To get 4K at 120Hz from a PS5, choose a TV or monitor whose exact model—and the HDMI port you plan to use—supports that combination. Check 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM separately in the manufacturer’s specifications and manual; an HDMI 2.1 label alone does not confirm every feature. Sony confirms PS5 supports 4K 120Hz output and recommends using the cable included with the console or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120Hz.
What a PS5 display needs for 4K at 120Hz
The PS5 can output 4K video at 120Hz, but the display and connection must support that signal. Sony’s PS5 resolution guidance advises checking the TV’s 4K/120Hz support, the correct HDMI 2.1 input, and any TV setting needed to enable the input’s full capability.
Verify the exact resolution-and-refresh-rate combination. A specification listing 4K resolution and 120Hz separately does not necessarily establish that the display accepts 4K at 120Hz. Check the manual or official specification sheet for the particular model and port.
Compare the HDMI input, VRR and ALLM
Check the port you will actually use
Some displays have HDMI inputs with different capabilities. Confirm which specific port supports 4K/120Hz, then check whether a setting on the display must be enabled for that input. Connect the PS5 to that port.

Verify VRR and ALLM independently
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) synchronizes the display’s refresh with PS5 output on compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR displays. Sony notes that results can vary by display and game. Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) is available only on compatible TVs. Sony’s PS5 features information describes these as separate capabilities, so do not treat HDMI 2.1 branding as proof that both are supported.
Choose between a 4K TV and a 120Hz monitor
A TV is a practical fit for a larger shared viewing setup; a desktop monitor suits closer viewing. Decide whether 4K resolution at 120Hz is essential, or whether a desktop-sized display at a lower resolution is acceptable.

| Option | What to verify | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 4K 120Hz TV | The exact TV model and HDMI input support 4K at 120Hz; check VRR and ALLM separately. | Fits larger shared viewing, but features can differ between models and HDMI ports. |
| 120Hz monitor | The exact PS5-supported resolution and refresh rate, plus the capabilities of the HDMI input. | Can suit desktop play, but a 120Hz monitor is not necessarily 4K. |
For example, Sony’s 27-inch Gaming Monitor with DualSense Charging Hook is QHD (2560 × 1440) and supports up to 120Hz on PS5. Sony lists HDMI 2.1 inputs for it. It is an example of a compatible 120Hz monitor, not a 4K display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck PS5 settings and reported display capabilities
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review the connected HDMI device’s reported capabilities to see what the console detects.
- Check Resolution and Video Transfer Rate. Sony notes that lowering Video Transfer Rate can limit 4K 120Hz output.
Troubleshoot when 4K 120Hz is unavailable
If the PS5 does not offer or display 4K at 120Hz, check the signal path before concluding the display is incompatible. Sony recommends these checks in its resolution troubleshooting guidance:
