Choose a UPI provider based first on where customers pay you: a bank- or provider-issued merchant QR is usually the relevant setup for a physical shop, while an online payment aggregator is designed to facilitate payments through web checkout and settle collected money to merchants. If you take payments both in person and online, compare providers that cover both channels. Fees, settlement, eligibility and support depend on the provider and your merchant category, so get the current terms in writing before signing up.
Start with the way you take payments
For a physical shop: merchant QR acceptance
For counter sales, ask a bank or payment provider for merchant UPI acceptance and a provider-issued merchant QR. NPCI says merchant onboarding broadly involves compliance and risk checks, merchant identification and UPI configuration, and that the acquiring bank should assign a merchant category code that matches the business. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ for its merchant onboarding and QR guidance.
A QR display stand can make the code visible at checkout, but it is only a way to present the QR; it does not itself provide payment acceptance. Obtain the QR from the bank or provider and confirm it is configured for your business.

For website sales: online checkout
If customers pay on your website, look for an online payment aggregator or other provider arrangement that supports UPI within checkout. RBI defines a payment aggregator as a business that facilitates payments to merchants through one or more payment channels and subsequently settles the collected money to merchants. That category is relevant to online checkout and may also suit a business seeking several payment channels. Check the current RBI direction for applicable details: RBI’s Master Direction on Regulation of Payment Aggregators.

For both counter and online sales
A single provider may cover both a merchant QR and online checkout, or you may use separate arrangements. Compare the actual channel coverage and written terms rather than assuming a provider’s QR service includes website payments, or that its checkout product includes a shop QR.

Understand the India MDR framework before comparing fees
The Ministry of Finance’s PIB release of 15 September 2026 describes the following MDR framework. MDR is a merchant-side charge within the payment ecosystem, not a charge levied on customers making UPI payments. The release says all P2P UPI transactions remain free and P2M transactions up to ₹2,000 remain free of MDR. It also says small merchants, including street vendors, receiving up to ₹1 lakh per month through UPI QR in the Person-to-Person-Merchant (P2PM) category continue to receive zero MDR on all transactions.
Recommended Free Tools
For specified P2M transactions above ₹2,000, the release describes 0.4% MDR, capped at ₹300 for transactions of ₹75,000 and above. For specified transactions above ₹2,000 in named essential sectors, it describes a flat ₹5 MDR; for named capital-market payments, it describes 0.02% MDR capped at ₹300. These categories and conditions matter: do not assume every transaction or business is treated the same way. Confirm your merchant classification and how the rules apply to your contract with the acquiring bank or provider. Read the dated release: Ministry of Finance: UPI Continues to Remain Free for Peer to Peer Transactions and 96% of Merchant Transactions.
