Choose training that lets you practise AI on tasks you actually do at work, gives you feedback, and teaches you to check outputs and manage risks. Most workers need general AI literacy—using AI effectively, spotting its limitations, and applying sound judgment—not a course on building AI models. Choose technical training when your role involves developing or maintaining AI systems.

Do you need AI literacy or technical training?

Start with the work you want to do better, not with the most advanced-sounding course. AI can change the tasks and skills within an occupation, and useful capabilities may include interacting with AI, digital and data skills, and complementary abilities such as critical thinking and communication.

For most people using AI as part of their existing job, general AI literacy is the more relevant starting point. OECD describes it in terms of effective interaction with AI, awareness of risks, and critical evaluation of outputs. Specialist training is a better fit if you are expected to develop, configure, or maintain AI systems.

The scale of that distinction matters: an OECD analysis reported that one in three job vacancies had high AI exposure, while about 1% required complex AI skills. Those are estimates presented in the OECD’s 2025 analysis, not a claim that every exposed worker needs technical training.

How can you tell whether a course teaches useful workplace skills?

Look for evidence that learners do more than watch demonstrations or collect a completion badge. A useful course connects its lessons to specific tasks, gives learners realistic practice, and helps them assess whether they can perform the skills independently.

  • Role and task fit: The provider names the roles or work tasks the course is designed for. Check whether those match your responsibilities.
  • Appropriate skill level: The syllabus makes clear whether it covers everyday AI use and evaluation, specialist technical work, or both.
  • Realistic practice: Learners complete projects or exercises resembling actual work, rather than only following a provider’s demonstration.
  • Feedback and assessment: Learners receive useful feedback or demonstrate a skill. Attendance alone does not show that someone can apply it.
  • Critical evaluation: The course teaches learners to test outputs, recognize limitations, and verify information instead of treating AI responses as authoritative.
  • Responsible use: The training addresses risks and human judgment, including privacy and accountability where relevant.
  • Practical access: The schedule, format, support, and required tools fit your circumstances and your employer’s rules.

How should you compare two or more AI courses?

Use the same questions for each course and compare what the syllabus and assessment actually show. This is a practical selection framework, not a universal course-rating scale.

Comparison area What to look for
Role and task relevance Does the syllabus connect to work you perform or expect to perform?
Skill level Does it teach general AI literacy, specialist model-building, or a clearly described combination?
Practice and transfer Do learners complete realistic projects or job-like exercises?
Feedback and assessment Is there feedback or a way to demonstrate skill beyond watching lessons?
Critical use and safeguards Does it cover output evaluation, limitations, risks, privacy, and responsible use?
Access and support Do the format, schedule, and support fit your needs and workplace context?

What does the evidence say about AI training?

AI-related course content is not equally visible across training catalogues. In a 2025 text-matching analysis of course catalogues covering formal and non-formal education and training, the OECD found AI-related material in 0.3% to 5.5% of analysed courses across Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the United States. This range describes those catalogues and countries, not the current global share of all AI training. The OECD cautions that informal and workplace learning may be missed.

Workplace training is common among AI users, but survey findings should not be mistaken for proof that a particular course causes better results. An OECD 2026 brief summarizing survey evidence says more than half of workers using AI reported employer-funded training. Workers who received training were also more likely to report positive outcomes, including better job performance and working conditions. These are reported associations, not a guarantee of what an individual course will achieve.

How do you check whether a course is safe and workable for your job?

Before using AI in a course exercise, check your organization’s current policy. Do not enter workplace or sensitive information into an AI tool unless your employer permits it. Rules can differ by tool, data type, and task; general training guidance cannot establish which systems your organization approves.

Look for teaching that leaves people responsible for reviewing AI-assisted work. OECD guidance highlights workplace issues including privacy, safety, transparency, explainability, and accountability. UNESCO also recommends pairing technical skills with transferable capabilities such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, empathy, and learning how to learn; its recommendation supports project-based AI learning.

What should a course certificate tell you?

A certificate can document participation or completion, but by itself it does not establish job readiness. Check what learners had to produce, how their work was assessed, and whether they received feedback. A concrete work-like project and demonstrated ability to evaluate outputs are more informative selection signals than a broad promise of “AI skills.”

There is no single delivery format or credential established as best for every learner. Choose based on the task you need to handle, the practice and feedback the course provides, and whether you can apply its methods within your workplace’s rules.
