A VPN is not a general ping booster for Valorant. It may help if your internet provider is taking a poor or congested route to a game server, but it also adds another connection hop and can increase latency. Before paying for one, check Riot’s server and connection settings, try a wired connection if you use Wi-Fi, and compare the same server with the VPN off and on.

The providers below are options to test—not a universal ranking. Published results differ by reviewer, location, network, and test date, and there is no standardized five-provider Valorant benchmark to predict what will work on your connection.

Will using a VPN lower my ping in Valorant?

Sometimes, but only when the VPN gives your traffic a better route than your direct connection. If your provider’s path to a Riot server is unstable or congested, a VPN endpoint may route around the problem. If the route is already good, or the issue is distant servers or poor internet quality, the VPN is unlikely to help and may add delay. ExpressVPN describes this as a conditional routing benefit; it is a vendor explanation, not proof that a VPN will improve your connection (ExpressVPN’s Valorant guidance).

Ping is only part of the picture. Track jitter (how much latency fluctuates), packet loss, route consistency, and whether the Riot client and matches connect reliably. A slightly lower average ping is not an improvement if the connection becomes erratic or fails to connect.

  • Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
  • ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs

Published testing illustrates why results should be treated as setup-specific. TechRadar reported that ExpressVPN added roughly 20–30 ms in its competitive-FPS testing, including Valorant; that result applies to its tests, not every location, plan, protocol, or network (TechRadar’s ExpressVPN review). PC Gamer’s reviewer, Jacob Fox, published a Valorant VPN guide on April 29, 2026, recommending NordVPN overall and naming Windscribe its best-ping pick. Those findings describe that reviewer’s setup, not a guarantee for your own matches (PC Gamer’s Valorant VPN guide).

How does a VPN affect Valorant’s server routing and latency?

Riot’s server selector and a VPN do different jobs. Riot says players cannot use the selector to change their shard, but solo players and party leaders can choose among servers available in their region. A VPN does not itself guarantee a different shard or matchmaking pool. Check Riot’s Server Select support page for the available choices.

ASUS ROG Rapture GT-BE98 Pro WiFi 7 Gaming Router - Quad-Band, 30Gbps, Mesh
  • Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
  • Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
  • Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
  • Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
  • Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.

A VPN routes your internet traffic through a VPN endpoint before it reaches Riot’s server. That can change the route, but the endpoint adds a hop. Choosing a VPN server in another country does not guarantee that Valorant will put you in that region’s matchmaking pool, nor that the game’s route will be shorter.

Fix basic connection problems before trying a VPN

Riot’s troubleshooting guidance recommends trying a wired connection when Wi-Fi is problematic, checking Ethernet connections, and testing without a proxy or VPN while diagnosing connection issues. The localized Polish-language support article also notes that a wired connection may be faster and more stable when Wi-Fi is the problem (Riot’s connection troubleshooting guide).

  1. Choose the server first: In Valorant, use the server selector available to you as a solo player or party leader. Record the selected server so you can use the same one in every comparison.
  2. Try a wired connection: If you are on Wi-Fi, connect by Ethernet and check the cable and network connection. Do not treat a cable as a guaranteed ping fix; it is a way to rule out Wi-Fi instability.
  3. Test the direct connection: Disconnect any VPN or proxy while checking whether Valorant and Riot’s client connect normally. This follows Riot’s troubleshooting advice and gives you a baseline.
  4. Record connection quality over multiple sessions: Note ping, jitter, packet loss, and successful game connections on the same Riot server. A single match may not represent normal conditions.

VPNs to consider for Valorant

This is a comparison set, not a ranked list of guaranteed winners. Public reviews do not provide a controlled, shared test of all four providers on the same Valorant server, network, and date. PC Gamer’s 2026 guide and Top10VPN’s guide, updated August 5, 2026, are useful context, but neither establishes what will perform best on your connection. Top10VPN also cautions against claims that VPNs speed up the internet or eliminate lag (Top10VPN’s gaming VPN guide).

Provider What the cited evidence says What to check locally
NordVPN PC Gamer recommended it overall in its Valorant guide dated April 29, 2026. NordVPN says a VPN might make a player’s real IP harder to target; that is a potential privacy benefit, not guaranteed DDoS protection (NordVPN’s gaming guidance). Compare latency, stability, and successful connections through nearby endpoints against your direct route.
ExpressVPN ExpressVPN says a VPN may help with poor routing or content-based throttling, while adding latency is also possible. TechRadar reported roughly 20–30 ms of added ping in its competitive-FPS testing that included Valorant. The measurement is specific to TechRadar’s test setup and should not be generalized. Try nearby endpoints and check whether any routing change improves consistency enough to offset added latency.
Windscribe PC Gamer named it its best-ping option in its 2026 Valorant guide. Top10VPN describes a free gaming option with a 10 GB monthly allowance; this is a stated allowance, not a performance guarantee. Measure your own route and check the current allowance and terms for your location before relying on a free option.

VPN features and performance can vary by location, protocol, endpoint, platform, and network. Provider descriptions explain their own positioning; they are not independent proof of lower Valorant ping. Current subscription prices, refund terms, and regional availability are not established here, so check the provider’s current terms directly before subscribing.

How to test a VPN for Valorant fairly

  1. Set a baseline: Pick one Riot server available in your region. With the VPN off, play or connect over multiple sessions and record ping, jitter, packet loss, and connection success.
  2. Keep the conditions comparable: Use the same device, local network, game server, and general time window where practical. Avoid comparing one endpoint in one match with a different server or a very different network condition.
  3. Try a few nearby VPN endpoints: Connect to endpoints near your location, then repeat the observations. A geographically distant endpoint may add an unnecessary detour.
  4. Compare reliability, not just the lowest number: Look for a repeatable improvement in latency and stability. If the VPN increases jitter, packet loss, or failed connections—or consistently adds ping—disconnect it for Valorant.
  5. Retest after changes: A new ISP route, endpoint, protocol, or game update can change the result. Treat an earlier improvement as specific to the conditions under which you measured it.

Does a VPN protect your IP or prevent DDoS attacks?

A VPN can mask your home IP from some parties by presenting the VPN endpoint’s address instead, and it encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN provider. ExpressVPN and NordVPN describe these as privacy or risk-reduction benefits (ExpressVPN; NordVPN). Masking an IP does not make you immune to denial-of-service attacks, guarantee that an attacker cannot identify you by other means, or improve ping. Consider this a separate reason to use a VPN from route optimization.
