Choose a home Wi-Fi router by matching its wired ports to your internet service and wired equipment, its Wi-Fi features to the devices you actually own, and its coverage to your home’s layout. A single well-placed router may be enough; consider mesh when distance or obstacles leave persistent dead zones. Finally, check the manufacturer’s firmware-support information and set up the network securely.

1. Match the router’s ports to your internet plan and wired devices

Start with the connection that enters your home. Check the router’s WAN port—the port connecting to your modem or internet service—and its LAN ports, which connect local wired devices. Their speeds should accommodate the service and equipment you plan to connect. If you use a wired NAS or have a faster internet plan, 10G Ethernet may be relevant, according to ASUS’s Wi-Fi 7 guidance. That is a specification to compare, not a universal speed requirement or a guarantee of wireless performance.

Also check how many LAN ports the router has if you intend to connect computers, consoles, televisions, or other equipment by cable. Wired connections can be useful for devices that stay in one place, but the right port count and speed depend on your own equipment.

2. Choose Wi-Fi bands and features for your devices

A router’s advertised capabilities matter only if your devices can use them and the signal reaches them. ASUS describes the bands this way in its frequency-band guidance:

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • 2.4 GHz: generally reaches farther, but is slower and more vulnerable to interference.
  • 5 GHz: offers a middle ground of range and speed, and is generally faster than 2.4 GHz at suitable distances.
  • 6 GHz: provides additional, cleaner spectrum and high theoretical speeds, but has weaker wall penetration. A device needs 6 GHz support to connect on this band.

Actual performance varies with signal strength, interference, channel width, the router and client specifications, and placement. Band availability also depends on local rules and the specific model, so check its regional specifications rather than assuming every Wi-Fi 7 router has 6 GHz.

Check client compatibility before paying for new features

A newer router can serve older clients, but those clients do not gain features their own hardware does not support. ASUS says Wi-Fi 7 routers support traditional 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connections; 6 GHz requires a compatible client. Its compatibility guidance also notes that some older devices may have trouble with Wi-Fi 7 or newer encryption settings. Possible mitigations include changing settings or using a separate IoT network, depending on the router and device.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Before buying, make a short list of the devices that matter most—such as laptops, phones, consoles, smart-home equipment, and wired storage—and check their Wi-Fi capabilities. A router’s aggregate advertised rate is not the speed one device will necessarily receive, and Wi-Fi 7 will not automatically improve every household connection.

3. Decide between one router and a mesh system

For a home that one well-placed access point can serve, a single router is simpler. Mesh uses multiple access points to extend coverage and can help in a larger home or one with an awkward layout. It is not automatically better: node placement, walls, and the connection between nodes all affect results.

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Choose the backhaul that fits your home

Mesh nodes communicate with one another over a backhaul. A wired Ethernet backhaul is an option if running cable is practical; wireless backhaul avoids that cabling. ASUS cautions that adding more nodes is not always beneficial. Its mesh guidance also says its mesh systems require a separate ISP modem, so verify what equipment your internet service requires before choosing a system: ASUS mesh guidance.

Coverage figures are manufacturer claims, not guarantees for every floor plan. For example, ASUS lists coverage of up to 5,800 sq. ft. for the ZenWiFi BT6 two-pack on its product page. Treat that as a product specification; actual coverage depends on the home and setup, and the page is not an independent test.

  • WAN and LAN port speeds, plus the number of LAN ports, for your internet service and wired devices.
  • Supported Wi-Fi bands and features against the capabilities of your clients.
  • One router versus mesh, based on where coverage gaps occur.
  • Wired or wireless backhaul if you choose mesh.
  • Available security controls and how the manufacturer provides software updates.

For gaming, ASUS recommends looking for QoS features; for large homes, it recommends mesh; and for families or offices, it points to broad coverage, multiple ports, and throughput. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent rankings or proof that a particular model will perform best for your household. See ASUS’s Wi-Fi 7 guidance and mesh guidance for its advice.

5. Check update support and secure the network

Software support and security controls belong in the buying decision as well as setup. The Federal Trade Commission’s U.S. consumer guidance, published in December 2022, recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption, unique administrator credentials, current router software, and a guest network. It advises considering whether to turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP because those features can weaken security. Whether disabling them is practical depends on your needs and devices. Read the FTC’s home Wi-Fi security guidance for details.

Before purchase, look for clear manufacturer information about firmware updates and supported models. After setup, replace default administrator credentials, choose WPA3 Personal when your devices support it (or WPA2 Personal), keep router software current, and use a guest network for visitors when available.
