No VPN can be named the best for every FFXIV player from the available evidence: there are no comparable tests showing which service improves latency or stability. A VPN changes your internet route, and that new route can help, do nothing, or make lag worse. First check your data center and connection; then compare VPN routes on your own setup before paying for a subscription.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for FFXIV
FFXIV’s regional data centers serve North America, Europe, Oceania, and Japan. Square Enix says choosing a data center closer to your physical location may reduce latency. Check its regional data center FAQ before trying to solve a long-distance connection with a VPN.
A VPN routes your traffic through a VPN server before it reaches the game. That may change a problematic segment of the path between your internet provider and the game server, but it also adds another connection point. The result depends on your location, ISP, chosen data center, VPN endpoint, and current network conditions. A nearby VPN server is not automatically the fastest route.

Square Enix’s notice on network delay and packet loss explains that packets can be lost on the internet path between your hardware and the FFXIV server. Packet loss is one possible cause of pauses or lag; it does not, on its own, establish that the game server is at fault. The notice does not endorse VPNs or claim that one will fix a particular player’s route.

Four VPN names to investigate—not a tested ranking
NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, and Proton VPN appear in third-party FFXIV VPN recommendation pages. Those listings do not provide transparent, comparable FFXIV route tests, so they are leads for evaluation—not evidence that any one provider is a winner. No current four-provider comparison of prices, platform coverage, or FFXIV performance is established here.
For NordVPN, the available official product information can help frame questions about setup, but it still says nothing about how the service performs on your route:

- Protocol: NordVPN describes NordLynx as based on WireGuard and intended to improve speed. This is the provider’s description, not an FFXIV performance result. See its NordLynx explanation.
- Device policy: NordVPN states that one account supports up to 10 devices, with constraints when devices connect to the same server. Check its simultaneous-connection policy for the current terms.
- Router setup: NordVPN’s router guidance lists the Asus RT-AX86U as an OpenVPN-capable example and says the listed Asus models do not support NordLynx. Confirm your router revision and the provider’s current compatibility instructions before relying on router-level coverage.
These specifications may help determine whether a service can be configured on your device; they cannot establish that its route to your FFXIV data center will be faster or more stable. Check each provider’s current protocols, supported systems, device rules, router instructions, privacy terms, support options, regional prices, renewal prices, and refund conditions before subscribing.
Check the cause before you trial a VPN
Start with the checks Square Enix recommends in its connectivity troubleshooting FAQ. This can prevent paying for a routing workaround when the issue is local or service-wide.

- Check World status. See whether the problem affects one World, a whole data center, or a broader region. If other Worlds or regions behave normally, note that pattern rather than assuming your ISP route is the only cause.
- Review your selected data center. Compare its location with your physical location. Square Enix says selecting a closer regional data center may reduce latency; a VPN does not change which data center your character uses.
- Rule out local network and software problems. Test wired Ethernet if practical, or check Wi-Fi stability. Review security software and firewall settings; Square Enix identifies both as possible connectivity issues. Do not disable protections broadly—use the vendor’s or Square Enix’s guidance for any necessary exception.
- Look for signs of route instability. If pauses or disconnects suggest packet loss, follow Square Enix’s support guidance for reporting network information. Its notice asks affected players to provide information to support.
- Only then compare a VPN route. Record your ordinary connection first, then test the VPN under similar conditions. Try more than one plausible endpoint and keep the VPN only if it improves your actual connection.
How to test a VPN against your normal route
Make the comparison on the same device, connection, and FFXIV data center. Since network conditions vary by time and congestion, compare during similar play periods rather than treating one short session as decisive.
- Establish a baseline with the VPN off. Note latency, visible pauses or disconnects, and when they occur. If you can measure packet loss reliably, record that too; do not treat a single ping number as a complete measure of game stability.
- Choose a plausible endpoint. Start with a VPN endpoint that could provide a different route toward the selected data center. Geographic closeness alone does not prove that endpoint is best.
- Repeat the same observations with the VPN on. Keep the game region, device, and network unchanged. Test several suitable endpoints if available, and record which one was used.
- Compare consistency, not just the lowest reading. A lower latency reading in one moment may not compensate for recurring spikes, packet loss, or disconnects. Keep a VPN only if your repeated play observations show a useful improvement.
This is a practical route-comparison method, not a published benchmark of the four named services. If your connection is already stable, a VPN may add complexity without a noticeable benefit.

Choosing by platform and setup
Playing on a PC
A provider’s desktop app is the simplest route to trial. Confirm that it supports your operating system and offers endpoints suitable for testing from your location. Compare the app’s supported protocols and stability on your device; speed claims from a provider are not evidence of low latency in FFXIV.
Playing on a console or sharing a connection
Do not assume a desktop VPN app covers a console. Whole-home or console use may require a compatible router or another supported shared-connection setup. Check the provider’s current instructions for your exact router model and protocol before buying hardware or changing network settings. NordVPN’s router documentation, for example, distinguishes OpenVPN-capable router models from support for NordLynx.

Claims a VPN comparison should not promise
- A guaranteed ping reduction: no provider can be declared a universal FFXIV latency fix without comparable testing for relevant locations, ISPs, and data centers.
- Automatic protection from game-related attacks: the information cited here does not establish that a VPN inherently prevents DDoS attacks against FFXIV players.
- Ban evasion or permission to bypass restrictions: the cited evidence does not establish that using a VPN to bypass a ban or access restriction complies with Square Enix’s terms. Do not treat a VPN as permission to do so.
- Performance inferred from protocol marketing: a provider’s speed description or affiliate page is not an independent FFXIV route test.
