Choose a Windows 11 laptop by matching its exact configuration to the apps and work you do—not by treating Windows 11’s minimum requirements or a processor’s brand name as a performance promise. Start with your software, then compare memory, storage, graphics, screen, weight, ports, battery test results, and compatibility. Copilot+ PCs have separate hardware requirements for specific on-device features.
Start with the work you need the laptop to do
Write down the applications and tasks that matter: everyday browsing and documents, video calls, photo or video editing, specialist school or business software, gaming, or work with large local files. Note whether you routinely keep many browser tabs open, carry the laptop every day, or connect external monitors and other equipment.
Check the software maker’s requirements for demanding or specialist applications before choosing hardware. A laptop can meet Windows 11’s system requirements and still be a poor fit for an application that needs more memory, a particular graphics processor, a supported driver, or a specific processor architecture.

Microsoft’s published Windows 11 requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor with at least 1 GHz and two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics, and an HD 720p display larger than 9 inches. For Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro, internet access and a Microsoft account are required during initial setup. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Those figures are compatibility floors, not recommended targets for every workload. They do not guarantee that a particular application will run well, or that the laptop will feel responsive with your usual workload. Use the requirements to rule out incompatible devices, then choose components based on your software and daily use.
Choose processor and graphics for your applications
Compare the exact processor and graphics configuration, and look for credible tests of that specific laptop when performance matters. Microsoft’s buying guide names Core i5/i7 and Ryzen 5/7 classes as examples of mid-level options for performance and speed; those labels alone do not establish how a particular laptop performs. The chip generation, cooling, power configuration, and graphics hardware all matter.

For everyday work
For browsing, documents, streaming, and video calls, prioritize a configuration that meets the requirements of your applications and leaves enough memory for your normal multitasking. You may not benefit from paying for gaming-focused graphics if you do not use graphics-intensive software or games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Photo and video editing, 3D work, and games can make graphics capability more important. Microsoft notes that some graphics-intensive work and games may call for discrete graphics, including options such as NVIDIA GeForce RTX, AMD Radeon RX, or Intel Arc. The right choice depends on the specific software or game, so check its requirements rather than assuming a GPU family guarantees a particular experience.

Set memory and storage targets around your workload
RAM affects how well a laptop handles running applications and multitasking. Microsoft says 8 GB can be suitable for light browsing and many tasks, while some photo or video editing may call for closer to 16 GB. Its gaming-oriented guidance spans 16–64 GB depending on need. These are workload-based recommendations, not a guarantee that every app will run smoothly at a given capacity. Microsoft explains memory in its PC and laptop buying guide.
Choose storage based on the size of your apps and the files you keep locally. Microsoft’s gaming guidance points to 512 GB–2 TB or more for large game files and other media; its AI-focused guidance lists 16 GB or more of RAM and 256 GB to 1 TB or more of storage. Check whether RAM and storage are upgradeable on the exact model: product families can offer different configurations, and upgrade options are not established for every laptop.

Decide whether you need a Copilot+ PC
Copilot+ is a distinct hardware category, not a label that applies to every Windows 11 laptop or every PC marketed as an AI PC. Microsoft lists these minimums for Copilot+ PCs: a compatible processor or system-on-a-chip with an NPU capable of 40+ TOPS, 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage. The currently listed compatible processor families include AMD Ryzen AI 300/400, Intel Core Ultra 200V/300V, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X. Check Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications for the current list, because supported hardware and feature requirements can change.

Compare the screen, portability, battery, and ports
Screen
Choose a display size and resolution that suit your work and how you use the laptop. Microsoft discusses FHD, QHD, and 4K for gaming and AI-related use, but that does not mean every buyer needs a higher-resolution screen. Consider the balance between comfortable workspace, portability, and the work you actually do.
Weight and battery
Check the listed weight against how often you will carry the laptop. For battery life, prefer reviews that explain their test conditions and reflect a mixed-use day similar to yours. An advertised “up to” figure may come from controlled conditions; it is not a guarantee of a full workday.
Ports and connections
Check the exact port list against the devices you plan to connect, such as monitors, storage, and peripherals. If a selected laptop lacks ports you need, a USB-C hub may help, but it is an optional workaround rather than a necessary laptop purchase.
Check the exact listing and Windows compatibility before buying
- Confirm the model and configuration. Match the model number and listing details to the processor, graphics, RAM, storage, and display you intend to buy; configurations within one product family can differ materially.
- Verify Windows edition and setup needs. Check the listing for the Windows edition included. Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup.
- Check specialist apps and peripherals. If an essential application, driver, or device is old or specialized, confirm current support with its software or hardware maker before choosing.
- Check Arm compatibility where relevant. Browser, office, video-call, and media workflows may work well on Arm-based laptops, but not every program or peripheral is supported. Verify any essential older or specialist software and devices with their makers.
For a useful side-by-side comparison, record the exact processor and graphics, RAM and upgradeability, SSD capacity and upgradeability, display size and resolution, weight, battery results under comparable tests, ports, Windows edition and app compatibility, and the total price for the exact configuration. Current prices and model-specific test results need to be checked against the listings and reviews available when you buy.
