Choose a wet-dry vacuum by matching it to the messes you expect, the space you can store it in, and how often you’ll have to move it. A compact model is easier to carry and put away; a larger drum means fewer stops to empty it but takes more room and gets heavier as it fills. Then check that its filter, hose, and included tools fit the jobs you plan to do.
Start with the cleanup jobs you actually have
List the tasks you expect the vacuum to handle: occasional liquid spills, car interiors, workshop debris, home-improvement cleanup, or recurring large messes. The list helps set priorities. A vacuum that is easy to grab and store may be more useful for occasional spills and car cleanup than a larger unit; frequent bulky cleanup makes capacity more valuable.
There is no single capacity that suits every home. Consumer Reports’ buying guide was updated September 15, 2016 and is archival; it says it no longer updates the category. Shop-Vac’s FAQ also advises weighing capacity against storage needs. For current product configurations, RIDGID’s U.S. catalog shows compact and cordless options as well as large-capacity models, though availability and details can change.

Balance tank capacity, storage, and portability
Consider where the vacuum will live and how it will reach the work area. Measure the storage spot and think about stairs, car loading, and distance from the storage area to the cleanup. Handles, wheels, and overall size affect how manageable it is to move. A larger tank can mean fewer emptying breaks, but the filled vacuum will be heavier to handle.
Capacity labels also need context. RIDGID explains that the gallon number on its product page is drum volume, not necessarily the amount of debris the vacuum can collect. Usable collection capacity varies with debris type, filter condition, and other factors. Treat a stated gallon figure as one comparison point, not a promise that the full drum volume is available for every job.
Choose filtration for the material you’ll pick up
“The filter you need is based on the type of debris you are picking up,” Shop-Vac says in its FAQ. For wet pickup, Shop-Vac recommends a foam sleeve; dry debris requires suitable dry filtration. For fine dust, consider a higher-efficiency or HEPA filter only if the particular vacuum supports it. Using the wrong filtration can allow dust or water to escape back into the room.

Filter fit is model-specific. Check the vacuum’s manual or product page before buying a filter, foam sleeve, or collection bag. Also make sure replacements are available: Consumer Reports recommends checking filter availability, particularly when a model uses an unusual filter that may be harder to source.

Compare performance numbers without relying on one headline rating
Where a manufacturer provides them, compare airflow (CFM), sealed pressure or lift, and air watts. These figures describe different aspects of performance; airflow can be useful when considering lighter material such as wood chips and dust. Compare like with like and avoid treating one number as a complete measure of how a vacuum will perform on every task.

Peak horsepower is especially easy to misread. RIDGID defines peak HP as a laboratory maximum-output measure, so it is not a stand-alone measure of everyday pickup performance. As one product-specific example—not a category benchmark—RIDGID lists its 9-gallon NXT vacuum at 4.25 peak HP, 231 air watts, 76 CFM, and 70 inches of lift. These are manufacturer-listed specifications for that model.

Match the hose and attachments to the work
Hose diameter and length determine what debris can pass through and how far you can reach. Shop-Vac suggests considering a 2.5-inch hose for large debris. A narrower or shorter hose may suit more confined tasks, but the choice depends on the vacuum and the material being picked up.

Check which tools are included and whether they fit the model. Depending on your jobs, useful items may include extension wands, a wet nozzle, a utility or floor nozzle, a crevice tool, adapters, a tank drain, or a blower port. A drain can simplify emptying liquids; a blower port may add flexibility, but neither replaces checking that the vacuum is designed for your intended use.
For a concrete example of what to compare, RIDGID lists its 9-gallon NXT with a 1-7/8-inch by 7-foot hose, extension wands, utility and wet nozzles, a general-debris filter, a blower port, onboard storage, and carrying handles. Those details describe that model only; they are not a recommendation or a claim that it is best for every home.

Check ongoing compatibility and safe-use limits
Before choosing a model, confirm that replacement filters, foam sleeves, bags, hoses, and attachments are available for its exact configuration. Accessory fit varies by model; verify the part compatibility and hose diameter rather than assuming a generic item will fit.
Do not use an ordinary household wet-dry vacuum to clean up toxic, carcinogenic, combustible, or other hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead, or pesticides. Shop-Vac says specially designed units are available for such materials. Follow the product manual and applicable safety requirements for the specific material.
