If you need VPN protection for every app on your device, Brave Firewall + VPN is the relevant option in this comparison. A VPN browser extension can cover traffic inside Brave without covering the rest of your device. This is a feature-and-documentation comparison, not a test: no five-extension test results are available, so there is no evidence-based “best” extension or speed winner to name.
Does Brave work with VPN extensions?
Yes. Brave says Chrome Web Store extensions work in its browser. That confirms compatibility, not safety or endorsement: Brave warns that some extensions can pose security risks and says it cannot vouch for third-party extensions’ security, privacy, or data handling. Before installing one, check who publishes it, what permissions it requests, and what its privacy documentation says.
One documented example is Proton VPN’s browser extension, which Proton says works in Brave and other Chromium-based browsers. That establishes compatibility for this extension, not a finding about every VPN extension or a recommendation based on comparative testing.
Does a VPN extension protect all my device traffic?
Not necessarily. A browser extension may protect activity within Brave, while connections from other apps and browsers continue outside its coverage. Proton explicitly says its extension protects browser activity, not connections made by other apps, other browsers, or system functions such as updates. Check the scope stated by the specific provider; installing an extension does not by itself make your whole device use a VPN.

Brave Firewall + VPN is described by Brave as operating at the network level, protecting the whole device and apps beyond the Brave browser. That makes it a different type of option from a browser-only extension. The choice depends first on whether you want browser traffic covered or device-wide coverage.

How to choose an extension safely
- Confirm its coverage. Find out whether it routes only browser traffic or includes a separate whole-device app. Do not assume an extension covers other apps.
- Check the publisher and permissions. Brave advises users to inspect permission prompts. Consider whether the requested access makes sense for the extension’s stated function.
- Read the provider’s privacy information. Look for clear explanations of what data is handled and the scope of any privacy or no-logs claims. Treat provider statements as claims unless their verification and scope are established.
- Check current plan terms. Prices, included features, trial terms, device limits, and regional availability can change. Confirm them on the provider’s official page and at checkout.
Is there a best VPN extension for Brave in 2026?
The available documentation does not support naming a best extension. It establishes that Brave supports Chrome Web Store extensions and that Proton documents a Brave-compatible extension with browser-only coverage. It does not provide a five-product comparison, hands-on installation results, leak checks, speed measurements, streaming tests, or reliability results. Without comparable testing, ranking extensions or declaring a performance winner would be misleading.
If your priority is coverage beyond Brave, assess a whole-device VPN service rather than assuming an extension will protect other apps. If browser-only coverage meets your needs, compare individual extensions’ stated scope, permissions, privacy documentation, and current plan terms. Brave Firewall + VPN’s current features and price are listed on Brave’s product page; Proton’s documentation explains its extension’s coverage limits at Proton support.
