Choose a wearable by matching its form and features to how you will actually wear it, then check battery claims, data practices, and evidence for the specific measurements you care about. A step count, workout heart rate, sleep-stage estimate, and calorie estimate are different kinds of outputs; none should be treated as a general measure of health or a diagnosis.
Start with the measurements you want to use
Before comparing devices, name the job: counting steps, recording heart rate during exercise, spotting broad sleep and wake patterns, or receiving a particular health feature. Accuracy is metric- and context-specific. It depends on the device and model generation, the activity or setting, the people studied, and the reference method used to check it.
A systematic review of wrist-worn trackers assessed both accuracy and acceptability—the willingness to use a device for its intended task—and found studies differed in devices, populations, outcomes, and reference standards. A separate review of 158 publications examined steps, energy expenditure, and heart rate; its findings are historical evidence, not a reliable ranking of today’s models. In that review, heart-rate performance varied, and some included evidence suggested Apple Watch and Garmin performed better while Fitbit tended to underestimate. That does not establish a current universal winner. Systematic review of wrist-worn tracker accuracy and acceptability Review of commercial wearable accuracy

When evaluating a claim, look for evidence about the exact metric and use case, and ask what it was compared against. Agreement for one measurement does not validate another. Treat readiness scores, heart-rate variability, estimated calories, and sleep-stage labels as estimates rather than diagnoses or direct measures of disease.

Choose a form you can wear consistently
Compare fit, bulk, and wearing routine
Wrist bands and watches may be convenient for workouts and glanceable notifications; rings may suit people who prefer not to wear a watch. Those are practical trade-offs, not a ranking of comfort or measurement quality. Consider the device’s weight and bulk, band or ring pressure, skin irritation, and whether you can comfortably keep it on during both sleep and exercise. If possible, try the form factor and check the retailer’s return policy before committing.
Fit can affect readings
Apple advises starting with a good fit for more consistent heart-rate readings, while cautioning that reliable readings may not be available for everyone or on every occasion; unusually high or low values can occur. Follow the manufacturer’s fit guidance for your device, and do not assume that a tighter fit or a different band will make a tracker clinically accurate. Check battery life against your routine
Battery life is model-specific. Compare the manufacturer’s estimate for the exact model with how you expect to use it: workouts, GPS, an always-on display, and sensor settings can affect runtime, while charging timing matters if you want overnight tracking.

For one current example, Apple’s September 2026 specifications say Apple Watch Series 12 offers up to 24 hours of everyday battery life and up to 10 hours during an outdoor workout. These are Apple’s estimates, not independent test results, and they should not be generalized to other models or brands. No matched independent cross-brand battery test is established here. Read the privacy terms for the device and its app
The wearable and its companion app form one data system. Check what information is collected, why it is collected, who it may be shared with, how long it is retained, how to delete it, and what account, cloud, and permission controls are available. Read the wearable maker’s and app provider’s policies, then inspect the actual settings you can use.
Apple describes data minimization, on-device processing, transparency, user control, and security as its Health-data principles. It says Health app data is end-to-end encrypted under specified conditions: users must have a recent iOS and watchOS version, default two-factor authentication enabled, and a passcode. These are Apple’s stated practices and conditions, not a guarantee about every configuration or another company’s products. Apple Health app privacy information

Interpret sleep and heart-rate results cautiously
Sleep versus wake is not the same as sleep stages
In a single-night inpatient study, researchers compared Oura Ring Gen3, Fitbit Sense 2, and Apple Watch Series 8 with polysomnography in 35 healthy adults aged 20–50 who did not have a sleep disorder. The devices showed at least 95% sensitivity for distinguishing sleep from wake in those study conditions, while sensitivity for distinguishing sleep stages ranged from 50% to 86%, varying by device and stage. The small, single-night study does not establish performance for every tracker, current model, population, or night. 2024 study comparing consumer wearables with polysomnography
Use readings as context, not a medical conclusion
A tracker can help you observe patterns, but a single number or trend is not proof of a health condition. If a reading concerns you, use an appropriate medical device or consult a qualified health professional rather than relying on a consumer wellness estimate.
Quick Recap
Verify compatibility and be skeptical of medical-sounding claims
- Phone and app compatibility: Check the exact phone, operating-system, and account requirements before buying.
- Regional feature support: Health features can depend on country or region and model. Apple says ECG availability varies by region and that Apple Watch SE does not support ECG; check the current support details for the specific model and location. Apple Watch health-feature support
- Glucose claims: The FDA warns that no smartwatch or smart ring measures blood glucose non-invasively. Such products do not directly test glucose levels. If you need accurate glucose readings, consult a healthcare professional about an appropriate FDA-authorized device. FDA safety communication on smartwatches, smart rings, and blood glucose
A practical comparison checklist
- Define your priority: Choose the one or two metrics or routines you will genuinely use.
- Try the form factor: Assess fit and comfort during the times you expect to wear it, including sleep if overnight tracking matters.
- Verify the exact feature: Confirm model, phone compatibility, app requirements, and regional availability for any health feature you want.
- Check the evidence: Look for independent evaluation of the exact metric, device generation, setting, and relevant population; treat broad accuracy claims cautiously.
- Plan charging: Compare the exact model’s manufacturer estimates with your planned workout and display settings, and decide whether its charging schedule fits your routine.
- Review data handling: Read both the wearable and companion-app privacy information, then find the controls for sharing, retention, and deletion.
