The best USB hub for your laptop is the one that supports your laptop’s specific USB-C port and provides the ports you actually use. For a compact setup with HDMI, Ethernet, USB data, and card readers, the Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1) is one example to consider. For a fixed desk setup with broader needs and higher host-charging capacity, the CalDigit TS4 is a powered Thunderbolt 4 dock—not a like-for-like portable hub.
First, check what your laptop’s USB-C port supports
A USB-C connector describes the shape of the plug, not every capability behind it. Before choosing a hub, check your laptop’s specifications for the particular port you plan to use. For HDMI output through the Anker 555, Anker says the host port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode. Charging the laptop through the hub also requires host support for USB Power Delivery (PD). A port that lacks either capability will not gain it simply by connecting a hub. Anker’s product specifications and selection guidance describe these requirements.
- For an external monitor: confirm that the laptop’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or the display protocol the hub requires.
- For charging through the hub: confirm that the port supports USB Power Delivery input.
- For data: check the port’s supported USB speed as well as the hub’s advertised speed; the connection is limited by the slower part of the chain.
Portable hub or powered desk dock?
A compact multiport hub suits a laptop bag and adds selected connections from one host cable. A powered dock is designed for a more permanent desk setup and may provide broader connectivity and higher-power charging. The Anker 555 and CalDigit TS4 illustrate those different categories; their specifications do not establish a universal winner or a complete market ranking.
| Example | Best suited to | Specified capabilities | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1), A8383 | A compact everyday setup needing HDMI, Ethernet, USB data, and SD or microSD readers | Up to 85W laptop pass-through from a 100W PD input; HDMI up to 4K at 60Hz; 10Gbps data ports; 1Gbps Ethernet; UHS-I SD and microSD. See Anker’s specifications. | The laptop must support the relevant video and charging functions. A compatible charger and cable are not included; see Anker’s compatibility guidance. |
| CalDigit TS4 Thunderbolt 4 Dock | A powered, fixed desk setup with broader dock requirements | Up to 98W host charging; see CalDigit’s TS4 specifications for its port and power details. | This is a dock alternative, not a direct portable-hub comparison. Check host and display compatibility before choosing it. |
What to compare before you buy
Ports for your devices
List the devices you need to connect at the same time: for example, a monitor, wired network, USB-A accessories, USB-C data devices, and memory cards. Check the number and type of ports rather than relying on a total port count. A USB-C PD input used to connect a charger may be charge-only; it is not necessarily a USB data or video port.

Display resolution and refresh rate
Read an HDMI claim together with the laptop’s host-port requirements. Anker specifies HDMI output up to 4K at 60Hz for the 555, but the laptop must support the required display mode. A hub’s output specification alone does not guarantee that every laptop can drive that resolution and refresh rate.
Data speed, Ethernet, and card formats
Match the hub’s data ports to the speed and connector types of your devices. If wired networking matters, check the Ethernet rating; the 555 is specified for 1Gbps Ethernet. If you import photos or other files from memory cards, confirm whether you need SD, microSD, or both, and check the card-reader standard. The 555 specifies UHS-I SD and microSD.

Power input and laptop pass-through
Do not assume that a hub’s charger input rating is the amount delivered to the laptop. For the 555, Anker specifies up to 100W PD input and up to 85W laptop pass-through; some input power is used to operate the hub. Anker says a 100W PD charger and cable are needed to reach the stated maximum, and those accessories are not included. Whether 85W is enough depends on your laptop’s charging requirements. Anker’s product page and compatibility guide provide the details.

How to decide between the examples
- Choose the Anker 555 as a candidate if you want a compact hub with HDMI, Ethernet, USB data, and SD/microSD readers, and your laptop supports the required video and charging features.
- Consider the CalDigit TS4 as a different class of product if you need a powered desk dock and its Thunderbolt 4 and port requirements fit your laptop and displays.
- Compare the specifications against your actual setup: host compatibility, display resolution and refresh rate, data-port speed, Ethernet, card formats, host charging, included power equipment, portability, and current price.
Anker’s editorial selection guidance puts the central point succinctly: “The best USB-C hub for you is the one that covers your actual needs—nothing more, nothing less.” Anker attributes this as its own guidance, not to a named individual.
