Choose a video game soundtrack by the sound you want during the activity—not by the game’s popularity. For focus, start with restrained or ambient music; for relaxation, try delicate, slower-feeling passages; for immersion, look for a score whose atmosphere and narrative hold your attention. Sample a quiet passage and a more intense one before committing: a soundtrack that supports one listener or task may distract another.
Choose by what you want the music to do
For focus or studying
Start with music that feels restrained, ambient, or gently repetitive. Pay attention to how often the sound changes sharply: a sudden increase in intensity may pull your attention from reading or writing. University of Central Florida Associate Professor of Music Theory Will Ayers recommends Fez for working, reading, and studying, and describes its intensity as suitable for a deep study session. He points to the ambient soundtrack and expansive soundscapes of Antichamber as options for extended reading or thoughtful consideration. UCF also describes Stardew Valley as having calming tunes suited to a day’s work. These are Ayers’s recommendations, not evidence that any of the soundtracks improves concentration or performance. Read UCF’s study-listening recommendations.

For relaxation
Look for delicate textures, slower-feeling passages, or a mood you personally find calming. Ayers recommends Flower, describing its soundtrack as delicate and its interactive audio as aligned with the ongoing music. He also describes Stardew Valley as offering calming tunes. If you prefer a darker atmosphere, sample Limbo; Ayers notes that its soundtrack can haunt as well as comfort, so it will not suit everyone’s idea of a relaxing listen. See UCF’s soundtrack recommendations.
For immersion
Choose a score whose timbres, mood, and emotional arc make you imagine a place or narrative. Composer Bobby Krlic described the Returnal album as intended to evoke “the mystery, the journey, the payoff” even for people who had not played the game. He said the album drew on the game’s narrative and presented audio in a different order and form from its in-game appearance. That is the composer’s aim for that release, not a guaranteed effect for every listener. Read PlayStation’s interview with Bobby Krlic.

Compare candidate soundtracks by listening
When you are deciding between albums, use the same questions for each. There is no objectively best soundtrack for a given goal; the useful choice depends on the sound you enjoy and how it behaves during your activity.
- Intensity and contrast: Is the energy fairly even, or do loud, tense passages arrive often?
- Texture and density: Do you hear sparse ambient tones, gentle melodies, busy rhythmic layers, or a large orchestral sound?
- Change over time: Does the music loop steadily, evolve gradually, or shift in response to events?
- Mood and associations: Does it feel soothing, curious, melancholy, ominous, triumphant, or suited to another mood you want?
- Album flow: Does the released album work as a sequence, or would selected tracks suit you better?
Game music can react dynamically to play, which means the soundtrack album and the in-game experience may differ. Composer Winifred Phillips describes Spyder as using short ambient pieces during exploration and layered action music that builds momentum as the player progresses. That example illustrates why it is worth checking for peaks and abrupt transitions when choosing music to leave on in the background. Read GameDeveloper’s interview with Winifred Phillips.

Sample tracks before settling on an album
- Start with one representative quiet passage. Notice whether its texture and pace fit the activity or mood you have in mind.
- Try a higher-intensity passage as well. A quiet opening alone may not reveal how often the music becomes dramatic or busy.
- Notice your own response. If changes repeatedly pull you away from study or work, choose a less dynamic album or make a playlist of quieter tracks. If the shifts deepen the atmosphere you want, they may be a good fit for immersion.
This is a practical listening method, not a clinical test or proof that music changes concentration, stress, or performance.

Check what the album release contains and where it is available
A soundtrack album may be edited and mixed for listening outside the game rather than reproducing exactly what you hear while playing. Krlic said the Returnal album used “a unique set of mixes created especially for the format.” In a separate release example, FromSoftware lead sound designer and composer Tsukasa Saito announced the Elden Ring soundtrack as a 67-track album available on streaming services worldwide on September 9, 2022. These are examples of release approaches at those dates; check current streaming services and availability in your region. Krlic on the Returnal album; Saito’s Elden Ring announcement.

If you collect records or prefer a physical album, video game soundtrack vinyl is one possible format; it is not necessary to enjoy a soundtrack. PlayStation’s 2016 announcement for Bound documented both digital and vinyl editions. That historical example does not establish current stock or prices. Search for the exact game soundtrack and edition, then verify availability with the retailer or label. Read PlayStation’s Bound soundtrack announcement.

The recommendations above are qualitative descriptions and a composer’s account of creative intent. The cited sources do not establish that a particular game soundtrack raises concentration, lowers stress, or improves performance. Treat “good for studying” or “relaxing” as a reason to sample a score, then decide whether its sound works for you.
