The best co-op survival game for building a shared base is the one that matches your group’s size, how you want to host the world, and what every player’s device and edition can actually run. Valheim suits a small group that wants survival progression with customizable bases. Enshrouded suits larger groups that want fantasy co-op and a server that stays online. Minecraft suits groups that want a flexible sandbox, private shared worlds, or couch play on a console. Work through the checks below before you buy anything, because “co-op” on a store page does not tell you whether your friends can join you.

Start with the five questions that narrow the list

Most buyer regret in this genre comes from a mismatch on one of five points. Answer them in this order and the shortlist usually shrinks to one or two titles.

  1. How many people will play at the same time? Developers set hard caps, and a group that sits just over a cap will not be able to join.
  2. Does the world need to exist when nobody is online? If the host’s computer must be running, a session depends on one person’s availability. A dedicated server or a hosted private world keeps the base available.
  3. What devices and editions does every player have? Check each person’s platform, version and storefront separately. Do not assume that a game sold on several platforms can be played across them.
  4. Is the base the centre of the game, or a place to rest between tasks? Some games reward intricate construction; others treat the base as shelter for progression.
  5. Do you need enemies to attack your structures? If defending a settlement is the whole appeal, verify this in the developer’s current documentation before you commit.

Comparing the three shortlisted games

The table below uses only the values stated in each developer’s or publisher’s official material as checked in 2026. Where a point is not covered there, the cell says so rather than guessing.

Question Valheim (Iron Gate) Enshrouded (Keen Games) Minecraft (Mojang Studios)
Maximum players 10 per server, per the Valheim FAQ Up to 16, per the Enshrouded FAQ Not stated as a single figure on the multiplayer page reviewed; check the Realms or server documentation for your edition
How the world is hosted Peer-to-peer session (private or public) or a self-hosted dedicated server for persistent play Online co-op with a host, or dedicated servers that keep the world available; the FAQ names GPortal as an in-game rental partner Realms private servers for Bedrock Edition, and Java Edition Realms for Java Edition; couch co-op on Bedrock console
Base-building emphasis Customizable longhouses and bases that expand through building tiers Base building is part of the open survival loop; the developer’s FAQ focuses on world and player systems Open-ended building with the widest range of player-made creations
Do enemies attack bases? Not stated in the Iron Gate material reviewed Per the FAQ as checked in 2026, enemies attack players rather than bases or dwellings; the developer says this may change after Early Access Not stated in the multiplayer page reviewed

Valheim: survival progression and customizable bases

Valheim is built around gathering, crafting, exploration and bases you can shape. Iron Gate’s official material describes resource gathering, outposts, farms, crafting stations, biome progression and boss fights, and it presents building tiers as the way to expand and defend a base. The developer is direct about its scope: its FAQ states, “Valheim is not an MMO, but rather a co-op game meant to be played with a couple of friends.” That makes it a good fit for a small, committed group rather than a large community.

#1 Best Overall
Stellar Factory Ravine: A Crafty and Cooperative Card Game
  • A unique, cooperative party game
  • Includes 193 casino-quality cards
  • Comes with 36 screen printed wood health tokens, and 1 large fire token
  • Easy to learn and jump right into
  • For 3-6 people - AGES 12+

Your hosting choice matters more here than in most games. A peer-to-peer session is quicker to set up, but the world depends on the host being online. For a base that should stay available between sessions, Iron Gate provides a dedicated-server application. Its support guide says a persistent dedicated server requires some scripting knowledge and may require router configuration, and it lists console commands for the Steam version. Treat that as a real administration task. A self-hosted server is not the same as an official hosted world from the developer, so someone in the group needs to own it.

Enshrouded: larger co-op groups and an always-on server

Enshrouded is the stronger choice when your group is bigger than a typical Valheim party. Keen Games’ FAQ says up to 16 players can play together, and dedicated servers can keep a world running when a friend is offline. The FAQ also says the game can be played solo and offline, so you can start alone and move to a group later.

Rank #2
The Lost Expedition: A Game of Survival in the Amazon
  • SURVIVE THE AMAZON: Manage food, ammunition and health as your team plunges into the jungle in search of the lost explorer Percy Fawcett and the road to El Dorado.
  • THREE WAYS TO PLAY: Tackle the expedition solo, work together co-operatively, or split into teams to see who escapes the jungle first.
  • HARD CHOICES EVERY TURN: Choose your path carefully to prepare for the pitfalls ahead in a game of tight resource management and risk.
  • ACCLAIMED DESIGN AND ART: From award-winning designer Peer Sylvester and illustrator Garen Ewing, fully illustrated in Osprey's diary format.
  • AT A GLANCE: 1-5 players | ages 14 and up | 6 character cards, 56 adventure cards, jungle cards, tokens and playing pieces.

Base defense is the key caveat. As of the FAQ checked in 2026, enemies attack players rather than bases or dwellings. The developer says this may change after Early Access. If your group is looking for raids on a settlement, do not buy on the assumption that it is included; check the current FAQ and patch notes first. The same FAQ describes the game as launching into Steam Early Access first, with other platforms planned after completion. Confirm the current release status and which platforms the game supports before you buy, especially if your group is split across systems.

Minecraft: private shared worlds and couch co-op

Minecraft is the most flexible option, but its multiplayer setup depends heavily on edition. Mojang’s multiplayer page describes Realms as private servers for Bedrock Edition and Java Edition Realms as private servers for Java Edition. It also describes couch co-op with Bedrock Edition on console. Because these are separate options, a Bedrock player and a Java player cannot assume they share the same server type.

  • SURVIVAL BOARD GAME EXPANSION: Maximum Apocalypse: Time Traveler is an expansion of the Maximum Apocalypse boardgame that includes a new Survivor and Mechanics based on Time Travel and Time Anomalies.

Minecraft’s base building is open-ended, which suits groups that care more about creative construction than about combat or survival pressure. The multiplayer page does not provide a single player limit, so confirm the limit for the specific Realms or server option you plan to use. The page reviewed in 2026 also displayed Marketplace Pass at $3.99 per month after a 30-day free period, in U.S. dollars and for a compatible Bedrock Edition version with Marketplace, sold separately. Prices of this kind change by region and over time, so check the current price on the official page before budgeting. This is a separate purchase from the multiplayer options and is not needed to play with friends.
