Choose a USB-C cable by matching its power rating, data speed, connector ends, and—if you need video—display support to the exact devices you’re connecting. USB-C describes the plug, not a guaranteed level of charging, data transfer, or monitor compatibility.
What to check before you buy
Check the specifications for both devices and the charger, then compare the cable against the requirements of the connection you plan to use. A cable’s maximum capability does not make a device charge faster or add features its ports lack.
- Power: Find the device’s charging requirement and the charger’s output. Choose a cable rated to handle the power the setup requires.
- Data: Match the cable’s stated data rate to the ports and your intended use. For charging alone, a high data rate may not matter; for external storage or large transfers, it can.
- Video: If you’re connecting a display, verify that the source, cable, and monitor support the required video mode and display resolution and refresh rate.
- Connector ends: Make sure each end matches the port or input on the device it will connect to.
- Length and construction: Choose a practical length and confirm the manufacturer specifies the capabilities you need for that exact cable.
Will any USB-C cable work for a laptop or phone?
Not necessarily. A cable may fit the port yet fall short of the device’s charging, data, or video requirements. USB-IF puts it plainly: “All cables do not have the same capabilities.” Check the specifications for the exact laptop or phone, charger, and cable rather than relying on the connector shape.
How much power should the cable support?
Match the cable’s power rating to the charging setup: the device’s input requirement and the charger’s output. USB Power Delivery negotiates power between compatible equipment, so a higher-rated cable does not force a laptop or phone to draw more power than it supports.

USB-IF says USB Power Delivery Revision 3.1, announced in 2021, supports up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. That ceiling does not mean every device needs a 240W cable. For USB-C to USB-C cables that pass its compliance program, USB-IF’s current guidance uses 60W or 240W power markings; check the cable’s own specifications and the device’s requirements. A 60W-rated cable may suit many everyday devices, but it is not automatically sufficient for every laptop.
USB-IF also says 100W cable certification was deprecated. A “100W” description may still appear as a shopper-facing product specification, but do not treat that label by itself as proof of current USB-IF certification. If certification matters, look for the appropriate marking and verify the exact model.

What data speed do you need?
Use the cable’s marked or manufacturer-specified data rate as your guide, and compare it with the capabilities of both connected ports. A faster-rated cable cannot make a slower port transfer data faster. If the cable is mainly for charging, data speed may be a lower priority; if you regularly move large files or connect external storage, it matters more.

Can a USB-C cable connect a laptop or phone to a monitor?
Only if the complete connection supports video. USB-C monitor connections commonly use DisplayPort Alt Mode, but the host device’s port, cable, and display must support the required mode. Microsoft advises checking support on the computer or phone, display, and cable; see its USB-C troubleshooting guidance for Windows. For background on DisplayPort over USB-C, see VESA’s DisplayPort FAQ.
Check that the combination supports the resolution and refresh rate you want. A USB-C plug is not evidence that a port or cable carries video.

Which connector ends should the cable have?
- USB-C device to USB-C device or display: Choose USB-C to USB-C, with the power, data, and video capabilities your connection needs.
- USB-C source to a DisplayPort monitor: A USB-C to DisplayPort cable may work if the source supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and the cable supports the intended display mode.
- Other monitor inputs: You may need a compatible adapter or dock. Check support for the source, adapter or dock, and display rather than assuming a connector change will provide video.
Is USB-IF certification worth checking?
Certification is a useful way to check whether a specific product is listed as certified to bear the USB-IF logo; it is not a compatibility guarantee for your devices. USB-IF cautions that a certified cable does not augment the capabilities of connected products.
Search the exact product in USB-IF’s Product Search. Its directory covers products certified to bear the USB-IF logo, and it defaults to products certified within the previous two years. USB-IF notes that older records may not appear under the current program iteration, so absence from the results is not proof that a cable is incompatible.
