Choose the class and role or playstyle you want first, then pick from the races currently eligible for that class. From there, compare faction access, character fantasy, unlock effort, and racial traits that matter to the activities you actually play. There is no universally best race for every class or player.
1. Decide on your class and role first
If you already know the class you want, keep it fixed and use race eligibility as your first filter. If you are still choosing a class, start with the role and gameplay loop you enjoy—such as dealing damage, healing, or tanking—rather than trying to optimize a race before you know what you want to play.
Race and class are not an unrestricted pairing. Blizzard’s official playable-races page organizes races by faction, while its class combinations have changed over time. The available sources do not establish a universal best class or race for a particular role.

2. Check that the race can currently play your class
Use the live character-creation screen to confirm the exact race-and-class combination and any unlock conditions before committing to a character plan. Blizzard’s published class matrix is useful historical context, not a guarantee of the current lineup.

- Open character creation in the current game client.
- Select the class you want and inspect the available races, or select a race and inspect its available classes.
- If a race is locked, hover over its icon or follow the on-screen prompt to see the current requirement.
- Confirm that you can meet the requirement before spending time planning around that character.
Blizzard’s October 25, 2022 announcement, “Play as a Mage, Priest, or Rogue of Any Race,” made those three classes available to all playable races at that time, while noting that Allied Race unlock requirements still applied. Its table is dated and should not be treated as a live matrix.
Unlock rules have changed since then. Blizzard’s July 2023 Dragonflight: Fractures in Time update notes documented Warlock access for additional races and a change to Allied Race unlocking. The level requirement described in those notes was specific to that update; check the client rather than assuming it remains current.

3. Filter by faction, then choose the character you want
If you have a faction preference, use it to narrow the eligible options. Blizzard’s race overview groups standard playable races under Alliance and Horde and presents Allied Races separately. It also says that listed Allied Races must be recruited in-game before they can be played.
If faction is not a deciding factor for you, compare appearance, customization, story, and how much you enjoy the race’s identity. These are personal criteria rather than performance measurements: the official sources do not establish that one race is the right choice for every player.

4. Weigh racial traits against your actual activities
Traits can serve different purposes, so consider them in the context of what you play rather than treating a list of abilities as a universal ranking. Blizzard’s 2024 Earthen announcement illustrates the range: it describes traits involving combat, gathering, armor, food benefits, and exploration experience.
For example, gathering utility may matter more to a player who spends time collecting materials, while an exploration-related benefit may appeal to someone focused on discovering the world. Those examples do not show that Earthen—or any race—is best for a particular class or activity. Verify current trait details in the game and assess whether they fit the way you play.

5. Make the choice using the factors that matter to you
Once you have a shortlist of eligible races, compare it in this order—or rearrange the factors according to your priorities:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Eligibility: Can this race play the class you want in the current client?
- Unlock effort: Is the race available now, or are you willing to complete its current unlock requirements?
- Faction: Does it fit the faction you want to play with?
- Character identity: Do you like its appearance, customization, story, and overall fantasy?
- Trait relevance: Does a verified current trait support activities you actually enjoy?
If you are flexible about class, settle on the class and role before using this checklist. If your class is fixed, begin with eligibility and then choose among the remaining races based on the character you want to spend time playing.
