To choose a router for a fast internet plan and a large home, first make sure its WAN and LAN ports can handle your plan, then decide whether one router can cover your layout or you need a mesh system. Check node placement, wired-backhaul support, and whether your devices support the router’s Wi-Fi generation and bands. A router’s advertised combined Wi-Fi rate is not a promise of that speed to one device.

1. Check the wired connection before comparing Wi-Fi speeds

Your internet connection reaches the router through a wired link from a modem or optical network terminal (ONT). The router’s WAN port, the modem or ONT, and any LAN port used by a wired device can each limit throughput. Compare the speed and type of every relevant port with your internet plan, especially if the plan exceeds 1 Gbps.

  • WAN port: Check that it can accept the speed delivered by your modem or ONT.
  • LAN ports: Check the port speed for computers, switches, or other wired equipment that should receive the plan’s full speed.
  • Modem or ONT: Confirm that its Ethernet connection and service configuration support the plan.

For example, Google lists two Ethernet ports supporting 1 Gbps wired speeds per Nest Wifi Pro router. That is a relevant limit to consider for a plan above 1 Gbps, regardless of its wireless specifications. See Google’s Nest Wifi Pro specifications.

2. Decide between one router and mesh based on the home’s layout

Square footage alone cannot determine whether a single router will work. Floors, walls, building materials, router placement, and nearby Wi-Fi congestion all affect coverage. A mesh system uses multiple units to extend coverage; it is often worth comparing for a multistory or difficult-to-cover home, but the units must be positioned where they can maintain a useful connection to one another.

Use coverage estimates as planning guides, not guarantees

Google estimates that Nest Wifi Pro covers up to 200 square metres with one router, 400 with two, 600 with three, and 800 with four in the US. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed coverage areas; Google notes that results depend on home size, construction, and neighbourhood congestion. See Google’s coverage and specification guidance.

When planning nodes, Google recommends placing points roughly two to three rooms apart and putting an additional point partway toward a weak area—not directly in the dead zone. A node needs a good connection to the rest of the mesh to relay coverage effectively. Google’s setup guidance also says: “For the strongest signal, place your router at eye level in plain view, like on a shelf or TV stand.” See Set up Nest Wifi Pro or Nest Wifi.

Check what the system can expand with

Do not assume units from different generations work together in one mesh. Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in a mesh with older Nest Wifi or Google Wifi devices. Check compatibility for the exact model and generation before buying extra points.

3. Choose wired or wireless backhaul

Backhaul is the connection between mesh nodes. Wireless backhaul avoids running Ethernet, while Ethernet backhaul can provide a wired link between compatible nodes. If your home already has Ethernet runs, check whether the system supports using them and whether its nodes have Ethernet ports. A model can offer mesh coverage without allowing every node to be hardwired.

Google documents Ethernet connections for compatible Nest Wifi Pro and Google Wifi devices and notes that a switch can add Ethernet ports. Older Nest Wifi points have no Ethernet ports and cannot be hardwired. Check the model and the intended topology before relying on wired backhaul. See Google’s Ethernet setup guidance.

4. Match Wi-Fi generation and bands to your devices

Newer Wi-Fi features help only when the router and client devices support them, and when local radio rules and operating conditions permit their use. Nest Wifi Pro is a tri-band Wi-Fi 6E system operating on 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz. A device needs Wi-Fi 6E support to connect directly to its 6 GHz band.

TP-Link’s US HB610 page describes a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh system with features including Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 320 MHz channel bandwidth; it cautions that clients must support the corresponding features. Its page also lists 2.5-GbE ports and Ethernet and wireless backhaul. Verify the exact specification and availability in your region before treating a model as a candidate. Wi-Fi 7 trial results show why the generation can be relevant, but they should not be read as a guarantee for another router or home. In a 2025 Wireless Broadband Alliance field trial involving CableLabs and Intel, a Wi-Fi 7 system delivered up to 3.5 Gbps TCP throughput in a 4,500-square-foot, two-story home; reported results also included up to 3.7 Gbps downlink at close range with a 320 MHz channel and more than 2 Gbps at typical residential distances on the access point’s floor. These are outcomes from that trial environment, not expected speeds for arbitrary equipment or homes. See the Wireless Broadband Alliance’s 2025 trial report.

5. Read headline Wi-Fi rates and device counts carefully

A combined radio rate adds theoretical capacity across bands; it is not the speed a single device will receive from the internet. Google lists Nest Wifi Pro at up to 5.4 Gbps combined across bands in the US and up to 4.2 Gbps outside the US. Google says these totals derive from IEEE specifications and depend on supported client capabilities, including Wi-Fi 6 or later clients supporting 160 MHz channels. Actual performance also depends on the ISP, devices, regulations, network conditions, and environment. See Google’s specifications and qualifications.

Likewise, Google’s figure of 100 connected devices per Nest Wifi Pro router is qualified: it assumes each device uses a maximum data rate of 1 Mbps and that broadband and Wi-Fi coverage are sufficient. It does not promise high throughput for 100 devices actively using the network at once. For a busy household, consider the kinds of activity happening simultaneously as well as the number of devices.

6. Compare candidates against your actual requirements

What to compare What to check
Wired capacity WAN, LAN, and modem or ONT connection speeds against your plan and wired-device needs.
Coverage approach One router or mesh, based on floors, area, walls, construction, congestion, and possible node locations—not square footage alone.
Backhaul Whether nodes can use Ethernet, whether the home has usable cable runs, and whether the chosen topology needs a switch.
Wi-Fi generation and bands Whether your clients support the features and frequencies you expect to use, including 6 GHz or Wi-Fi 7 features.
Region and compatibility Local radio rules, product availability and specifications in your country, and compatibility between system generations.

A Wi-Fi 7 mesh system with multi-gigabit ports may suit a home that has compatible clients, a plan above 1 Gbps, and a need for multiple coverage points. A Wi-Fi 6E mesh system may be a better match when its wired ports and client support fit the plan. Neither generation nor a coverage estimate identifies the right product without the household’s plan, layout, equipment, wiring, and region.
