The right TV depends on what you want the drive to do: play files stored on it, record live broadcasts to it, or both. Those are separate features, and a USB port that plays videos does not automatically support TV recording. Check the exact TV model’s regional specifications and manual for supported drive formats, capacity, power needs, port labels, USB speed, and media codecs before buying.

Playback and broadcast recording are different TV features

For playback, the TV reads compatible files from a connected drive. For broadcast recording, the TV writes a programme to a drive, and the set must explicitly support USB HDD recording. Sony’s support guidance says a drive used for recording should connect to the TV’s designated recording port; the label and feature availability depend on the model and region. Sony explains its BRAVIA USB HDD compatibility requirements.

  • Play personal media: Check the TV’s USB media-player feature and the supported containers, file extensions, and codecs.
  • Record broadcasts: Confirm that USB HDD recording is listed for the exact model and country, and identify the required recording port. A playback-capable USB connection is not proof of recording support.
  • Do both: Verify each feature separately. Also check whether recording has regional restrictions or a limit on simultaneous recording streams.

Check the drive format, capacity, and power requirements

There is no single filesystem, capacity, or power rule that applies to every TV. For example, LG USA’s USB connection and viewing guidance recommends FAT32 or NTFS and an external drive up to 2 TB for the models covered by that guidance. LG also specifies a drive rated at 5 V and no more than 500 mA. These are manufacturer instructions with a particular scope—not universal limits for every LG set or other brands. See LG USA’s USB storage connection guidance.

Other models may accept different filesystems or capacities. Sony’s compatibility information, for instance, sets requirements by model family rather than one blanket rule. Use the exact TV’s documentation before formatting a drive: reformatting can erase its contents, and a format accepted for playback may not meet the requirements for recording.

Why port power matters

A portable drive draws power from USB. If it needs more current than the TV port can supply, it may fail to start, disconnect, or behave unreliably. Sony notes that some drives may need their own power supply; LG’s cited guidance specifies 500 mA or less for the described connection. Check the drive’s rating and the TV manual, and use a separately powered drive when the TV manufacturer’s requirements call for it.

Use the right USB port—and check its speed

Port labels and capabilities can differ on the same TV. When recording is supported, connect the drive to the port identified for recording, often labeled HDD REC. For ordinary media playback, follow the manual’s specified USB port and connection instructions.

Sony’s BRAVIA 9 II / BRAVIA 7 II help guide says all USB ports support Hi-Speed USB and identifies the blue port as SuperSpeed. It also says USB hubs are unsupported in that guide. This is an example for those TV families, not a rule for every television. The number of ports alone is not a useful measure: compare their purpose, speed, location, and power specifications.

Check file compatibility, not just the drive format

A TV can recognize a drive’s filesystem and still be unable to play a particular file. Playback depends on the file’s container, codec, and other model-specific support. Sony cautions that playback may fail depending on the media file even when a format is supported. LG likewise notes that supported extensions and codecs vary by model. Review the model’s media-playback list for the files you actually use; a list of supported extensions does not necessarily confirm support for every codec inside them.

A current specification example: Sony BRAVIA 7 II K-85XR75M2

Sony UK’s 2026 model-year specification page for the K-85XR75M2 lists support for USB drive formats FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS, plus four HDMI inputs. It lists USB HDD recording as “Yes (1Rec),” with Italy as an exception. The “1Rec” entry indicates one recording stream in that specification. These details apply to the listed model and regional listing; they should not be assumed for other screen sizes, model variants, or countries. See Sony UK’s K-85XR75M2 specifications.

Pre-purchase compatibility checklist

  1. Find the full model number and country version. Similar names can cover different regional specifications.
  2. Confirm the intended feature. Look separately for USB media playback and USB HDD broadcast recording.
  3. Match the drive’s filesystem and capacity. Follow the requirements for that model and feature, rather than relying on a general brand rule.
  4. Check power and the correct port. Compare the drive’s power rating with the TV’s USB limits; identify any HDD REC port required for recording.
  5. Verify port speed and connection restrictions. Use the port specified by the manual; check whether the TV supports hubs if you plan to use one.
  6. Check the actual media files. Confirm container and codec support, not only the drive format or file extension.
