There is no single best tropical island for fall: choose based on your exact travel month, preferred activities, local weather patterns and comfort with possible storm-related disruption. September, October and November can bring different conditions, even within one destination.
Start with the month, not the word “fall”
Fall is not one uniform tropical travel season. In Hawaiʻi, the National Weather Service describes September through November as a transition toward more unsettled weather. The Caribbean remains within the Atlantic hurricane-season calendar through November 30. Those dates describe when storms are possible, not whether a particular island or trip will be affected. The CDC’s hurricane guidance explains the season context.
Compare the conditions and activities for your actual dates, then check active forecasts and official advisories as departure approaches. For storm-related flexibility, review the booking’s cancellation and change terms before paying.
Match the destination to your trip
For north-shore surfing in Hawaiʻi
Hawaiʻi’s official tourism authority identifies fall as the start of north-shore surf season, with larger waves building through November. That may suit experienced surfers; travelers focused on swimming should look at more sheltered coasts and check current beach conditions. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority’s weather information is useful seasonal context, not a substitute for local surf and beach advisories.
#1 Best Overall
For events and cultural activities
Hawaiʻi’s tourism authority lists fall festivals and cultural events across multiple islands. If an event is part of your reason for going, confirm its current date and location before choosing an island or booking.
For swimming, hiking or quieter scenery
Set your priorities first, then compare the specific coast and area where you would stay. A resort coast, a windward slope and a high-elevation hiking area can have very different conditions on the same island. Also consider whether you want a busy resort area or a quieter setting; do not assume an island-wide weather label describes every place you might visit.
Read Hawaiʻi weather at the local level
Hawaiʻi’s terrain creates sharp microclimate differences over short distances. Windward slopes and mountains receive most of the rain, while leeward areas can have different conditions. November through March are generally the wetter months, but that seasonal pattern cannot predict the weather for a specific stay. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority’s weather overview describes these broad patterns.

The National Weather Service likewise frames September–November as a transition period, when tropical systems remain possible and north-shore surf builds toward November. Use seasonal descriptions to narrow your options, not as a sunshine guarantee; check local forecasts closer to travel.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Compare islands using the same criteria
Once you have dates and a shortlist, assess each candidate on the same measures. For Caribbean islands, the available evidence does not establish a current island-by-island fall weather ranking, so do not treat a broad regional season calendar as a forecast for one destination.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Season and local weather | What is typical for these dates, and how much do conditions vary by coast, elevation or resort area? |
| Storm-season flexibility | What official season applies, what advisories are active near departure, and what are the booking’s change and cancellation terms? |
| Activities | Are surfing, swimming, hiking, wildlife or cultural events the main priority? Which coast or location fits? |
| Getting there and around | How practical are flight access, local transport and island-to-island transfers for the time available? |
| Trip atmosphere | Do you prefer a busy resort area or quieter scenery, and does your lodging location match that preference? |
Compare current flight options, lodging locations and transport arrangements for your dates; these can change and are not determined by the season alone.

Use season dates as context, not a prediction
Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety says, “Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends on November 30 of each year, although tropical cyclones have occurred outside of this window.” The calendar marks a period when tropical cyclones are possible; it cannot tell you whether a storm will affect your itinerary. See Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety’s weather hazards guidance and consult current official forecasts and advisories when your trip is near.
Avoid choosing on claims that any destination is hurricane-proof or guaranteed sunny. A useful decision is narrower: which island, coast and lodging location best fit your dates and priorities, with booking terms you can accept if plans change?
