieval at height | Reach vehicle | What lift height, rack clearances, and positioning tolerances are required? |
| Operation in very narrow aisles | Very-narrow-aisle vehicle | Does the aisle geometry and traffic plan support the proposed operating method? |
| Moving carts or a train of loads | Tugger or towing configuration | What is the total train load, turning envelope, and behavior at crossings? |
| Oversized or nonstandard loads | Custom vehicle or load interface | How will the load be secured, detected, and transferred consistently? |
The categories above reflect applications described by Dematic; the specific model’s ratings and limitations must be checked with its supplier.
#1 Best Overall
- DANGER – AUTONOMOUS ROBOTS OPERATING – Alerts employees and visitors that driverless robots may move without warning, reducing the risk of collisions in busy warehouse and manufacturing environments.
- CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS TO STAY BACK – “MAY MOVE WITHOUT WARNING – KEEP CLEAR OF WORK ZONE” makes expectations obvious and helps support your written SOPs and safety training.
- INDUSTRIAL-GRADE 8×12 IN .040 ALUMINUM – Rigid aluminum sign resists bending, rust, and fading so it can live on dock doors, aisle ends, robot charging zones, and control rooms.
- PRE-DRILLED FOR EASY INSTALLATION – Four mounting holes fit screws, bolts, or zip ties, giving you flexibility to mount on racks, guardrails, bollards, or walls.
- DESIGNED FOR MODERN ROBOTIC OPERATIONS – Ideal for warehouses using AMRs/AGVs, manufacturing cells with cobots, and logistics hubs where people and robots share space.
Compare guidance by its effect on routes and localization
Warehouse guidance options include laser, magnetic, wire, camera, and natural-target navigation, among others. The useful comparison is not a simple “old AGV versus modern AMR” distinction. Ask what references the selected system uses to locate itself, what infrastructure must be installed or maintained, how a route change is made, and how accurately it can reach a pickup or drop-off point.
| Approach or capability | What to establish for your site |
|---|---|
| Guide-based navigation, such as floor magnets or beacons | Where guides must be installed, how they affect route changes, and who maintains them. |
| Mapped, infrastructure-free navigation | How the map is created and updated, how changing floor conditions affect localization, and how the vehicle handles an altered environment. |
| Camera, laser, wire, or natural-target options | Which references and environmental conditions the selected model depends on, and what happens when those references are unavailable. |
| Infrastructure-assisted positioning at transfer points | Whether added references improve docking accuracy and what installation or upkeep they require. |
OMRON’s vendor comparison contrasts mapped navigation without installed guides with AGVs following guides such as floor magnets or beacons. Its operating manual also describes selectable capabilities including overhead-light localization for changing floor environments and magnetic-tape positioning for high-accuracy pickup and drop-off. These examples show why fleets can combine flexible navigation with infrastructure-assisted precision; they do not establish that every AGV or AMR behaves the same way. Review the OMRON navigation comparison and OMRON Fleet Operations Workspace Core manual as vendor-specific descriptions, then confirm the capabilities of the proposed model.
Compare route-change frequency, installation disruption, floor upkeep, localization references, docking accuracy, and the process for commissioning a changed route. Do not assume that all AGVs stop indefinitely at an obstruction or that all AMRs automatically reroute; verify the selected vehicle’s behavior in its intended operating modes.

Assess safety as a property of the vehicle and its operating zone
ISO 3691-4:2023, Edition 2, was published in June 2023. It specifies safety requirements and verification for driverless industrial trucks and their systems, including AGVs and AMRs. ISO says the operating zone has a significant effect on safe operation and addresses hazards over the truck lifecycle. Its public page also identifies exclusions and limits, including trucks solely guided mechanically or remotely controlled, power-source requirements, and certain special environments and applications. The abstract is not a complete project compliance checklist: consult the full standard and applicable local requirements.
ISO currently lists ISO/DIS 3691-4 as a draft in the enquiry phase that is intended to replace the 2023 edition. The draft preview includes topics such as movement-stop and holding functions, safeguarding, operating modes, communication loss, and verification. Those are draft topics, not requirements to attribute to the currently published edition. Check the published ISO 3691-4:2023 page, the ISO draft listing, and the draft preview for status and scope.
For the proposed installation, assess pedestrian and vehicle crossings, blind corners, doors, narrow aisles, load geometry, speeds and stopping behavior, protective sensing, emergency stops, warnings, manual and maintenance modes, and communications. Dematic describes features such as safety-rated laser scanners with warning and protective fields, speed reduction, stopping, emergency-stop buttons, and visual or audible warnings. These are vendor-described features, not independent proof that a vehicle or site installation meets a legal or standards obligation. Ask for the exact vehicle’s safety-function documentation, field configuration, validation records, and the project’s risk assessment.

Make fault recovery observable and testable
A vehicle described as autonomous can still stop and require human action. Specify the recovery workflow: what operators see when it stops, how they identify the cause, who may clear an obstruction, how maintenance is called, how a vehicle that has lost localization is found, and what must happen before it returns to service. Include what happens to other vehicles and transport orders while a route or vehicle is unavailable.
OMRON’s manual describes a touchscreen for checking status, sending goals, pausing and releasing vehicles, and localizing a lost AMR. It also describes an operator pendant and selectable localization or positioning options. These are useful demonstration prompts, not guarantees that every model or configuration has the same controls. In a site trial, have warehouse operators perform realistic recovery tasks and record the steps, permissions, time, and impact on nearby traffic.
Before selection, request a demonstration of representative faults and agree on measurable acceptance criteria: time to diagnose, time to restore service, how alerts and event logs are accessed, and whether a single stopped unit blocks a critical aisle or transfer point. Confirm service coverage, spare-parts arrangements, and ownership of recovery responsibilities in the operating plan.

Evaluate fleet control, integration, and charging together
Fleet-level capacity depends on dispatch and traffic management as well as individual vehicle performance. Dematic describes software that assigns transport orders, selects routes, tracks vehicles, and manages traffic. OMRON Digital describes a warehouse control system (WCS) that coordinates vehicles from different manufacturers and can receive transport instructions from an external system. Treat these as descriptions of supplier offerings, not proof that a particular mixed fleet or interface will work at your site.
For each proposed integration, ask for the supported interface list, how instructions and acknowledgments flow, who owns master data, how exceptions are handled, and which mixed-fleet use cases have been validated. Establish which system is responsible for order priorities, traffic decisions, and operator alerts when a transfer fails. OMRON Digital’s WCS description and Dematic’s AGV software and battery systems brochure describe vendor approaches; project interfaces still need to be confirmed.
Charging strategy should match shift patterns and local constraints. Dematic lists manual battery exchange, automatic exchange, and automatic opportunity recharging. Compare the charging window and location, labor for battery handling, number and placement of chargers or exchange stations, fleet redundancy, and the effect of an unavailable charging point. The evidence does not establish one universally best method.

Use a site-specific comparison and acceptance test
Put competing designs against the same operating scenario rather than comparing headline vehicle specifications in isolation. A practical evaluation should include:
- Payload, load center, load interface, lift or tow geometry, and transfer tolerance.
- Aisle, floor, doorway, crossing, and route constraints, including anticipated layout changes.
- Guidance infrastructure, localization references, docking accuracy, and obstruction response.
- Safety functions and documentation for the exact vehicle, configuration, and operating zone.
- Dispatch, traffic management, external-system interfaces, and mixed-fleet behavior.
- Fault diagnosis, relocalization, operator permissions, service response, and route availability during recovery.
- Charging arrangements, shift availability, implementation work, support, and lifecycle cost.
Run a pilot or acceptance test where throughput, recovery, docking accuracy, or capacity depends on facility conditions. Record site measurements separately from supplier claims. OMRON reports cycle-time improvement of “up to 15%” for actual fleets in its brochure; this is a vendor-reported maximum, not an independent benchmark or an expected result for every application, and the retrieved brochure text does not establish a publication year. Do not use it as a substitute for measuring the proposed workflow.
No cross-design independent benchmark for AGV safety, recovery time, throughput, or total cost is established by the cited material. Compare the shortlisted configurations under your operating conditions and require project-specific evidence for the claims that determine the investment.
