Choose a youth goalie mask by verifying the exact helmet-and-cage configuration against the current certification listing and the child’s league rules, then fit it on the child. A certification listing is an important product check, but it cannot tell you whether a mask fits your goalie or guarantee that an injury will not happen.
Start with the goalie, not the size label
Bring the child to try on the mask. The CDC recommends measuring around the head just above the eyebrows and ears, with the tape level, and following the manufacturer’s sizing directions. Age and a printed size alone do not establish fit.
With the mask on, check that its padding contacts the head and face as intended and feels stable, without excessive pressure. The face pads should be snug, not too tight. Check the maker’s adjustment instructions and try the fit with any equipment the goalie will wear beneath or alongside the mask.

Check the cage, chin cup, and coverage
The CDC’s hockey goalie helmet guide says the cage or facemask should be no more than one inch from the face. The chin cup should sit centered beneath the chin and feel snug. A cage may be a different size from the helmet, so check the combination on the child rather than assuming that a helmet size guarantees the right cage fit.

Inspect face coverage and make sure the mask remains properly positioned when the goalie moves. Do not treat a single measurement as a substitute for a stable, comfortable fit.
Verify the exact model and current certification
Search the current HECC certified equipment listing for the specific goalie headgear model, size, and mask-and-cage configuration. The list contains product-specific entries, including youth and junior examples; a brand name or product family by itself does not establish that every configuration is certified.

Certification is also ruleset-dependent. HECC says players in USA Hockey-sanctioned events through age 21, and players in high-school events using Federation rules, must wear certified goalie headgear and facemask. Requirements can differ by league, age division, and location, so confirm the current rule with the child’s governing body before buying or using equipment.

Inspect certification status and condition, especially for used gear
Check the certification sticker and the mask’s condition. USA Hockey’s 2025–2029 guidance says an expired HECC helmet certification is no longer current. A used mask also needs a careful condition check; a valid sticker does not establish that a particular item is undamaged or correctly fitted. The cited guidance does not evaluate individual used products.

Choose neck protection that covers the throat
The CDC says a throat protector or neck guard should fit snugly and completely cover the throat. Try it with the rest of the gear and check coverage while the goalie moves, so it does not leave a gap. Follow the product maker’s fitting directions and the league’s rule.
HECC operates a neck laceration protector certification program and lists certified products. Check the exact item and whether the child’s rules require a particular certification; CDC fit guidance is not certification of an individual product.

Understand what certification testing does—and does not—show
HECC describes testing goalie mask combinations for coverage area and field of vision, using a simulated stick blade to check whether it can contact the face through openings, and firing a puck at the mask at 80 mph to assess cage breakage. The helmet portion is tested for chin-strap strength and elongation and impact absorption. The 80 mph figure is a test condition, not a recommended playing speed or a promise of protection.

Check the rest of the goalie’s protective setup
A goalie mask is only one part of the equipment check. The CDC identifies these goalie-specific items:
- Catching glove and stick glove
- Chest and stomach protector
- Goalie skates
- Leg pads
- Shoulder and arm protectors
Other rulesets may specify additional protection. USA Hockey equipment guidance mentions shin, shoulder, and elbow pads; hip pads or padded hockey pants; and a protective cup, alongside gloves and head protection. The NFHS 2024–25 goalkeeper summary includes a neck laceration protector, flapper-style throat protector, padded pants or hip pads, cup or pelvic protector, chest and arm protector, and a full face mask and helmet with chin strap, among other equipment. These lists reflect different rulesets and dates, not one universal checklist. Use the current rules for the child’s league, age group, and competition to determine what is required.
A practical buying checklist
- Bring the goalie. Measure around the head just above the eyebrows and ears with a level tape, then use the manufacturer’s sizing directions and an in-person try-on.
- Check fit on the child. Confirm stable positioning, snug face pads, cage clearance of no more than one inch from the face, and a centered, snug chin cup.
- Verify the exact configuration. Match the model, size, and mask/cage combination to the current HECC listing; do not infer certification from the brand alone.
- Confirm the rules. Ask the child’s league or governing body about accepted certifications and required neck and throat protection for the current season.
- Inspect the item. Check the certification sticker and the equipment’s condition, particularly when considering used gear.
- Fit neck protection and the rest of the kit. Make sure throat coverage remains complete during movement, then check the full protective setup against the applicable rules.
Official sources do not establish comparative rankings for current masks by price, durability, weight, or performance. Base the choice on verified certification, applicable rules, condition, and the child’s actual fit.
