Choose a wired video doorbell if your existing wiring is compatible and you want dependable power—or continuous recording on a model that supports it. Choose a battery doorbell if flexible placement matters more, but plan for charging and check its recording limits. For storage and subscriptions, verify what the exact model saves, where it saves it, and what remains available without a paid plan: an offline buffer is not necessarily a user-accessible local archive.
Start with how you want the doorbell powered
“Wired” and “battery” are product designs, not just two installation methods. They affect charging, placement, installation requirements, and which recording modes are available. A battery doorbell connected to existing wires may still operate as a battery model, with battery-model recording limits.
Choose wired for steady power, if your system is compatible
A wired model can avoid routine battery charging. Some wired models also support continuous recording, but that feature depends on the specific device and plan; wiring alone does not guarantee 24/7 recording. Check the model’s power requirements and recording specifications before buying.

Choose battery for placement flexibility
A battery model can be easier to place where suitable doorbell wiring is unavailable, but you will need to recharge it. Some battery doorbells can connect to existing wiring for a trickle charge; that does not necessarily make the battery optional or remove its recording restrictions. Ring describes this arrangement for its battery-powered doorbells in its hardwiring guide.

Google says the Nest Doorbell (battery) cannot provide 24/7 video history, even when optionally wired. Its event and 24/7 history table lists device-specific recording options.
Check what “local storage” actually means
Before choosing a doorbell advertised with local storage, find out whether it saves recordings to user-accessible SD-card or hub storage, keeps only a temporary internal buffer, or provides a live stream without a local recording archive. These are different capabilities.
Google says certain battery cameras and doorbells can retain events in internal memory during an internet outage and upload them to the cloud after the connection returns. The owner cannot access that internal memory directly, so it is an outage buffer—not a browsable local archive or independent alternative to cloud history. If you need to review recordings locally or keep them without relying on a cloud plan, confirm that the exact model offers user-accessible local recording and explain how to retrieve it. Do not infer this from terms such as “internal memory” or “works offline.”
Compare no-subscription features before paying for a plan
Subscription-free use varies by brand and model. Ring says users can view live video and answer notifications without a plan, but saving recorded event video to its cloud requires a plan. Google’s tables list model-specific free previews or event history, alongside paid plans with longer history and, on supported devices, 24/7 history. Check the current Ring plan details and Google history options for the doorbell you are considering.
To decide whether a subscription is worthwhile, compare the recording and access you actually need—not just a headline monthly price. Check:

- Whether it saves motion events, continuous footage, or both.
- How long saved clips remain available.
- Which devices or locations the plan covers.
- Whether the detection features you want are included.
- What live view, alerts, and saved recordings you can use without paying.
Google distinguishes event history from 24/7 history, and 24/7 recording is limited to supported models. Ring says its cloud-stored motion-event videos can be retained for up to 180 days; this is an upper retention period, not a universal setting for every plan or country. Both services’ features and availability can vary by device and region. Check the current local terms before buying; there is no single cross-brand subscription price that applies everywhere.

Verify wiring, transformer, and chime compatibility
Do not assume all wired doorbells use the same transformer. Requirements vary by model: Ring’s guide lists 8–24 VAC, 5–40 VA for Ring battery doorbells and Video Doorbell Elite, and 10–24 VAC, 8–40 VA for Video Doorbell Wired. Other models have their own specifications. These are examples from Ring’s model-specific hardwiring guidance, not universal requirements.

Before purchase, check the exact model’s current installation guide against your transformer and chime. Google recommends checking system compatibility and notes that a professional can measure voltage or upgrade an incompatible system in its doorbell compatibility guidance. Electrical work may require a qualified installer or permits under local rules.
