To choose a Thunderbolt add-in card, first match its manufacturer’s compatibility list to your motherboard’s exact model and hardware revision. Then confirm the required PCIe slot, Thunderbolt header and cable, BIOS or firmware guidance, display connections, and operating-system support. A free PCIe slot—or a header with a similar name—is not enough to establish compatibility.
Will a Thunderbolt add-in card work with your motherboard?
It will only work as intended if the card and motherboard are supported together. Start with the full motherboard model name and revision, then check the card maker’s current compatibility list for that exact board. For example, GIGABYTE publishes a supported-motherboard list for its GC-MAPLE RIDGE (Rev. 1.0) and cautions that support can vary with motherboard specifications: GIGABYTE’s compatibility list.
Use the card’s manual and the motherboard manual together. They determine whether the board provides the required slot, header, cable connection, firmware settings, and other system support. A similar model name or a physically fitting card does not prove the combination is supported.

What to check before buying
1. Exact board and card models
Write down your motherboard’s complete model name and hardware revision, then identify the exact add-in-card model and revision. Use the card manufacturer’s compatibility list rather than assuming that support for one board in a product family covers every model or revision.
#1 Best Overall
- 1. Intel Thunderbolt 4 JHL 8540 controller
- 2. Ultrafast connectivity: Two Type-C ports with USB 4 support, up to 40Gb/s bi-directional bandwidth, per port allows you to connect up to five Thunderbolt-enabled devices in a daisy-chain configuration using Thunderbolt cables.
- DisplayPort 1.4: support up to 8K resolution monitors
- Quick charge solution: up to 100W quick charge
2. PCIe slot and available lanes
Check the specified slot in both manuals, including whether the card requires a slot connected to the CPU or a particular lane configuration. Requirements differ: ASUS says the recommended PCIe slot for ThunderboltEX 4 can vary by motherboard and instructs users to install it in a PCIe 3.0 slot; GIGABYTE specifies an available PCIEX4 slot for GC-MAPLE RIDGE. ASRock’s guidance that its Thunderbolt 4 AIC is compatible with PCIe slots from the CPU applies to that card and its supported systems, not to all Thunderbolt cards. See the ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 manual, GIGABYTE GC-MAPLE RIDGE manual, and ASRock Thunderbolt 4 AIC support page.
3. Thunderbolt header and cable
Confirm that the motherboard has the specific header required by the card and that you have the correct bundled cable. ASUS documents a bundled 14-1-pin cable connecting ThunderboltEX 4 to the motherboard’s TB_HEADER. GIGABYTE documents a 5-pin Thunderbolt header cable for GC-MAPLE RIDGE and notes that the cable has two connectors, with the correct one selected for the board header. Do not assume that headers or cables are interchangeable because their names or appearance seem similar.

- Intel certified Thunderbolt 5 add-on card
- Dual USB Type-C ports support up to 130 watts total of fast charging, and up to 96W for one device
- Up to five Thunderbolt devices can be daisy-chained
- Up to 120 Gbps of bandwidth for superfast data transfers and video output
- DisplayPort 2.1 port supports up to three 8K 60 Hz displays with DSC
4. BIOS, firmware, and other connections
Look for board-model-specific BIOS or firmware instructions in the manuals and support pages. The available vendor procedures do not establish one universal BIOS recipe, so do not apply settings meant for a different motherboard. Also check the card manual for any auxiliary power connection or other required cabling before purchasing or installing it.
5. Operating system and drivers
Verify that the manufacturer supports your operating system and that compatible drivers are available for your board and card. GIGABYTE’s GC-MAPLE RIDGE product page lists Windows 10 64-bit version 20H2 or later; check the current product support page for the latest driver and operating-system information rather than treating that listing as proof of support for every newer or different OS.

Will the card provide the ports and display support you need?
Compare the card’s generation, port count, data-rate specification, and display path with the devices you plan to connect. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise that every system or connected device will reach the advertised maximum.
| Card | Vendor-listed features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 | Thunderbolt 4; 40 Gbps bidirectional bandwidth; USB4-device compatibility; DisplayPort 1.4 support, according to ASUS. | Use ASUS’s current compatibility list and board-specific slot guidance. ASUS support FAQ. |
| GIGABYTE GC-MAPLE RIDGE (Rev. 1.0) | Two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports and up to 40 Gb/s maximum bandwidth, according to GIGABYTE. | GIGABYTE describes support for two 4K displays at 60 FPS subject to DisplayPort signal input from a discrete graphics card. GIGABYTE product page. |
Check the display signal path
If you intend to connect monitors through the card, determine how video reaches its Thunderbolt ports. GIGABYTE says GC-MAPLE RIDGE display support depends on a DisplayPort signal input from a discrete graphics card. Check the card manual for the required input cable, output connections, and display limits, and make sure your graphics card can provide the required signal. A card’s Thunderbolt data-rate specification alone does not establish its monitor capabilities.

A practical compatibility check
- Identify the hardware: record the motherboard’s full model and revision, plus the exact add-in-card model and revision.
- Check official support: find the card maker’s current compatibility list and confirm your exact motherboard entry.
- Compare manuals: confirm the required PCIe slot, lane or CPU connection guidance, and motherboard Thunderbolt header.
- Confirm the wiring: identify the correct bundled header cable and any auxiliary power or DisplayPort input cables required by the card.
- Review firmware and software: follow the BIOS or firmware instructions for your exact board and check current operating-system and driver support.
- Match features to your devices: check port type and count, Thunderbolt generation, data-rate specification, and display routing against the peripherals you will use.
If the compatibility list does not name your board, or the manuals do not clearly establish the required connections, treat compatibility as unconfirmed and ask the motherboard or card manufacturer before buying.
Which Thunderbolt card should you choose?
Choose only among cards documented as compatible with your exact motherboard. ThunderboltEX 4 and GC-MAPLE RIDGE are examples with different documented slot and header requirements; neither is a safe recommendation for a board that is absent from its manufacturer’s supported list. Prioritize the connections and OS support your setup needs, then use the card manual to verify every required cable and display input.
