If you mean the wide image at the top of a YouTube channel, the correct term is channel banner. Start with a 2560 × 1440 pixel canvas (16:9), keep essential text and logos in the central safe area, and export the file at 6 MB or less. YouTube displays the same banner on computers, phones, and TVs but crops it differently on each device.
“Channel thumbnail” can also mean a profile picture or an individual video thumbnail. Those are separate assets with different dimensions, so choosing the right specification first prevents blurry images, clipped logos, and rejected uploads.
Choose the right YouTube image before resizing
YouTube’s branding guidance calls the wide channel image a banner image: “a larger space for you to show what your channel is about.” A video thumbnail is the preview image for one video, while a profile picture identifies the channel with a small square or circular image.

The best channel banner size
Use 2560 × 1440 pixels for a new design
Create the banner at YouTube’s recommended 2560 × 1440 px resolution. It is 16:9, gives you room for high-density displays, and lets you design a full background that can survive different crops. A 2048 × 1152 px file is the minimum upload size, not a competing recommendation.
Understand the 1235 × 338 pixel safe area
At the minimum banner dimensions, YouTube specifies a central 1235 × 338 px safe area for text and logos. To make a design robust at any supported size, place your channel name, logo, URL, release schedule, and other must-see information in the central horizontal band. Let decorative backgrounds, photographs, and patterns extend beyond it.
The safe-area numbers are stated for the minimum-size banner. If you work at 2560 × 1440, scale the guide proportionally in your editor, then keep an additional visual margin rather than placing lettering directly on the boundary. Preview the result on a wide monitor, a narrow phone layout, and a TV-sized view before publishing.

- Put one clear identity element—usually the channel name or logo—near the center.
- Keep faces, product shots, and calls to action away from the outer edges.
- Use large, high-contrast type; text that looks comfortable on a 2560-pixel canvas may be unreadable after a mobile crop.
- Do not assume the entire background will be visible everywhere. The same uploaded image is adapted for computer, mobile, and TV displays.
File-size and export checks
- Set the document to 2560 × 1440 pixels and RGB color mode in your image editor.
- Add a centered guide representing the safe region. If you begin with the 2048 × 1152 minimum canvas, the guide is 1235 × 338 pixels; scale that guide when working at 2560 × 1440.
- Place all essential text and logos inside the guide. Keep nonessential decoration outside it.
- Export a sharp JPG or PNG and check the resulting file size. YouTube’s cited banner instructions set a 6 MB maximum.
- Open the exported file at 100% zoom and inspect small lettering, thin lines, and transparent-looking edges before uploading.
YouTube says image-editing software or an online resizer can resize artwork; no particular application is required. Resizing a small, blurry source up to 2560 × 1440 will not restore lost detail, so start with the largest clean source available.
How to upload and verify a banner
- Sign in to YouTube and open your channel.
- Choose Customize channel, then open the Branding tab in YouTube Studio.
- In the banner-image section, choose Upload and select the 2560 × 1440 file.
- Use YouTube’s preview to inspect computer, mobile, and TV crops. Reposition or edit the artwork if required information is clipped.
- Publish or save the branding changes, then view the public channel while signed out or in a private browser window.
Interface labels can move as YouTube Studio changes. If your account shows different navigation, use the channel customization area and look for the Branding or banner-image control.
If you meant a video thumbnail instead
Long-form videos
Use a 16:9 design, with YouTube’s recommendation of 3840 × 2160 px and a minimum width of 640 px. The cited guidance names JPG and PNG. Upload limits differ by device: it lists 2 MB for mobile video thumbnails and 50 MB for desktop. Confirm the limit shown by your current upload interface rather than assuming every account has the same allowance.

For a Shorts asset, start at 2160 × 3840 px (9:16), with a minimum height of 640 px. A custom 16:9 thumbnail may be replaced by an automatic 4:5 image on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. This is why a landscape thumbnail can appear correctly in one location but not another.

Design a separate square or round profile image. YouTube’s branding guidance says it renders at 98 × 98 pixels and accepts JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG, except animated GIFs; the maximum file size cited is 15 MB. A profile picture’s format and limit do not automatically apply to the banner.

“My banner is the right size but the text is cut off”
The 2560 × 1440 canvas does not guarantee that every pixel is shown on every device. Move essential elements into the central safe area and use YouTube’s multi-device preview.

“The upload is rejected”
Check that the banner is at least 2048 × 1152 px and no larger than 6 MB. Re-export with sensible JPG compression or reduce unnecessary metadata. Do not use the 15 MB profile-picture limit as a banner limit.
“The banner looks soft”
Use a larger, original source and export at 2560 × 1440 rather than enlarging a compressed web image. Inspect the actual exported file, not only the editor’s preview.
“I used my video-thumbnail template for the channel”
Rebuild it as a 16:9 channel banner. Video thumbnails, Shorts artwork, profile pictures, and podcast playlist images serve different surfaces and should not share one template.

This can be expected behavior: YouTube may substitute an auto-generated 4:5 image for a 16:9 Shorts custom thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages.
